PREPAREDNESS

I urge all residents and businesses to be #WestonReady for the 2023 Hurricane Season and we are ready to help you do just that. On Tuesday, May 16 in the Weston Community Center from 6:30PM until 8:00PM learn how to prepare and keep your family safe as we enter the 2023 hurricane season. Hear from City experts about hurricane preparedness plans for the City of Weston. Also, view our city website at WestonFL.org/ Hurricane for great information year-round.

JULY 4 WEEKEND 2023

THEME – ‘IGNITE THE SPIRIT OF FREEDOM’

On Monday, July 3, gather with family, friends, and neighbors in Regional Park for a family night of fun, festivities and fireworks starting at 6:00PM leading up to a spectacular fireworks finale at 9:00PM. Festivities include an Interactive Fun Zone with inflatable games, airbrush tattoos, balloon twisters, a craft activity, and interactive photo stations and enjoy live entertainment on the main stage. There will also be a variety of food available for purchase for a perfect holiday evening outdoors.

Next, on Tuesday morning, July 4, kick-start your day with Weston’s Fourth of July Hometown 5K Run/Walk. Starting bright and early at 7:15AM, participate or cheer on the runners in all their patriotic glory. Register today to receive a fantastic finisher medal and race t-shirt!

Then move on to one of Weston’s most beloved annual events - the Hometown Fourth of July Celebration Parade starting at 10:30AM. This year’s theme is Ignite the Spirit of Freedom. Come line the streets anywhere along the parade route to catch YOUR favorite float, band, character, or business. You can be IN the parade, just register your group: download and return a free parade application from our City website WestonFL.org by June 16th.

Finish out your July Fourth holiday safely. While fireworks are legal three days a year in Florida, with July 4 being one of them, we encourage everyone to leave the fireworks to the professionals or watch them on TV. Even those pretty and innocent looking sparklers are not perfectly safe. Sparklers account for 63% of fireworks injuries among children under age 5, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. While they don’t explode, sparklers burn at 1,000-1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hot enough to cause a third-degree burn. The sparks from them can cause burns and eye injuries, but with proper supervision it can be prevented, and they can be enjoyed. Please take note and adjust so your holiday festivities remain safe ones.

Have fun, Be safe, and Be prepared…

Weston Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 76 | MayMid August 2023 13 AROUND TOWN

With so many options in the market, choosing the perfect flooring can be overwhelming. When choosing floors there are many factors that need to be considered, such as: durability, slipperiness, maintenance, moisture and more. Even though at the end of the day, taste and budget will often be the most important drivers, here is a guide to help you make the right choice.

Are you a pet owner?

• If the answer is yes, you will need a floor that is gentle with your furry friend and that is super wear resistance, that’s why we suggest you try these long-lasting options: Laminate Flooring, Ceramic or Porcelain Tiles, Plank Vinyl Flooring, Engineered Hardwood, Cork.

• Carpet would be in second place and can be used only if you go with a pet friendly option.

Do you need flooring installed in a high-humidity area?

• It is a well-known fact that high-moisture can cause significant damage to your flooring, but don’t let that disappoint you. Humidity is our best friend in Florida but that doesn’t mean unaesthetic floors, that’s why choosing the right option is key. Here are some alternatives that could work depending on the site:

• Luxury Vynil Plank or Tile

• Engineered hardwood

• Marble, Ceramic or Porcelain Tile

• Carpet

Are you a low-maintenance or high-maintenance type of person?

• If the answer is low maintenance, you definitely need vinyl in your life and any of

its sorts will be just fine (plank, sheet or tile), it is easy to maintain and it doesn’t require an elaborate care routine.

Ceramic Tile is a great option as well, they are hard and durable, water and stain resistant, they won’t scratch and can be easily cleaned.

Engineered Hardwood, is also a low maintenance option, and the good thing of it is that you have the beauty of hardwood and the stain and scratch resistance treatment of vinyl together with and easy installation process.

Carpet can be considered a bit high-maintenance because of the constant vacuuming and that is kind of true, but nowadays there are some that are stain and soil resistant which means an easier cleanup and an easier life.

