Dear Readers,

I, for one, am thrilled that winter in Florida is about over! Temperatures in the 30’s - 40’s are not my idea of enjoyable unless I am skiing the slopes in Colorado. For me, all the beauty of living in Florida is enjoying our beaches and outdoor sports, activities and events for which I am physically and mentally ill-equipped to do when it is freezing and windy! Let’s be honest, we are spoiled in South Florida and 50° should always be our lowest temperature limit. So, Mother Nature, bring on the HEAT! This issue of Sports & Activities brings a few wonderful changes for our readers, along with the rise in temperatures. First, this February - April issue now features a special section for Spring Break & Summer Camps. Typically we would only have Spring Break Camps listed in our directory in February - April, then run one big summer camp issue in May. However, our readers and advertisers have given us the heads up that May is too late to introduce Summer Camps and by then the early registration discounts have passed. We listened and delivered! Please see the last purple tabbed section of this issue to see the many diverse camp offerings with sizable early registration discounts, and be sure to let them know where you found their ad! Our second change is that this will be my last issue as Publisher of the Weston Sports & Activities Directory. Please welcome Kim Kadel as the new Publisher/Licensee of Weston! Kim currently owns and publishes the Coral Springs/Parkland Sports & Activities Directory, and she has done an outstanding job building and growing that publication while making concrete connections in the community. This dynamic woman has great plans for the Weston Directory as well, as she grows her publishing business to two areas. Please feel free to contact her for any ideas or business involvement you may have for the future Weston issues. As with many changes, opportunities for growth present themselves. The Sports & Activities Directory currently serves 5 areas in Broward County and we are looking to grow to more! Opportunities are here right now to be your own publisher and licensee of a Sports & Activities Directory. We provide the knowledge, the tools and the training. You bring an entrepreneurial spirit, strong work ethic and a smile. Within 6 months, we will have you ready to distribute your first Sports & Activities Directory. We are also hiring 3-4 Representatives for any/all of our existing areas and 1-2 Corporate Account Executives. Requirements: Personable, Professional, Multi-Tasker with reliable transportation, basic computer skills, a willingness to learn and involve yourself with our communities. Contact MargotPuleri@gmail.com for more information on Licensing or Territory Positions. As the New Year unfolds our 16th year of publishing this unique directory, I’d like to take a minute to thank some of our longest and cherished advertisers who, through thick and thin, have been with us for well over a decade consistently! Their loyalty to us is a testament to how we target and reach the active family market with zero waste, yielding the most effective marketing results for their investment. So here are our top ten advertisers that have never missed an issue: Tag Gymnastics, Bons Orthodontics, Educando A America, The Swim Academy, Florida Super Stars, Bright & Smart Robotics & Engineering, Temple Dor Dorim Early Childhood Center, A World of Knowledge, Gravity Gymnastics, and Broadway Kids! Thank you for letting us grow your business, it is an honor to work with you all! Wishing you all the best of health, happiness and success in 2018! My best to you,

Margot

Dear Weston Residents,

10

Happy New Year Weston! I and your City Commissioners Toby Feuer, Thomas Kallman, Margaret Brown and Byron Jaffe look forward to continuing to serve you in 2018. We all live in Weston because we consider it a special place. That means different things to different people, but how the City is maintained is an integral part of its appeal. We have many projects underway and many in the pipeline, which help keep Weston ranked as one of the premier places to live in America. Projects to maintain or enhance our infrastructure include upgrades to parks and City facilities such as the newly installed playground and artificial turf fields at Tequesta Trace Park; two artificial turf soccer fields and the initiation of a design for a new Community Center in Regional Park; the redesign of Indian Trace Park; the installation of a restroom at Peace Mound Park; renovations to our three Fire Stations, our Police Station and Public Works facility, and the construction of a new Fire Station in Bonaventure. These improvements are designed to maintain property values and enhance lifestyle. With the winter weather in south Florida come a host of City events and programs that we encourage you and your family to enjoy. The WestonNights Free Outdoor Concert Series in the Park continues with live music on Saturday, February 3rd and March 10th. Both concerts will be held at the Event Stage in Weston Regional Park from 7-10PM. Every WestonNights event has food trucks for a complete night out. On February 24th, the Dallas Brass ensemble returns to Weston after inspiring audiences and young musicians around the country with classical, Dixieland, swing, Broadway and patriotic music, and on March 11th we host a free outdoor performance by the Symphony of the Americas Orchestra in Weston Town Center. Wintertime in Weston has spectacular weather and we have equally spectacular events to go with it: the ever-popular free monthly Moonlight Movies in the Park series continues through April along with the Weston Foreign Film Series, free professional puppet shows and magic shows, Celebrate the Arts Day, Weston World Fest, the annual Royal Egg Hunt and much more. New this year, on February 10th from 10AM – 2PM at the Weston Community Center we invite everyone to participate in Weston Community CPR Day. This free event will teach you hands-only CPR and offer instruction on AED and Heimlich, all in under one hour. Give an Hour, Offer Life – A cardiac event or drowning can happen anytime. Will you be ready to help? It could be a child, a parent, a friend and YOU who makes the difference between life and death. We encourage all residents to keep engaged and aware of community projects and events by subscribing to Weston’s weekly E-newsletter, Newsday Tuesday or visit our Events Calendar at WestonFL.org/Events. Until next time…

