Dear Readers, Welcome to the end of the school year and the beginning of a relaxing and fun-filled summer. My name is Kim Kadel, and I am the proud new publisher of the Weston Sports and Activities Directory. It has been the flagship in our publishing group for the past 17 years. I am a married, mother of two boys, and we have been living in North West Broward for more than 15 years. I currently publish the Coral Springs Parkland Sports & Activities Directory. Having the opportunity to continue the tradition of this amazing publication in the beautiful city of Weston is very exciting. I have been integrating myself into the community the past several months and have been attending many of the city’s events while meeting with businesses, schools, city leaders and other important community members. I cannot express enough how excited I am to learn more about your beautiful city. I will continue to keep the directory as family friendly and community based as it has always been. In this issue, be sure to check out the great summer events taking place at the library and the end of the school year concerts. It will all be capped off with the fabulous 4th of July Parade. The events section is filled with so many options of things to do on the weekends. Also, look at the summer camp section to see how to entertain and keep the kids busy during summer break. As always, we want to keep you informed on the some of the great things happening at your local schools. For example, many students have met some great authors, engaged in Dr. Seuss events and will have the opportunity to become part of a new FBI high school program. The students have had a great and innovating year and you can see some highlights in the school section. Weston is definitely a wonderful place to be. I can’t wait to experience all the fantastic things taking place in town. Please know that I am open to questions, comments and interesting stories. I will be at the ball fields for your kids games, recitals, school happenings and around town, so, if you see me taking pictures please do not hesitate to say hello! It is my goal to cover the active families of Weston doing fun things, achieving great accomplishments and enjoying life. If you have pictures or comments, please feel free to send them to me. On a personal note, I would like to thank artist and Parkland mom Nava Lundy for allowing us to use her beautiful paintings to memorialize and celebrate the lives of the students, teacher and coaches that tragically lost their lives at Marjory Stoneman Douglas on February 14, 2018. As a parent of a MSD student it has been truly amazing to see the outpouring of support from our larger Broward community, the country, and the world. We are all MSDStrong!

My best to you,

Kim Kadel

Dear Weston Residents,

10

It is with great pride that I advise residents and business owners that the City of Weston was ranked #8 in the Top 100 Safest Cities in the U.S. by NeighborhoodScout. Weston is one of only three cities in Florida on the list. This recognition honors the accomplishments of our police force and law enforcement efforts and, our residents’ participation in being alert and calling in suspicious activities. Being a safe community to live and raise our children in is one of Weston’s top priorities and I am pleased to say this goal continues to be met. I would like to commend Weston Police Chief Kevin Butler and the men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office for the work they do each day on behalf of our residents, businesses and guests. I encourage you, our residents to stay vigilant: lock car doors and lock your homes; school year is almost over, so watch for more children out playing, bike riding and crossing streets; and always call in suspicious activity. One of the extra security measures available to Weston residents from BSO are daily home safety checks when residents are out of town. With summer vacation season rapidly approaching, I encourage you to take advantage of this program by calling the Weston District Office at 954-389-2010 or printing out the form at http:// www.westonfl.org/media/docs/misc/2017_Home_Watch_Request.pdf. Another tip: don’t advertise you are out of town on social media. Unfortunately, it’s not only your friends who might be watching. Volunteerism and community service engage citizens, improve lives and strengthen communities. In April, we honored our Weston Volunteers during National Volunteer Week. In May, a very special individual in our community, Mrs. Renee Smoley, affectionately known as ‘The Mother of Weston’ will be inducted into the Broward Senior Hall of Fame. Renee is an avid and active volunteer at 93 years young and I want to extend a very special thank you for all she has done for our – and her – City of Weston. Congratulations on this much deserved recognition. Lastly, come join the parade! An annual family favorite, the Weston July 4th Hometown Parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 4th with Grand Marshal Craig Setzer, resident and CBS4 Meteorologist. Be a participant or view from along the parade route – both are free and so much fun! Visit our website for a parade application. See you at the Parade!