• If you prefer looks over maintenance, we suggest Solid Hardwood Flooring, a timeless, classy and stunning option that will never go out of style. It does require some work and special care to keep it looking good, but, all in all, they will last you for years. Do you want to increase the value of your property?

• If you wish to increase the value of your property by changing your floors you should definitely go with the so-called permanent floors Marble, hardwood flooring or ceramic/porcelain tiles.

• Even though these options are perceived as the most expensive options when speaking of floors, there are many different options for different budgets so don’t be afraid to ask. Don’t forget that the investment will be repaid not only with the low maintenance requirements but also with the higher price to which you can sell your home.

Weston Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 76 | MayMid August 2023 18 EVENTS

Did you know Weston collects 4,000 TONS of material from your blue bins every year? Did you know only 75% of material Weston residents put into blue recycling bins actually gets recycled? The rest consists of contaminated items mistakenly placed in there by residents, including plastic bags (even those holding eligible items), pizza boxes, and Styrofoam. Simply raising that to 80% would take an additional 200 tons of material from the landfill each year!

What can you do to help?

• If you need it, order a FREE larger recycling bin. Standard issue recycling carts are 35-gallons. You can trade in your cart for a 64-gallon cart by contacting Republic Services at 954-583-1830.

• No plastic bags at all…they clog up the recycling machinery

• If you bag your recyclables, they are automatically thrown in the landfill. It’s too time consuming and also a safety hazard for the workers at the recycling facility to open those bags

• No food scraps…including those remaining in

containers; clean out anything which contained food

• No pizza boxes with grease and oil residue or liners/ wax paper glued to the box

• Not every piece of metal is recyclable…no pots, pans, metal utensils, or scrap metal

• Stick to aluminum and soup-style cans only

• Plastic “to go” containers and paper “to go” soda or coffee cups with wax or plastic coating and their plastic lids are not accepted

• No window glass, light bulbs, mirrors, glass cookware or bake ware, or ceramics

• To ensure for proper and efficient collection, the carts must be placed correctly – facing the street, at least 3 feet away from obstacles like another cart, mailboxes, fire hydrants, trees, etc.

• This gives the mechanical arms room to pick up your bin

• Otherwise, the driver has to stop, get out of the truck, create space for the mechanical arms, get back in the truck, and empty the bin

• No household garbage or other waste such as gas cylinders, tanks, rocks, dirt, building debris, flammables, small appliances.

• No toys, hoses, wires, holiday lights

I know what you’re thinking. Chris, how am I supposed to remember all this?! Easy… print out the recycling guide at the City’s awesome website and tape it on the inside lid of your blue bin. And, check out other tips as well. www.westonfl.org/recycling But Chris, why can’t I just throw everything in the blue bin and let someone else figure it out? Take a look at this video and you’ll see why https://fb.watch/aJcNL0lGyv/ So, that’s it! Weston is one of the leading recycling city’s in the tri-county area. Just do your small part to help us grow from 75%-80% and keep more garbage out of our increasingly full landfills.

Weston Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 76 | MayMid August 2023 21 EVENTS

Researchers are beginning to learn how to favorably influence genes via the study of epigenetics, a genealtering process called methylation which is involved in 70% of serious psychiatric conditions.

Several studies revealed that most mental disorders involve disturbances or imbalances of essential nutrients that alter brain function.

All heritable mental illnesses were presumed to have an unavoidable genetic component and people believe their biological and psychological fate has already been predetermined and is locked in by gene mutations.

Many mental disorders now appear to be epigenetic, rather than genetic. This means that gene protein making can be switched on (called gene expression) or off (called gene silencing) by environmental factors such as radiation, temperature, food or lack of food. Certain molecules within foods (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential oils) can do this reliably.

Most severe heritable mental disturbances will be reversible once we under-stand how to tap into epigenetics. Moreover, present nutrient therapies have already resulted in thousands of reports of recovery in persons diagnosed with violent behavior, ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia.

More than 70% of people with behavioral and mental disorders have a methylation imbalances, this chemical dominates gene expression. About 42% of schizophrenics are over-methylated while 28% are undermethylated. More than 95% of persons diagnosed with autism, OCD, and antisocial personality disorder (e.g., convicted felons) exhibit undermethylation.