Don Decker, City Director of Parks and Recreation, adds: “We featured the Dallas Brass in concert a number of years ago and it is one event that people are still talking about today. In addition to a fine performance, their engagement with the student musicians at Cypress Bay adds another dimension to this fabulous night.” “I can say, without a doubt, that bringing in the Dallas Brass was the most exciting event of the year at my school! They do such a great job engaging the students and educating them on how music can be a part of their lives forever. rain Balance identifies the issues, sets a resolution plan and gets your child to a place of progress. We create a holistic view of your child through an initial set of tests that identify areas that need attention and strengthening. From the results of that assessment we create a plan focused on getting your child back on track. The initial assessment can be done in an afternoon. Assessments include sensory, motor and cognitive testing of a large volume of functions designed to identify areas of the brain that might have a developmental delay, which can lead to an imbalance or functional disconnection. Upon completion of testing, you will be provided with a detailed report of your child’s results but you are under no obligation to continue with program. These results help us create a fully individualized program addressing your child’s specific challenges. Brain Balance provides a comprehensive, non-medical approach that combines physical and sensory exercises with academic skill training and healthy nutrition. Your child’s journey starts in our center, but continues at home with exercises and a clean-eating nutrition program. Parent conferences occur every 12 sessions, and a one-year post assessment is conducted after completion of the program. Online tools will help guide you through every aspect of the program and provide all the instruction you need for success. Our exercise videos and music are available for download and accessible anywhere, anytime on any device. It’s all provided for your convenience. Program Timeline: 1. In-depth assessment of your child enables us to personalize a program that meets your child’s needs. The assessment covers a large number of issues that we share and discuss with you. 2. Number of sessions is determined by the results of your child’s assessment. Generally, programs are completed in approximately 3 to 6 months time in Center,

By: Monica R. Mularski , Co-Owner/Center Director

with some children needing more time to achieve their goals. 3. Performance reports are provided every 12 weeks and presented at parent conferences. The center also reached out to speak with your child’s classroom teacher. A follow-up performance review takes place approximately one year after completing the program. 4. In-Center sessions consist of one hour, three times a week. Each hour consists of sensory motor training and cognitive/academic skills. 5. The activities at home are key to successful outcomes. We provide a bevy of tools for establishing a healthy environment. From exercise to a Clean-Eating nutrition program, to a positive atmosphere at home, you’ll have tools - like a full program guide (in print and online) with all the direction you need. Our holistic approach will have your child and your entire family feeling great and performing at levels that will surprise you. The components of our program are: - Sensory-Motor training - Cognitive skill training - At-home daily exercises - Clean-Eating nutrition system - Community and on-line support Our program is drug-free. It does not replace medical advice, rather it complements it. As a proud Brain Balance #WarriorMom I can tell you that the program was life changing for, not just my son, but for my entire family. My family and I are excited to bring the program to our local community and can’t wait to see the progress our enrolled families make!

IN A WORLD WHERE YOU CAN BE ANYTHING, BE

KIND. That is the concept behind Indian Trace’s Kindness Carnival. The Carnival kicked off November 1 through the 17th, strategically settled into the weeks of World Kindness Day, November 13, and the Wonder movie release on November 17th.