Until next time…

Mayor Daniel J. Stermer City of Weston

n a glorious Sunday afternoon, over 2,000 attendees reveled in the energetic atmosphere of the 3rd Annual Weston World Fest. From youngsters in strollers to Granny and Granddad, and all ages in between, they were able to visit 20 different country booths, watch a full day of international entertainment onstage and sample ethnic food, celebrating the diversity of the South Florida’s community. Weston Commissioner Tom Kallman said “Weston is the melting pot of the world. This beautiful event brings all cultures together.” From the opening moments to the end of the day, the country booths (all featuring youth activities), were jammed. Representing Venezuela, which has been with the festival since its beginning, Michelle Steinman noted “It is great to expose our culture to everyone. And the kids like the sports and games”, which included: a ring toss, flip the ball in a cup, and a pillowcase sack race on a path of dominos. Newcomer Russia demonstrated lapta, a 700-year-old game similar to bowling, and displayed their famous nesting dolls and astronaut feats among other items. Anna Maslakova Herring said, “We love to introduce people to the traditions and culture of our country”. The entertainment portion was varied and included: Taiko drummers (a crowd favorite), colorfully-dressed dancers representing different Latin American countries, a guitar duo singing in Portuguese, Russian dancers, a mariachi band, a young artist singing in German, African dance, a new-to-the-event Chinese dragon performance and Chinese fan choreography, and Bollywood dancers who, at the end of the day, had the crowd on its feet dancing with them. There was also a dedication and performance of a song from the American musical “Rent”, early in the day, by students from Cypress Bay to honor the victims and community from Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school. International cuisine from local restaurants brought the tastes of Japan, Spain, India,

Germany, Mexico, and Italy to the Fest. Ricardo Mirensky, Weston resident, said “It was great to see the different cultures in the performances as well as the food, and the high quality food offerings for every taste.” New this year was a Weston Sports Expo, which featured many local sports businesses and organizations, and an inflatable sports challenge that included football, basketball and soccer activities. Gabby Cappanera said “It was great to see the kids experiencing these sports and to having them ask so many questions about it”. With no admission charge to attend, this type of event can only happen with a serious volunteer commitment and substantial sponsorship. Many adults and students joined the Arts Council volunteers in making this happen. Jami Nix Rahn, Arts Council President, said “Weston World Fest has been a true collaboration with the City of Weston and hundreds of volunteers. Plus this year’s event was also supported in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council through their Cultural Incentive Program.” Don Decker, Director of Parks and Recreation, noted: “This is the greatest turnout we have had. It highlights the diversity and the unity of our community. And we all appreciate the volunteer effort it takes to make this wonderful event happen.” Weston World Fest Founder and Chairperson Carol Lema, who had the opportunity to both travel and live abroad with her family for over a decade, summed up the event as follows: “I’m passionate about and fascinated by international travel and culture, and work in conjunction with the Arts Council and the city a large part of the year preparing this international experience for the community. If Weston World Fest inspires one person to travel, learn a language, try new foods or simply appreciate cultural performances, we have done our job.”

Celebrating 10 Years of Achievement

s Broadway Kids Studio celebrates it’s 10 year anniversary, we reflect on the positive impact a performing arts studio can have on a community and the future of the talented young students who currently attend and have attended it’s program. Broadway Kids Studio opened its doors in the summer of 2008, with the hopes of inspiring young performers to follow their dreams in music, dance, and drama. “BKS means the world to me. It’s like belonging to a family. It’s a place that prepared me to seek a career in the arts. The studio gave me the training and confidence to develop into the performer I am today,” said Emily Alderman, a Freshman majoring in Dance at Florida State University. What started as a 3-room studio encompassing 1700 square feet, grew to state-of-the-art 11-room studio spanning over 8,000 square feet.