The body’s methyl groups arise from methionine, one of the amino acids present in meat and other proteins. There are nutrient therapies that can normalize methylation and correct many brain chemistry imbalances without resorting to drugs.

Copper overload is a primary offender in many mental disturbances, including autism, paranoid schizophrenia, clinical depression, hyperactivity, learning disability, and postpartum depression. Excessive copper reduces the

brain chemical dopamine and increases norepinephrine. During pregnancy, blood copper levels more than double to stimulate the development of new blood vessels as the baby grows rapidly. If copper levels do not return to normal after birth, then postpartum depression may result and antidepressant drugs usually do not help these women.

Vitamin B6 is another nutrient that is associated with many mental health issues, producing symptoms of irritability, depression, poor short-term memory, insomnia, muscle weakness, difficulty walking and even psychosis. B6 is needed to produce important brain chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine and GABA (a relaxing brain chemical).

Zinc deficiency is the most frequently observed chemical imbalance in mental health populations. Zinc deficiency is associated with temper control problems, weak immunity, depression, poor wound healing, epilepsy, anxiety, learning problems and hormone imbalances. Another common imbalance is a chemical produced in the body called pyrrole that binds to zinc and vitamin B6 and increases their excretion in the urine. Nearly onethird of persons diagnosed with depression, behavioral disorders, autism, and psychosis have elevated pyrroles. A urine test can reveal whether a pyrrole disorder is present. This important chemical imbalance can be corrected within weeks using supplements of zinc, B-6, and augmenting nutrients.

Experience with ADHD and depression patients report significant improvement within month of individualized nutrient therapy and some of them are able to wean away from psychiatric drugs without a return of symptom. Women with post-par-tum depression have reported significant improvement after blood copper levels were normalized.

Cong ratulations Sagemont Prep!

The basketball season was incredible for the Sagemont Prep Men’s Basketball Team.

Sagemont Prep took the title of Class 2A State Champions for 2023 and was the only Broward team to win the state basketball championship. The 2023 State win marks the third for Sagemont Prep’s and Head Coach, David Roe, who has been with the program through all three wins.

With a rematch this year against Orlando Christian Prep, who took the title last year, the Sagemont Prep team came back stronger than ever and ready to be victorious. Coach David Roe could not be prouder of these young men’s determination and grit, “Beyond resilient, they found solutions when things weren’t always going our way and could’ve gone unhinged. I think it shows their character as young men.”

Character is a core component of this team on and off the court, which is why they work so well together. When not winning a state championship, the basketball team is committed to supporting the community. Last November, Sagemont Prep’s basketball team sponsored their 2nd Annual Hoopsgiving Classic, which brought together elite players from across the state to compete, but more importantly, to

raise money for the Honor Flight of South Florida. Sagemont Prep players raised $3,000 that went directly to supporting veterans in taking a trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials that honor them.

Head Coach David Roe, who was named Sun-Sentinel and Miami Herald Coach of the Year, was humbled by this recent recognition but knows he has a great deal to offer and give back. So with this in mind, Coach Roe has partnered with Weston’s YMCA and will be working alongside the YMCA’s young athletes and coaches through a basketball clinic that will be led by none other than the Class 2A’s state championship team.

We are happy to have these remarkable young men in our community and congratulate them on an amazing season.

To round out the accomplishments for this year, Sagemont Prep ended the season ranked the #1 team in class 2A, the #9 team in the state of Florida, and the #54 team in the entire nation!