Indian Trace’s PTA initiated the Kindness movement by creating a Kindness Committee. The purpose of the committee is to cultivate a Kindness culture at the school. Our goal was to emphasize on daily inspirational quotes, happy music in the mornings, Kindness Wonder Bucks filled with kindness prompts, a surprise Glitter Project where children’s classes were treated to a kindness glitter box, filled with glitter and a message from the “365 days of Wonder” book where Mr. Browne writes Auggie. He mentions how glitter is very much like kindness, “once it’s out of the box…it’s hard to put back in!” The list of kindness ideas goes on and on. Indian Trace’s PTA President, Marilyn Mazzi and Kindness Committee Chair Angie Schaan along with the executive board, spent the summer creating this perfect series of events and the theme of their PTA this year, “Raising KIND Humans”. The outpour of volunteers was incredible; they are called the “Kindness Army”. Everyone wants to make a difference and kindness is a good starting point. The Kindness Carnival ended the series of events on

November 17th. It was the biggest fundraiser of the year! The atmosphere radiated happiness and kindness; you had to be there to feel it! With over 10 inflatable obstacle courses, slides, carnival games and more, the children experienced a day like no other. Kindness Wonder Bucks were shared with friends, children were smiling from ear to ear and really embracing how to be kind, take turns and make sure their friends were all included. The event was flawless and served its purpose. Principal Amy Winder and Assistant Principal Daphne Browne were just as happy and excited to see their school come together for a great cause. Confirming it’s positive initiative were the 50 plus parent volunteers, an entire school of happy children roaming the grounds and a seamless execution of an event right in the school’s backyard. Where there is kindness, anything can be achieved! Sprinkling the very thought of kindness into every idea allowed for a constant flow of positivity and success. The school had such amazing support and can truly say that they couldn’t have done it without the wonderful kindness committee filled with supportive moms and dads; the executive board and the amazing school staff that came together for the greater KINDNESS. #TracersChoosesKind The school is located at 400 Indian Trace in Weston. The school’s main number is (754) 323-6300. Ms. Amy Winder is the principal.

An opportunity for a voice to be heard is a gift that can echo exponentially into

the minds and hearts of others, but the true gift of the opportunity is to the person with the voice that needs to be heard. Louder Than a Bomb Florida is a poetry platform for our youth to express their feelings, thoughts, fears, confusion, dreams, frustration and hope to listening ears. It is a month long competition where individuals and school-based teams share their stories with students from all over Florida and in front of panels of judges. The impact of these works of self expression is, without a doubt, louder than a bomb. Louder Than A Bomb (LTAB) was founded in 2001, through the Young Chicago Authors, by Kevin Coval (YCA Artistic Director) and Anna West. LTAB is now the largest youth poetry festival in the world, featuring more than 120 schools representing over 100 zip codes within the Chicago-land area. LTAB was created to give Chicago youth a platform to share their stories. The festival has since become a “bridge” for young people from many different backgrounds to come together and find a common ground through their narratives. Building upon the amazing impact the Omari Hardwick Bluapple Poetry Network has had on area youth since launching the program in 2013, football legend Jason Taylor and his Jason Taylor Foundation took the ball and ran with it in Florida. Beginning in September of 2014, teachers and students from schools as far south as Homestead and as far north as Port St. Lucie, began working, learning, creating and sharing within their classrooms, in after-school clubs and through various teen open mics throughout South Florida, developing safe spaces for individual and collective expression on their respective campuses and in their communities. The culmination of this work manifested in an 11-day festival in April 2015, which was highlighted by a friendly competition taking place in dynamic venues throughout Broward County. A diverse group of students, parents, administrators and community members representing nearly 40 schools participated in LTABFLA, creating authentic

narratives to reimagine the self and one another while developing mutual respect and tolerance for difference. Funding from Nova Southeastern University, UPS, and countless other corporate and individual supporters has assisted the Jason Taylor Foundation in supporting the schools’ efforts by providing year-round, in-class and after-school instruction, which culminates annually in this poetry festival. “The Jason Taylor Foundation is dedicated to utilizing the art of the spoken word to help provide teens from diverse backgrounds a common vehicle for written and performance based selfexpression,” said Seth Levit, Executive Director of the Jason Taylor Foundation. Four years later, Louder Than a Bomb Florida is about to launch it’s 4th Annual statewide poetry competition. Taking place from March 26 - April 21st, the preliminary, quarterfinals, semifinals then finals will be happening throughout Florida. Although high school registration will close February 2nd, there is time to volunteer time or money to this exceptional program, or purchase tickets to witness and experience the Louder Than a Bomb poetry.