The facility houses a recording studio, multiple large dance and private lesson studios, a black box theater, and a rock band rehearsal space. The use of a large air wall gives the studio flexibility to combine two large dance studios into an area capable of replicating a large performance stage. The ability to translate directly from class to the stage has helped both large scale musical productions and the BKS dance competition team. A multiple time world dance championship qualifying team, BKS took over 70 dancers to the world stage last year. Throughout the year, BKS students can be seen participating with their local schools in Thespians, Spring Musicals, FMEA All State, and Disney’s Candlelight Procession. The training they receive from BKS is imperative to the success they achieve at school, both in the arts and academically. “I have

always had the artistic seed inside of me. BKS watered me and gave me sunlight to grow into the artistic tree I have become,” said Sergio De La Espriella, a Senior at the University of Florida majoring in Musical Theater. Upon graduation, Sergio is heading to the Charleston Stage Company in South Carolina for a one month actor in residency program. Most recently, BKS performers have been seen dancing at halftime and performing with live Rock Band sets at Miami Heat games, Shops at Pembroke Gardens, the Davie Orange Blossom Festival, and other community events. Carolena Albert, an intern at Grammy University, and Senior studying Popular and Commercial Music at Loyola University said, “I love that I was constantly surrounded by music and had the space available to me to be able to create, collaborate, receive

DIRECTORY | I s s u e 61 | M a y - J ul y 2 018 Weston Sports & Activities Directory

constructive advice, and most of all express myself.” As a training facility to hundreds of performers every week, we are proud to see our students pursue their passion after they graduate high school. Diego De La Espriella, currently a Sophomore at Oklahoma University studying Acting and Dramaturgy said, “BKS reminds me of home. BKS fosters an environment that promotes positive connection and love.” Carter Nash, a University of Miami Musical Theater major, said “My favorite part of BKS had been the performances…to be able to walk on that stage confidently and put up a performance that we were proud of is a feeling I don’t think I will be able to justify with words.” Carter can be seen in the upcoming production of the Pirates of Penzance at The Jerry Herman Ring Theater. Victor Vazquez is currently a student at Marymount University (NYC) studying Theater Performance. Victor started his theater journey 9 years ago when BKS was in its infancy. Victor, who was seen in many BKS productions while in middle school and high school said, “BKS prepared me for studying musical theater in college because it gave me the skills and experience I needed, and the knowledge to apply them so I could continue down this path.”

Alumni are now studying music, theater, and dance all over the United States: Suzie Fyodorov is at Tish School of the Arts at NYU, Victor Vazquez, is at Marymount in NY, Emily Alderman is at Florida State University, Diego de la Espriella is at Oklahoma University, Gabriel Szajnert and Carter Nash, are at the University of Miami, Carolena Albert is at Loyola University, and Valentina Rodriguez is at University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Valentina, who is studying Music Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology said it best, “Once a Broadway Kid always a Broadway Kid. I owe them everything I have. It was and still is a second home to me.” With over 350 currently enrolled students, the future is shining bright for these performers. Broadway Kids Studio provides training in dancing, singing, acting and instruments. Coupled with performance opportunities, this training translates to an unmatched competitive advantage for BKS students. A couple of BKS seniors in the spotlight this year include Caroline Cuevas and Alyssa Hartley. Caroline is in the midst of college music auditions and has attended Broadway Kids Studio for 7 years. Her favorite part of BKS is, “The people, Michelle Ameerally and Raul Rivera especially, they have been my mentors and supporters.”

Alyssa Hartley is starting her BFA in Musical Theater at LIU-Post in the fall. “Theater is something that is supposed to bring people who love to perform together to produce beautiful pieces of art, and I truly believe the BKS embodies that. At BKS, we all come together for the same reason and form lifelong bonds, even if we are only in one show together,” said Alyssa. All programs at BKS sell out every year with lengthy waiting lists the norm for the After School Program. The program is rich in a variety of classes, disciplined instruction, and unmatched attention to details. Enrollment opens at the beginning of May for the 2018/2019 school year. Anyone interested should take advantage of the few spots that are available each year. Summer Camp this year is sure to be popular once again with the studio performing 101 Dalmatians Kids, Jungle Book Kids, Mary Poppins Jr., and School of Rock. In addition, weekly Summer Dance Camps are available. Enrollment is open now and spots are filling up quickly! A sell out for the 10th consecutive year is certain. ho knew taking a few simple safety steps can help save lives around our pools, tubs, water areas and oceans? It truly takes all of us being smarter around water and promoting water safety throughout our communities. The Swim Academy strives in promoting water safety awareness and parent education in all of their learn to swim programs. Their DID YOU lessons not only provide water skills that can help save a child’s life, but encourage lifelong love and respect for water. The Swim academy KNOW: promotes having fun in the water, but their #1 goal is Safety First. According to the The Swim Academy’s Executive Director, Marcella Miciano Florida Department explains, “Our parents always tell us they didn’t know that of Health, Florida drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury deaths for loses more children children 4 and under. We then explain that drowning is the 2nd under the age leading cause of unintentional injury deaths for children 1-14 of five to years. We let them know that together we will help teach their child and their family how to be water safer, smarter and hyper drowning than responsive around water.” Starting a child in swim lessons is any other state. one of the crucial ingredients in keeping children safer in and around our numerous water areas.