The Sagemont Preparatory School is located at 2585 Glades Circle, Weston FL 33327

Fooddrives are a wonderful example of how communities come together to support their neighbors in need. Recently, Country Isles Elementary hosted a food drive aimed at collecting food for nearby families, in conjunction with A Day of Service. The event was a huge success. The food drive was organized by the Student Council in collaboration with the Cupboard in Davie. The idea behind the drive was to encourage students to donate nonperishable food items that could be distributed to families in need within the community. The students were excited to be a part of this initiative, and the enthusiasm was evident in the staggering number of food items donated. The school collected over

Manatee Bay Elementary staff have started a new program this year to support parents who have children with a disability. Parenting is a tough job anyway you look at it but add a disability and you add a whole new set of challenges. When parents come together to talk about the challenges, they often come away feeling a bit of relief. Our parent support group provides informal mutual support and opportunities to discuss parenting challenges and strategies. This group intends to foster an increased sense of empowerment, and a feeling of belonging. Parents may come away understanding their child’s emotional and intellectual needs better. They can gain confidence in their parenting capabilities. And this group may offer resources that parents are not aware of. While the group was started with just parents from Manatee Bay Elementary the invitation has now been extended to parents in the Cypress Bay Zone Community. All parents of students with a disability are welcome to join. There are 2 meetings left this school year (April 13th, and May 11th). We meet for 1 hour from 6pm – 7pm. Please email Kristina Posada, Program Coordinator (kristina.podsada@browardschools.com), so that we may plan accordingly for the number of people attending.

Eagle Point Elementary is very excited to kick off fundraising efforts to support a much-needed new playground. Despite an estimated cost of $100,000, the school principal, Ms. Christine de Zayas, is excited to see the school and community work together to bring new equipment to school this year. “ Our school community is thrilled to have the opportunity to fundraise for a new playground that will provide a safe and inviting environment for our students to play,” says de Zayas.

Eagle Point’s PTA (Parent Teacher Association) is a nonprofit organization composed of volunteer parents, community members, and teachers, who all work together to enhance the educational and social experiences of the school population. PTA supports Eagle Point’s teachers, administration, and staff in providing a positive learning environment for students by sponsoring educational programs, recruiting volunteer support, and encouraging parent and community involvement in the learning environment.

Eager to support the playground initiative, with quotes in hand, and a playground design in place, Eagle Point’s PTA team kicked-off fundraising efforts during their February 24th meeting, and their general assembly unanimously voted to donate a sum of $25,000 to the school.

Fundraising is a team effort at Eagle Point Elementary, a Leader in Me Lighthouse school. Following the check presentation, Eagle Point students celebrated “Pajamas for the Playground” Day, where they wore pajamas to school and brought donations to support fundraising efforts on Thursday, March 16th. Student leaders are also planning to sell buttons, crowning fellow classmates “Playground Champions” for their support of the playground replacement initiative. In collaboration, the PTA team is selling “New to the Nest” products in their spirit store, geared towards raising school spirit and welcoming next year’s new Eagle families, with proceeds supporting the playground as well.

Eagle Point’s administration team is working with the PTA to launch both family and community fundraising the first week of April. With various sponsorship levels, and enticing incentives for both families and businesses that support, the Eagle Point community is excited to reach their goal, and break ground on their new playground later this year! Students at Everglades Elementary have completed the annual Reading Across Broward challenge for 202223. This year’s challenge, called for students to reach between 3500 and 7000 minutes of logged reading time from April 1, 2022, through March 31, 2023. This year, a whopping 65% of all Everglades Elementary students in grades Kindergarten through Fifth grade achieved the highest reading award in the challenge. “Reading Across Broward motivates me to read every day because I enjoy seeing my badges add up and I can see my opportunities expand through reading,” says fifth-grader Jacob. Fellow classmates Victoria and Aliyah agree with Jacob, saying that completing the challenge has allowed them to feel “accomplished” and “eager to read new and challenging books”.

Reading Across Broward is a Broward County Public School district-wide challenge that has been open to students in all grades from primary to high school level since the 1980s. The program is voluntary and was started as a way to motivate Broward students to incorporate reading into their daily lives. Since 2017, students across the county have been logging their reading on the Beanstalk application with integrated digital badges. At Everglades Elementary, students are certainly motivated to read, and they can’t wait for the next challenge to start so they can log their reading over the summer and beyond!

Consider how different these pillars are from the passive experience your child has in a class of 30 students. Your child’s special gifts and talents, and even your child’s individual needs, can get lost in a class of 30. But not at Kumon!! That’s why Kumon is cherished in almost 60 countries.