“A Mic. A Stage. A Pen. A Page. This is what the art of poetry begins with – the rest is legendary.”

SCHOOLS anatee Bay Elementary has joined Broward County Public Schools in the Districtwide Debate/Speech Initiative. There are a total of sixty-two (62), 4th and 5th graders, who meet twice a week to learn writing, speaking and presentation skills. I thought that after a few weeks of this voluntary team, the kids would stop coming but I was wrong. Why are the kids coming, on their own free time, to learn how to write and speak? I asked them and this is what they had to say. According to Jessica Zhang, she states, “I like debate because it is fun and it helps me get more comfortable when I speak in front of people. I think it is fun writing a speech and listening to other people’s speeches.” Learning how to write can be fun. It can also help a child gain a voice. Why? Shaivi Jhaivi gave this explanation, “ The reason I like debate is because I really like to talk. I also want to be prepared for Middle and High school. But, the main reason I go is because I really want to talk about saving trees. When I tell people to save trees nobody ever listens so I want to go and tell judges about saving them. If I learn how to talk loudly people will actually listen to me. I also want to learn how to argue with a reason. It will give

me confidence. When I grow up I want to be a lawyer so that is another reason. I need to know how to defend and prove a point.” Debate Team is giving them the opportunity to find their passions and act upon them. As stated by Fernanda del Bianco, “Debate helps me let out my feelings. For people who are shy afraid to speak in front of a group it gives us the opportunity to learn how to talk in front of others in a safe place. Every student should do this because you get over your fear and learn to speak from your heart.” The over-riding reason that multiple students have decided to come to debate is best expressed by Paz de Luca, ”I like debate because I really like to express my true feelings. I want people to hear me and I want to convince them that what I’m saying is really true. It’s about learning to change the world by believing in what you have to say.” Finally, as stated by Brynnli Tolbert, “I wanted to try something new. I keep coming because I enjoy it and I’ll keep on coming even when it gets harder because it’s teaching me to try my best.” The school is located at 19200 Manatee Isles Drive in Weston. The school’s main number is (754) 323-6450. Mrs. Heather Hedman-DeVaughn is the principal.

equesta Trace Middle’s Cambridge students traveled to various extracurricular locations across Florida to enhance student learning and explore project-based discovery. Our 6th grade students enriched their unit on animal intelligence after reading “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel in their Language Arts classes and explored the Miami Zoo. Students were given a personalized tram tour with strategic stops to observe animal enrichment and training, as well as to learn about the purpose of zoos. The adventure ended with a hands-on activity involving giraffe feeding. Additionally, our 7th Grade Cambridge students visited Kennedy Space Center for a first quarter field trip. This educational exploration was the culmination of a cross-curricular unit that started with students reading over the

past summer, “Rocket Boys” by Homer Hickam Jr. The students had an amazing experience viewing the rockets, launchpads and exploring hands-on activities/videos. It was a fun-filled day of discovery and learning. Lastly, our 8th grade Cambridge students explored the world of aviation and the vast career opportunities in the field at the Aviation Expo 2017. Students participated in interactive activities, met industry professionals and engaged in career exploration. Through this experience the students were able to leave with a greater understanding of the opportunities through this pathway and also enhance the exposure to college and career readiness. The school is located at 1800 Indian Trace in Weston. The school’s main number is (754) 323-4400. Mr. Paul Micensky is the principal.