• ADULT SUPERVISION: There is NO substitute for adult supervision! It is the primary layer of protection when watching children in the pool or around water. Designate a Water Watcher AT ALL TIMES. If that phone rings inside and you run in to answer it, a child can drown in less than a minute while you say hello. NEVER leave children alone when swimming, not even for a minute. • LAYERS OF PROTECTION: Pool fences, self-closing and self-latching gates, active alarms and enhancing barriers around the pool is critical! Your cute little crawler can get through a gate, door and more (including dog/cat doors). • LEARN HOW TO SWIM: Begin swimming lessons at an early age. Risk of drowning is decreased by as much as 88% when children ages 4 and under take swimming lessons. Adults can also learn to swim making it a “family safer” activity for all. • SAFER RESPONSE: LEARN CPR to save a life! Make sure your family (grandparents, babysitters, caregivers and neighbors) knows about pool safety and has an action plan in case of an emergency! If a child is missing, ALWAYS CHECK THE POOL/SPA/CANAL/ LAKE FIRST. • WEAR A LIFE JACKET: Always have your child wear a life jacket approved by the U.S. Coast Guard while on boats, around open bodies of water or when participating in water sports. Make sure the life jacket fits snugly.

s the second school in the nation to be chosen, the Bay will be offering a specialized Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Cyber-STEM Program, starting in the 2018-2019 school year. The program will prepare students for a job as a special agent. On Jan. 31, FBI Special Agents gave an informational presentation in the auditorium for parents and students interested in applying to the program. “It’s very exciting for us to do something new with an amazing school and an amazing program that has been worked out,” FBI Special Agent Alexis Carpenteri said. “We can actually reach out to high school students before they go to college and hopefully better prepare them for the FBI.” The course will be offered to incoming freshmen, sophomores and juniors who must complete an application form to be entered into a pool of applicants. These students will be handpicked by FBI agents and school administration based upon previous academic history. Assistant Principal, Marianela Estripeaut, said “the program is highly selective in order to ensure that all students will be suitable candidates for future jobs.” “I think it’s just one more thing we have to offer to our students that are interested in the cyber field, which is very popular right now,” Mrs. Estripeaut said. “[Students] are interested and excited; I have heard from several of them that it was a program they have always wanted.” In the program, students will participate in a series of FBI practical exercises, case presentations and sponsored activities. Upon completion of this course, students will receive an FBI Cyber-STEM certification and have the skills that are in high demand in the cyber field. “I think it’s really cool that the knowledge they teach us applies to the real world,” sophomore Jaden Betancurt said. “Seeing actual cases that the FBI has solved will be a new experience that I can’t wait to get the chance to be a part of.” Upon admission to the program, students will have to complete AP Computing Science Principles/Cyber and AICE Informational Technology and Comprehensive Law Honors. These courses will be specially taught to meet the requirements of the FBI. These classes will have to be completed by the time the students’ graduate in order to receive the certification. “It’s a program that has been built from scratch based on what the FBI is looking for in students,” Special Agent Carpenteri said. “We had to work really closely with the staff here

ebruary 14, will be a day that will always be remembered in Broward County and around the world. Through tragedy, the Everglades community grew closer. The students in Mrs. Kanefsky’s third grade gifted class wanted to do something to help the students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas. They decided to make banners and write cards to send to the school. They knew that the cards and banners would help cheer up some of the students when they returned to school, but what about after? What about when they needed a distraction, or an activity to stop their minds from racing?

