What started as a project to help boost awareness of every activity sport and program in Weston, turned it into a full-blown publishing business with five area magazines in Broward County. We are run by a group of moms who know how valuable this publication is to our families. We do this because we love it and because we make a difference in our communities. We do this for you…our readers! It’s been quite a rewarding journey with many important team members along the way who helped us grow, mature and hone our variety of professional skills to make the Sports and Activities Directory successful. As we look back on the struggles, the juggles and the chaos of publishing deadlines over the last 20 years, we are very proud of how we stayed the course to maintain our unique identity and become the only single source for recreational sports, activities, schools, and family event information in the cities where we publish. We work honestly and ethically to ensure that the people we do business with, along with our readers, can trust that we do what we say. We attribute our growth to the outstanding relationships we have built in the communities and by simply doing the right thing consistently. We have a genuine commitment to all of our clients’ successes. The goal has always been to create a highquality, useful publication for our readers. Combine that with a well-established, targeted readership, and our long-term advertisers reap a vast return on their advertising dollars with Sports and Activities Directory. Thank you to every team member past and present who took a leap of faith without a salary and trusted that success would come. Margot Puleri, president of our parent company Top Spin Publishing, has been with the Sports & Activities Directory since the 2nd issue published and what a whirlwind affair it has been for her and those that came under her wing! Margot says it was love at first sight when she first got her hands on this publication in 2002 and cannot believe how much she has loved this career. We all feel the same way! Our creative director, Jen Gowens, has been with us over 18 years and is instrumental in our unique look, professional ad design, and is responsible for every perfect page, cover and opener we have done! Our Territory Manager Linda Lombardi has been the driving force of advertising sales and client relationships for over 15 years! Our Publisher Kim Kadel has licensed two areas and now focuses solely on Coral Springs & Parkland. Anina Venuti publishes in Plantation, and I am now the proud owner and publisher for Weston. Team members Carolyn Lass and Erika Denis contribute with territory development and advertising sales as well. We are so proud of all the sacrifices made and hard work this team contributes every issue. It has been our true joy to have been able to get back over $100,000 in sponsorships and donations, as well as over $3 million in pro bono advertising to date for not for profit organizations, city run programs and events, optimist clubs, schools, and youth sports teams. We hope we have been and will continue to be a source of inspiration to start a new sport or hobby, a resource to find fun things to do with the families, a lifesaver because of the important health and safety programs, a successful medium for our advertisers, and a keepsake for your family because your child made the cover or was featured in our magazine for doing some thing extraordinary. Thank you, thank you, thank you for 20 amazing years of Mypublishing!bestto you, Isabel Top

Brown Mayor, City of Weston

Dear Weston Residents, As the summer winds down and we prepare for the 2022-2023 school year, I hope everyone enjoyed a fun and relaxing time with family and friends. I had the opportunity to spend some vacation time with my children and grandchildren, who are grown and live out of state. I think we can all agree, there is something unique and wonderful about summer months that allow us to sit back...enjoy the beautiful weather, regroup, and reconnect. That said, there is also excitement about getting back to school and returning to the classroom. Most especially for your school age children. The anticipation of ‘who’ will be my teacher? Will my friends be in my class? What clubs am I going to join? What activities do I want to do this year? These questions and many more are important for your children, and you. I know we are all excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for your children this next year. I am honored to write an introduction for the Sports and Activities Weston Directory, celebrating their 20th year of publications for our community. I offer congratulations to the team and most especially, Isabel Magette, the Publisher, that does incredible work in identifying programs available in our community. The directory provides invaluable information for our residents in selecting the best choices for your children’s interest this upcoming Additionally, year.I ask that all families/parents sign up for the Newsday Tuesday Newsletter and the eNotifications on our City of Weston website (www.WestonFL. org). All the motivation that a child has to succeed in school, sports, or any endeavor in life, comes from a child’s confidence and self-esteem. A bully robs a child of those very important traits and leaves a negative impact on the rest of their life. The Power we release involves two key biological systems most Americans inadvertently neglect. Together they create homeostasis, a divine biological symphony stimulating stem cell activity, tissue repair, hormonal re-patterning, and reversal of inflammation (the root cause of chronic disease).