winning team is built on hard work, perseverance, and determination to be the best. This year, the Falcon Cove’s Boys’ Soccer team was the perfect mix of all those traits and more. The team worked together to allow only one goal scored against them the entire season which led to an undefeated season. Thanks to teamwork, outstanding Coaching by Coach Hoopes and Coach Vargas, FCMS boy’s soccer were able to bring a Championship back to Falcon Cove. The season was a dominating one for the team, scoring from between two and eight goals in a single game. Coach Hoopes said, “Our boys are incredible soccer players. I’m so proud of how they represented our school, the families, and themselves. They truly are champions in every sense of the word.” The Falcon Cove championship is summed up by a team that played phenomenally; their efforts will go down in Falcon Cove’s athletic history

as one of their best seasons. In addition to having the Boys’ Soccer Team take home gold, the school district added golf to middle school sports this year and the school shined there as well. FCMS principal, Dr. Kaplan, tweeted, “Congrats to our very own Falcon, Brett White - 1st place Broward County Champion in the 1st ever Middle School Golf Invitational!” Not only was Brett White FCMS first golf champion, but 2017 was also FCMS first year participating in golf. Congratulations to Coach Roca, Coach Stupp and all the golfers on a wonderful inaugural season. FCMS 2017 sports season will be remembered throughout the county and there is still more to come. SCHOOLS renovations. Through the use of Broward County SMART bond monies as well as internal school funds, both weight rooms have witnessed major improvements over the past couple of months. In both rooms new flooring, weight equipment, and aesthetic improvements occurred. Also, each room now features both audio and video components for students and staff to enjoy. Cypress Bay Athletic Director, Scott Selvidge, notes, “We are very excited about the new changes and improvements we can make for athletics and the school as a whole. I am very gratified knowing that our student body, faculty, and staff will get to utilize these facilities and maximize their potential.” Per Mr. Selvidge, the renovation process began back in the Spring of 2016 as Cypress Bay listened to bid offers from a variety of contractors. Cypress Bay selected Life Fitness as their vendor for the project; Mr. Selvidge saying, “Mr. Neely wants the best for his students and the community, and our ability to customize the equipment to our school colors and logos really helped to set them apart from the other competitors.”

In early November excavation and installation occurred in both rooms. The culminating vision was for Cypress Bay to offer a college level weight room experience for its many sport teams while also affording the student population access through its PE classes. The larger room in many ways exceeds what a small college could offer its teams in terms of experience and atmosphere. The students and staff have raved about the final product. They look forward to staying healthy at the BAY! The school is located at 18600 Vista Park Boulevard in Weston. The school’s main number is (754) 323-0350. Mr. Scott Neely is the principal.

n Thursday, December 14th history came alive for 35 of the Dual Language second grade students in Mrs. Oesch’s and Mr. Toro’s class. The students created their very own Living Wax Museum! Each student was tasked with researching and selecting an influential immigrant or the child of an immigrant. The students learned about their interests, accomplishments, and the legacy that they are leaving in this world. Some of the iconic people chosen were Alexander Graham Bell, Elon Musk, Nikola Tesla, Carolina Herrera, Freddy Adu, Audrey Hepburn, Albert Einstein, Leoh Ming Pei, Carlos Santana, and Elizabeth Arden, just to name a few. The project spanned over two weeks and was completely driven by student interest. The goal was for the students to transform into their person of study. Each student was responsible for creating a speech in both English and Spanish, which showcased their dual language abilities. The students partnered with their 5th Grade Book Buddies to create the speeches. The speeches were designed to help the students really transform into their chosen person. In addition, the

students had to come up with a creative pose that they would use when they were acting as the “wax figure”. Each student created a visual display board for all to see and designed a costume to wear to represent their person. The creativity was through the roof! On the day of the event, visitors would help the students “come alive” with the press of a button in front of the display board. Our very own students were living out the legacy of many influential immigrants in front of their family and friends. This project was an amazing hands-on experience for the Second Grade Dual Language students. A plethora of skills were developed during the twoweek span to include: public speaking, historical research, and speech writing. Mrs. Oesch and Mr. Toro’s overall goal was definitely met for this project-based learning opportunity. They stated, “We wanted our students to see first hand that ordinary people can do extraordinary things.” The school is located at 1101 Glades Parkway in Weston. The school’s main number is (754) 323-5850. Mr. Keith Peters is the principal.