to conclude which classes would satisfy the learning objectives the FBI wants in the students.” Special Agent Carpenteri believes it is important for kids to learn exactly what they need to succeed in this career path. She knows that this field is highly selective, so it is valuable to begin training at a young age. “The importance of this program is to teach [students] how these courses play out in real life. We’re going to show them what case used that learning principle to solve it and hopefully inspire the students to actively learn,” Special Agent Carpenteri said. FBI Special Agent Brian Waterman said he hopes the FBI Cyber-STEM program will give students a realistic view on what the FBI does. He said they are planning on using the classes to expose students to real life casework that was chosen to supplement the work they do in class. “We hope that at the end of the day, the students at Cypress Bay learn a little bit about what the FBI actually does outside what it is portrayed to be on television,” Special Agent Waterman said. “We want them to learn about the information, cases and the hard work that goes into working in the FBI.” Raquel Betancurt, a Cypress Bay Parent, said she is excited that the school is offering a course that is specifically designed to prepare her son for the job of a cyber agent and will directly influence his future. “My son has always been interested in the FBI since he was a young kid,” Mrs. Betancurt said. “The fact that they are bringing it to the school and that it is in our reach is a great opportunity for him.” Cypress Bay High School is located at 18600 Vista Park Boulevard. Mr. Scott Neely is the school principal. The school’s main phone number is (754) 323-0350.

Enlisting the help of the class, and their parents, the students put together two large baskets filled with board games, card games, puzzles, coloring books, sketchpads, and colored pencils. “The students, and community of Weston, wanted to be able to help in some small way,” stated Mrs. Kanefsky. “We are so fortunate to be able to help others at a time like this.” The students wrote encouraging messages to the MSD students to try to brighten their day during this difficult time. ndian Trace students have been bitten by the Graphic Novel bug! “This year, our new section dedicated to graphic novels has been so popular that it’s hard to keep the books on the shelves!” exclaims Media Specialist, Dione Mila. It’s true that not only do the students love to read these entertaining books; they also enjoy writing and illustrating their own work. To encourage this love of reading, Indian Trace partnered with Books and Books in Coral Gables, FL. This independent bookstore, with numerous locations in Miami, often teams up with schools to bring in celebrated authors and illustrators. “Last year, Books and Books provided Robin Preiss Glasser, the illustrator of the Fancy Nancy books. The students were ecstatic to meet this amazing artist and hear how she creates her images.” In February, celebrated author/illustrator Judd Winick enthralled the students, courtesy of Books and Books. His energetic demonstration and talk inspired students to read not only Winick’s HiLo series, but also Tom Sniegoski’s series, Bone. “My son read the entire Bone series and loved superhero comics. He even had all the paraphernalia to go along with it. I thought, wait! Why don’t I write a superhero comic?” Winick’s lively comical style spoke to the students on their level, enticing them to read more. “What a great connection for kids to see how a writer can also be an artist.” declared second grade teacher, Mrs. Delgado. “Not only is he amazing author and illustrator, his books are inspiring, engaging, and my students can’t put them down.” Mr. Winnick’s presentation touched the hearts

and minds of the teachers as well as the students. “I was inspired as much as my students.” commented third grade teacher, Mrs. DeBiase. “Just like the teacher from his childhood, I let go of the worksheets and offer my students blank paper.” In preparation for the visit, students in the second and third grades drew themselves as a comic superhero. “There are so many great illustrations that it’s hard to choose!” enthused Art Teacher, Annika Dean. The Second grade student, Sophia Perez, who was the winner, introduced Mr. Winick. “I’m excited to have him come to our school, and even more excited because he is the first author I’ve ever met!” declared Sophia. Joshua Contreras, runner up and inspiring author/illustrator, also met Judd Winick and was able to ask him questions. Josh confirmed, “I want to be just like him because I love to draw and write comics.” Third grade teacher, Ms. Koch, concurred, “Seeing Judd Winick was a special treat for both the students and the teachers! He was inspiring, enthusiastic, and entertaining. After listening to him, my students cannot put his books down!” Building the love of reading is strong at Indian Trace. “We are so grateful to Books and Books for this opportunity. And to Judd Winick for his amazing assembly and books.” exclaimed Mrs. Mila. Indian Trace Elementary is located at 400 Indian Trace. Ms. Amy Winder is the school principal. Redefines STEM