Your best life is in front of you. Claim your power. Call (954) 384-7225 or visit www.biohackersfitness.com. We are located at 2750 Glades Cir #500 Weston, FL 33327

By Phil Kaplan with Dr. Kristin Comella, Biohackers, Weston

The key to reigniting your best self lies in learning to access an innate power you’ve had all along. This “power” is the force that allows fractures to repair, tissue to regenerate, and wounds to become memories. It’s the lifeforce miracle that allows an inflamed toe or elbow to “return to normal.” Hippocrates was aware of nature’s human gift. As medicine evolved into a confusing maze of procedures, treatments, and prescriptions, it moved away from its “healing” roots.

“Off my meds!”, “Down 13 pounds in 21 days!”, “I’m better than ever!”. These words echo through homes and communities of our guests and members, ecstatic with the life-altering excitation flowing through their bodies, lighting up every cell with the voltage of human Considerexcellence.this.Your physical struggle is reversible, your disease is fixable, and weight loss resistance is simply a transmutable blockage you can eliminate with a simple Metabolic Reboot...At Biohackers. WHAT IS BIOHACKERS? We’re a 6,000 square foot wonderland where the worlds of medicine and wellness, fitness and regeneration, find a pinnacle of effectiveness. Our programs hasten the reversal of physical degeneration, biological aging, and chronic disease. In simple language, “we make people better.” What people? Moms, entrepreneurs, executives, athletes, salespeople, teachers, and in all likelihood more than 65% of the Weston Community. 65% of American adults have been “labeled” with a chronic disease. Nobody told them it was reversible. Until now. WHAT IS THE “HUMAN BETTERMENT SECRET?”

My name is Phil Kaplan. I’ve been a fitness industry leader for decades with a long-time attachment to Weston (since 1989 when its residents were alligators). In 2019, with mastery of disease reversal through nutrition, mindset, and movement, I met Dr. Kristin Comella, world-renowned expert in Regenerative Medicine. The ground shook. We joined forces. Now, using age-old healing strategies, nutritional innovations, and breakthroughs in science, human regeneration, age-reversal, and Biohacking (you’ll see when you visit), we’ve stepped into a realm where people become better. It’s your turn. We’re on the cusp of national growth with aspirations to go global by 2025. Right now, we’re here, in Weston. Call or email to schedule a complimentary experience, allowing you to understand how to bring about remarkable results and to “feel better” in minutes.

The L1 assists second language learners to build up useful skills to function in a world’s society and academic world. The home language acts as a bridge for students, enabling them to participate more effectively in school activities while they are learning L2. For example, English as a Second Language students (ESL) tend to transfer literacy skills from their native language as well as memory strategies, learning strategies for content knowledge and for language development in English (L2).

In addition to world’s society contribution, learning a second language enhances any student’s school performance and cognitive development including: Problem-Solving Skills, Communicative Skills, Memory Performance (long & short-term), Creative & Critical Thinking, Attitude Toward Foreign Language and Culture, Higher standardized test scores, Higher reading achievement and Essentials of Second Language Acquisition. As research expands in learning how the brain functions in bilingual and multilingual language, current studies unravel common myths.

• Students who develop L1 (Native Language) and L2 (Second Language) acquire language skills equivalent to those acquired by speakers who have been in the L1-only programs.

• It is another myth that children acquire L2 (Second Language) faster and better than adults. Children are not better language learners than adults because at a young age, they are still developing the conceptual abilities necessary for language learning and content knowledge development. Children are developing in parallel manner the cognitive and metalinguistic abilities necessary for L1 and L2 acquisition, such as literacy ability, conceptual learning, and topic knowledge. In contrast, adults can transfer literacy skills as a tool for learning L2, as well as memory strategies, learning strategies for content knowledge and for language development. Studies have also found that the younger one begins to learn L2, the more native like the accent one develops in that language. This factor may be true since pronunciation involves motor patterns that have been fossilized in the L1 and are difficult to alter after a certain period of age.

• Some theories about how people learn to speak a second language are related to the first language acquisition. In other words, the way individuals learned their native language (L1), they learn their second language (L2). For behaviorists, the processes involved in second language learning consisted of imitation, repetition, and reinforcement of grammatical structures. Other theories have been influential in promoting language teaching practices that focus on communication, not grammatical form. These communicative approaches give and take of natural conversations between native and non-native speakers as the crucial element of the second language acquisition process. Being familiar with the second language learning process, brings awareness and understanding of this complex and beneficial process for all citizens of the world. Essentials of second language acquisition provides enhancement and development. Second language learning needs to be promoted as a main component of the curriculum. It gives not only cognitive and academic benefits, but career advantages as well. Bilingual or multilingual speakers have specific benefits over monolinguals speakers in this global connected world. These second language features will definitively make you consider the importance of learning English, Spanish, Mandarin, Italian, Portuguese, Korean, or any other language you consider attractive for this exciting new journey!