A PERFECT 36 ON THE ACT!

s we ring in 2018 Huntington Learning Center and Sports & Activities Directory are proud to introduce you to a new Academic Superstar. The Academic Superstar Program gives students recognition for their achievements. There are different types of students with different academic struggles and successes. Here is one fantastic success story. Meet Saahil Saahil is a good student, who was very afraid of the ACT and put a lot of pressure on himself. His starting score was right around the national average of 21and by the time he was finished with his program at Huntington, he had successfully scored a PERFECT 36. Saahil now has opportunities to get into any college he wants to and he is looking forward to making that decision. Here’s what Saahil had to say about Huntington “Both of my sisters attended Huntington for SAT/ACT test prep, so I knew what to expect. Once I started at Huntington, it became a lot more than I expected and Huntington Learning Center really opened up a whole other potential for me and my future. I’m so grateful for the people in the center and the teachers I was able to work with”. Here are a few words from Saahil’s Mom “I’ve had several years’ worth of experience with Huntington Learning Center, and they have certainly had a positive impact on my life. From my daughter, Sarah, attending Huntington Learning Center over five years ago to my son— Saahil—recently enrolled, I can say that Huntington tutoring has brought my children to the forefront of their potential and ability to succeed.” About the Huntington Exam Prep Program that got Saahil the Perfect Score Huntington Learning Center offers a comprehensive individualized program for both ACT and SAT Prep. The process begins with a full length exam as an evaluation to pinpoint each student’s strengths and weaknesses. A program

is then designed for that individual student that will help maximize their score on their official test. The certified teachers will teach the student content and strategies, and throughout the program the student will take additional practice tests to document progress and adjust areas of focus to maximize success.

he students of Country Isles Elementary School in Weston, Florida, continued their annual observance of Veterans Week, November 13-17, by respectfully showing their support of the military, veterans and their families who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces. Students honored our proud military and veterans with a weeklong celebration. It was an amazing time full of exciting and memorable activities for students, teachers, administration, staff and guests invited to participate. Celebrations started each morning with current members of the military signing autographs, raising the school’s flag and answering students’ questions. Students had an opportunity to meet a veteran family during their lunch period. Each afternoon, patriotic music played as veterans once again greeted students as they left campus for the day. As part of the weeklong celebration, students from a military family were encouraged to make a poster of their family members who have served. Posters were hung on the walls of Country Isles. Students ended the week with a special ceremony, which included military students and their families proudly walking around campus. Guests from several branches of the military were present and passed out flags to students. During this time, students were able to honor our guests and shake hands

students at the school, was being able to watch on NBC Nightly News the students in Puerto Rico receiving their backpacks and expressing their appreciation for their supplies. Students at Eagle Point Elementary learn daily what it means to be a leader. The school is a “Leader in Me” school and embeds The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People into every aspect of their curriculum. They also know that as leaders, they are called upon in times of crisis to lead, act and set an example for others. The school is located at 100 Indian Trace in Weston. with local heroes. It was a very emotional and touching moment for all. During this special week, CIE students helped raise money to support local veterans. The student council also participated by selling flags for $1.00 each. This year, CIE students also raised money to help support K9’s for Warriors, an organization that matches a veteran with a service dog. The guest of honor during Veterans Week (and a wonderful attraction) at Country Isles was Dell, a service dog from K9’s for Warriors. His partner, Bryan was able to join CIE too. Through generous donations collected, CIE students raised almost $1500.00 that will be donated to the K9 program. Students helping their community and having a direct impact on a local soldier are lessons that will last forever. Mrs. Morgan, the principal at Country Isles, stated that the celebrations reinforced the lessons that took place in class and the significance of Veterans Day. Students having an opportunity to meet and speak with soldiers in uniform makes a difference. It was a remarkable way to honor and thank them for their proud service. Country Isles Elementary is located at 2300 Country Isles Road, Weston 33326. Call (754) 323-5250 or visit their website at www.countryisles.net for more information.

tudents from Eagle Point Elementary School rallied together to send over 600 backpacks filled with school supplies & personal note to students most impacted by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. Students at Eagle Point Elementary wanted to make sure that students would have the necessary school supplies when restarting their school year. For over a month they collected pencils, paper, notebooks, crayons, markers and just about every item necessary to for a successful school year. With the help of NBC producers and a private donor who offered their plane for transport, the backpacks of love and hope made it to the island and into the hands of students in schools all across Puerto Rico. Students at Eagle Point Elementary are known for their community service projects. Last year, students in the school collectively sponsored more than fifty community service projects.