efined Stem is an amazing program that allows students to show what they know about our Florida Standards. Instead of taking tests, they have tasks developed around standards that promote application of acquired skills and content material in a meaningful way. This program gives a teacher all the videos, reading materials and tasks in one vetted place. Teachers can customize the tasks to support exactly what is needed to show growth within a given standard. Adding videos or supported reading materials is as easy as clicking a button on the display screen. We are doing Defined STEM: Jungle Geo Adventure Theme Park. This project allows students to show what they know about 4th grade Geometry standards. All activities are aligned to the correct Florida Standards. My students are designing a theme park, like Disney World, but based on geometric shapes and symmetry. Observing students completing a task helps define remediation of instruction. For instance, what I learned through observing my students is that they didn’t have a clear understanding of symmetry. Even though they learned a definition about symmetry in kindergarten they couldn’t apply their knowledge. They didn’t understand the concept of reflections or mirror images. I wouldn’t have learned about this nuance unless I could see them in action using the information. Knowing this allowed me to make changes to my instruction, which enabled them to complete the assigned tasks. The best way I know how to evaluate a program is by listening to my own students.

By: Andrea Perez, Teacher

Here is what the students are saying about Defined STEM: Santiago and Reid: “We love doing this because we aren’t stuck doing boring bookwork. We love designing. So, it is like real life application, where we learn the standards by thinking about a problem and then getting creative in solving the problem. It’s great doing something that isn’t always about the test. Helps build teamwork and relationships!” Brynnli, Paz and Joanna: “We love doing projects. It’s fun not having to be alone doing stuff. My friends help me understand the things that are giving me trouble.” Justin: “I love being creative. It also helps me remember things better because I am doing and not just listening to what I’m supposed to learn. Also, I am allowed to talk which seems more normal than working quietly all day.” Robert: “Helps us learn to cooperate with people that sometimes get on our nerves. Just being by yourself on a computer doesn’t always let me know when I get something wrong or not. Two minds work better than one and I like working with humans!” So, if you want to try a program that has everything in one place, where students find the lessons fun and engaging, give Defined STEM a try. Can’t say enough about how great this is for instruction! Manatee Bay Elementary is located at 19200 Manatee Isles Drive. Ms. Heather HedmanDevaughn is the school principal. The school’s main phone number is (754) 323-6450.

SCHOOLS 5. ANGER AND APATHY – Every child gets frustrated by homework sometimes but take note of excessive exasperation or anxiety. If your child used to enjoy school and now seems uninterested or upset whenever you try to help with homework, it’s time to explore what’s going on behind the scenes. 6. AVOIDANCE – Regular declarations of feeling too sick to go to school. Dismissiveness when school comes up in conversation. Skipped homework (or frequent claims that no homework was assigned). All of these examples are signs that your child is losing interest in school. That avoidance could very well stem from school struggles. Open the lines of communication with your child to try to understand what’s actually happening. Obviously the biggest “red flag” that your child needs help in school is a poor report card, but there are plenty of indicators along the way. If you suspect that your child is having problems in school in between report cards, the first thing you should do is schedule a time to speak to the teacher to learn more about what he or she sees. You should also call Huntington. We can help identify the root of any school problems and design a targeted program of instruction that will help your child close any skill gaps and rebuild his or her confidence. arely do children sail through school from kindergarten through twelfth grade without encountering a few challenges along the way. However, there are typical academic hurdles that teach children about perseverance and asking for help, and then there are big struggles that need intervention. How can you recognize a problem that requires more than just a bit of additional effort on your child’s part? Here are six signs that your child likely needs tutoring help: 1. POOR STUDY SKILLS – Is your child helpless when it comes to getting going on homework each night? Does he or she struggle to prioritize homework and waste time? Study habits are not inherent for most students and must be taught and practiced. Take a close look at things like your child’s notes and in-class worksheets and watch how he or she approaches homework each night. 2. A SHARP DECLINE IN GRADES – Occasional bad grades happen even to the best of students and are nothing to get overly concerned about, but grades that get worse quickly might indicate that your child lacks basic skills and is having a hard time keeping up in the classroom. 3. HOMEWORK TAKING AN EXORBITANT AMOUNT OF TIME – A good rule of thumb is 20 minutes of homework per night in first grade and 10 minutes additional per grade thereafter. If your fourth-grader is spending over an hour on homework each night but the grades don’t reflect the effort, you should investigate. 4. LOTS OF TIME-WASTING – Does your child procrastinate and have difficulty getting started on homework just about every night? These are indicators of a child who is either avoiding work because he or she doesn’t understand something or has a learning issue.