I n today’s globalized world, speaking a second language does not only offer advantages, but essential elements for success in life. Citizens of the world need to embrace other cultures to expand knowledge and tolerance. From businesses to consumers, from early child education students to higher education ones, from tourist travelers to luxury passengers, the international community shows integration and connection. Organizations need people who can lead the constantly changing world’s economy. Learning a second language facilitates individuals to develop these needed skills. At the same time, learning another language enhances academic achievement, cognitive development, and positive attitudes towards diversity. Simply said, second language learning is now imperative for growth in this contemporary global society.

As Sagemont proudly concluded 25 years of excellence in May, so concluded a programmatic and co-curricular revitalization with a focus on increasing student engagement. Sagemont kick starts the 2022-23 academic year by infusing every grade level with curriculum enhancements founded on innovation and entrepreneurship. An overarching thematic guide connects learners in the classroom from pre-school to 12th grade through defined objectives and signature projects. Sagemont’s curricular offerings allow students to plan, develop, and create projects that focus on real-world applications. A Sagemont learner is innovative and entrepreneurial, something we encourage and develop by focusing on seven key skill sets. With a focus on collaboration, being a reflective problem finder/solver, engaging in responsible risk taking, taking an analytical approach, all while fostering a curious and creative mindset, it is no wonder we have two campuses filled with extraordinary individuals. Across each grade level, Sagemont students are immersed in real-world application through our well crafted grade level projects. Projects include immersion into Future City, a partnership with Uncharted Learning that allows all students from elementary school to high school to be engaged in launching their own businesses as a required part of their coursework. Leading the way does not end in the classroom, as demonstrated by our high school students, who manage and operate their own cafe on campus. Opportunities to extend learning both in and outside of the classroom are limitless at the SagemontSagemont’sSchool. curriculum is enriched by incorporating an Apple ecosystem from kindergarten through 8th grade. Camp Lingua was established in 2000. It began as English lessons for those who traveled to South Florida for the summer and wanted to learn English themselves at Lingua Language Center, but needed their children to do something while they were in class. We quickly realized how important it was for South Floridians to learn Spanish and for those who came from Spanish speaking households to practice the language and immerse in it. The following year, we decided to add Spanish for kids living in south Florida through fun and exciting camp activities, as well as daily language classes. Now, we have expanded to teach French. Campers participate in a variety of camp activities including languages, which open so many doors for their future. Parents love it, yet having fun and creating lifelong memories is important to our campers. That is why we have successfully created the perfect balance between happy camper and happy parents!

Our campers truly never want to leave, so why not host your child’s birthday with us? Choose between barn, sports or arts theme. We take care of entertainment and cleaning up, you take care of inviting friends and theWhethercake! you are interested in your child learning a new language, being outdoors, connecting with nature and animals, needing help in school, making friends or developing personal growth, we are here!

For the artistic child, Arts Club in the afternoons is a perfect fit. Children explore arts through different media while learning art history and techniques from around theLastly, globe.we offer a Riding Club for horse lovers. This program consists of afternoon riding lessons as well as learning everything that takes place at the barn including grooming, tacking, feeding, training, etc. All our afternoon clubs include transportation from local schools to our campus.

We are located at 4700 SW 160th Avenue, Southwest Ranches 33331. Learn more at www. camplingua.com or call (954) 642-2267, and please mention Sports & Activities Directory!

For the sports kid, we offer Sports Club after-school starting in this fall where children learn all about various sports. Offering clinics, drills, rules, sportsmanship, how to be a team player, discipline, responsibility, nutrition, fitness and more while playing fun sports!

Camp Lingua is located at our beautiful 5-acre ranch in the heart of Southwest Ranches. A picturesque ranch nestled between Weston, Davie and Pembroke Pines. Our campers get to experience the true camp experience of a sleepaway camp, without having to sleep away from home. Not only do campers experience all kinds of sports, arts, barn and animal care, horseback riding, fishing, canoeing, archery, paintball, zip line and more, but they also get to engage and build independence, social, team, and leadership skills from ages 5 to 15. Making friends is an extremely important part of camp, and friendships made at Camp Lingua are sure to last! Friends meet up year after year at camp. We are open year-round, Thanksgiving break, winter and spring. Camps are offered all year even on days when there is no school for teacher planning or holidays. Night camp opens twice a year; Halloween and in April for fun-themed night camp activities. Give us a call to sign up! Aside from camps, we now offer horseback riding lessons each afternoon during the school year and Saturday mornings. Our riders participate in local horse shows and are welcome to attend Saturday camp where riders build a connection with horses and animals. An after-school tutoring program is available for those busy working parents who need their kids to be picked up safely from school and brought to our campus for homework help, to study for upcoming tests and quizzes, work on school projects and/or receive one-on-one tutoring to catch up on any given school-subject.

I look forward to connecting, learning, and growing together this year as we make this a year to remember: ready set, action!

Welcome, and welcome back to a new school year where “Stars areEachBorn.”year the staff votes on a theme. This year I’m super excited about this theme because it reminds me of the privilege we have in partnering with you to help our Manatee Bay Elementary stars to shine. As your Principal, I count it a true honor and a privilege to once again lead this incredible school. I want you to know that year after year we have seen growth and success and we enter another school year being a proud A+ school. One of my beliefs is that being incredible does not just happen. It happens because of what exists at Manatee Bay. We have the BEST and BRIGHTEST willing learners, SKILLED, PASSIONATE, CARING teachers and staff, SUPER SUPPORTIVE parents, and an entire school community working TOGETHER for the same goal. This year we are excited to continue the excellence with our STEM Robotics Programs, High Achieving / Gifted classes, Dual Language, and most importantly the OUTSTANDING teaching, caring, and learning that goes on every day at the Bay!

JUNE Thursday, June 8: Early Release Day, Last Day of School Friday, June 9: Employee Planning (no school for students) H elping Adults with Autism to Perform and Excel (HAAPE) is an allvolunteer, Weston-based, nonprofit foundation, seeking meaningful and sustainable employment opportunities for autistic individuals. In 2016, HAAPE was launched to combat an overlooked societal problem, which is the staggering 80-90% unemployment/ underemployment rate for autistic individuals as reported by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. Although autistic individuals have many abilities that are in high demand by employers, these devastating low rates of employment continue to persist. This overwhelming inequity is exacerbated by the significant lack of muchneeded support following the completion of an autistic individual’s formal education. HAAPE has dedicated its mission to address the adverse effects this cohort of the population encounters. Specifically, HAAPE strives to create, fund, and sustain a multitude of unique programs that provide employment opportunities for autistic individuals. In turn, this will allow these individuals to live more independent, meaningful, and productive lives. To further support HAAPE Inc.’s mission, vision, and key initiatives, Isaac (Ike) Grapin, Kayla Truske, Douglas Sandler, Corey Steinman, and Jack Ross (all freshmen at the time) banded together to form the HAAPE Club at Cypress Bay High School. Despite initial reluctance from school authorities, the group remained undeterred and sought support from state, county, and municipal officials. The club was granted approval in 2016 and embarked on a long and exciting journey to make a difference in society.

The HAAPE Club’s goal was to act as a unique vehicle to educate teachers, peers, and parents across Broward County in support of HAAPE Inc’s overlooked cause. The club established a wide array of programs that placed a significant emphasis on community awareness of this most prevalent, yet underserved issue. The four foci of the club are: Community Outreach, Fundraising, Expansion, and the introduction of Video Portfolio Resumes. Since its inception, the club has experienced remarkable growth in membership, as they have doubled enrollment on a year-over-year basis. To date, the club has roughly 140 dedicated and committed student ambassadors. These inspired students have volunteered at several county-wide outreach events, further enabling the club to make significant contributions towards this cause. Furthermore, the HAAPE Club hosts a variety of events to raise money and encourage membership engagement, while placing emphasis on HAAPE’s purpose. Through the first years of its existence, the club was able to raise nearly $25,000 on behalf of HAAPE Inc. through its relentless pursuit of fundraising. Most notably, the club runs an annual softball classic event that has produced over $10,000 from corporate sponsors and engaged participation from 200-300 individuals.

The high school student leaders who participated in the club learned the values and satisfaction that comes from giving back to their community. This group of once inexperienced leaders have learned the value and satisfaction that can be obtained from giving back to society. While there is much more to be done to combat this societal issue, the club has made a profound and immeasurable impact on graduating autistic students from Cypress Bay High School.