s we all know, Dr. Seuss has been an influential children’s author for many years. His stories have inspired, entertained, and taught many wise lessons about life. He continues to impact the lives of students across the world. At Country Isles Elementary, we honored Dr. Seuss and celebrated Reading Across America by inviting kindergarten and first grade students to the cafeteria for a big Dr. Seuss Celebration. Our Media Specialist, Milly Blanco, organized a production that engaged and entertained our students. The celebration began with Ms. Blanco welcoming the students and getting them excited about the program. Two fifth grade students, acting as Thing 1 and Thing 2, joined her on stage. As they danced, an unexpected guest came out from the curtains to join in the celebration. It was the one and only “The Cat in the Hat” played by Mr. Randy Rollins, art teacher. As you can imagine, the students were thrilled and excited to see all the characters. After the characters danced on stage, the show continued with Ms. Blanco’s read aloud of “Green Eggs and Ham”. The students listened enthusiastically and interacted with the story. They responded with rhyming words throughout the story ensuring

ator Run Elementary has started their first service club. Operation Smile is now meeting twice a month to discuss ways they can help children all over the world. The mission of Operation Smile is to provide free surgeries for mouth deformities (such as cleft palate) to children everywhere. Operation Smile believes that everyone deserves a smile and that these surgeries change a child’s life forever. “I heard about Operation Smile when I was living in Honduras and I admired the work they were doing. I thought it would be a great idea to start a club here at Gator Run,” says Mrs. Shannon Martinez, the school contact person in charge of the club. “I was hoping for 10-15 kids and we ended up with 54!” she continues. Mrs. Martinez had to ask fellow teachers Carrie Velasquez, Rebeca Rivera, Elayne Hollander and Victoria Perez to help her manage such a large group. Gianina Guell, a Gator Run parent, is the Development Director for Operation Smile South America and has been instrumental in helping the club figure out what direction they should take to help patients. So far the club has sent cards to patients in Brazil and created sock puppets for

their understanding of the story. It was truly an exciting activity for our students. Once the students thought the show was over, another surprise was planned for them. This grand surprise included green eggs and ham catered by Exquisite Catering. The students were in awe of what they were going to eat. For many students, it was the first time they had ever seen green eggs and ham. Regardless, they were excited about tasting this special treat. As the story indicated, we had the opportunity to playout the story in real life. Students enjoyed participating in this fun activity. Some students found the green eggs and ham to be delicious, while some others did not. The students had amazing time learning as they used all their five senses in this activity. Students would describe the activity as “fun, smart, awesome and unforgettable.” This Dr. Seuss activity ultimately increased comprehension, language development, and a life-long impact for our students here at Country Isles Elementary. Bringing Dr. Seuss and his characters to life was an exciting activity for all kindergarten and first graders. Thank you, Dr. Seuss! Country Isles Elementary is located at 2300 Country Isles Road. Ms. Mindy Morgan is the school principal. The school’s main phone number is (754) 323-5250.

doctors to use with patients in Colombia. Mrs. Martinez explains, “Many of the patients they see do not speak the same language as the helpers, so the sock puppets are a good way to show patients what is happening and help relax them if they are feeling scared.” The students in the club, range in age from 3-5 grade and were recently treated to a Skype call from the head of student programs, Pete Hansen. They were able to ask him questions about Smile Bags, their next project. These bags provide patients with the basic necessities needed after surgery, along with a coloring book and crayons. The experience has been a positive one for all involved and we hope to keep it going and growing next year. When asked why she started Operation Smile, Mrs. Martinez smiled and said, “There is nothing better for building young people than teaching them about the world and the challenges that face many children their same age. Besides, helping other people feels good.” Gator Run Elementary is located at 1101 Glades Parkway. Mr. Keith Peters is the school principal. The school’s main phone number is (754) 323-5850.
