Dear Readers,

Welcome to a new school year and all the excitement that comes with it. I hope everyone enjoyed a fun filled summer and were able to spend quality time with family and friends. Now it’s time to shift our attention back to education; in this issue you will find great information to help you prepare for the school year ahead. Included is the official Broward County 2019–2020 colored school calendar, all of the Weston schools contact information and hours, and the corresponding FSA scores. We are excited to congratulate all our schools in Weston, every elementary, middle and high school received an A grade! This could not have been possible without our dedicated educators, support staff, parents and of course our amazing children. The City of Weston has so many diverse activities to offer residents throughout the year. Even before the kids head back to school on August 9th, come out to the Family Bike Ride and Expo at the Weston Regional Park. Beginning in October the “Moonlight Movies in the Park” is back, check out the event listing page for information. The Weston Library has a number of free workshops available, including the Ready for College: Applying for College Workshop. Looking for a night out without the kids? Premiere Martial Arts is hosting a Parent’s Night Out on various Friday nights in the fall. Then go enjoy the Friday Night Artisan Market, located behind the Bell Tower at Weston Town Center. In this jam-packed issue, you will find an array of helpful advice on what to do with your kids for after school programs. Check out our extensive section on after school programs. We have partners who do everything from driving your children to activities, to every educational, musical, sports or whatever your child may be into. It won’t be difficult to find a good balance between studying, sports and extracurricular activities, which will help teach time management and leadership skills. Plus, it will help your child develop a solid work ethic. For parents that are looking to volunteer there are many opportunities. We encourage all parents to join their PTA or PTO, this helps keep you involved with what’s going on in your child’s school and have your voice heard. Finally, special congratulations to the entire team at the Sports & Activities Directory for winning the 2019 Small Business Leader of the Year award. We want to thank our city leaders, readers, sponsors and the entire team for which it could not be possible. We are so proud to be going into our 17th year of publishing this valuable, community based, premier one-stop source for unparalleled information on local events, community programs, sports and activities. As always, please feel free to send me any stories, suggestions or pictures that highlight our unique community to cspdirectory1@gmail.com I wish you and your children a successful and prosperous school year ahead! My best to you,

Kim Kadel

Dear Weston Residents,

10

I hope that everyone had an enjoyable summer and is ready for all the fun, excitement and challenges that back to school brings. One of those challenges is the safety of thousands of students getting to and from school each day. Hand Held Phone – Motorists need to heed the NEW traffic law that prohibits the use of a wireless communications device in a handheld manner in a designated school crossing, school zone or work zone area if construction personnel are present. (F.S. 316.003(101). City Budget – Ensuring the quality that is expected by our residents, each September, the City Commission will consider and vote on the proposed budgets for the City of Weston, the Indian Trace Development District and the Bonaventure Development District for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins on October 1st. Budget hearings are open to the public and your input is encouraged. The proposed budget keeps the ad valorem millage rate (tax rate) steady for the second year at 3.3464 and proposes no decrease in General Fund service levels. Hearings will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 and Monday, September 23, 2019 at 7:00 pm at Weston City Hall. A Grades – It is my distinct honor to congratulate every single public and charter school in Weston, as well as Western High School for each achieving an ‘A’ grade issued by the Florida Department of Education for the 2018–2019 school year. This is an exceptional achievement that deserves formal recognition for which the City Commission will recognize each school and principal at an upcoming City Commission meeting. Quality schools are an enormous draw for families and businesses looking to locate within a community and it should be honored. This is a significant factor in Weston’s appeal. I have said this before: quality education, within a safe community, surrounded by environmental beauty, superior recreation facilities, fiscally sound government and access to quality healthcare – everything families and businesses are looking for. Performing Arts & Events – Adding to the quality of life in Weston is the Performing Arts season which starts in October and runs through April. Residents will soon receive the Weston @Play Parks & Recreation Guide, which details tons of upcoming events such as the free Weston Nights Concert in the Park Series, the Foreign Film Series, Moonlight Movies in the Park, the Symphony Concert Series, the Winter Safety Expo and Community Center class information. Be Prepared – As always, be mindful that until November we are in hurricane season. September is actually the peak of Hurricane season and the adage “the first 72 are up to you” means that you have to have the food and supplies to maintain yourself for 3 days without assistance. I encourage you to continue to be vigilant and prepared for a weather emergency and be registered for CodeRED Emergency Notifications. Register under E-Notifications at WestonFL.org. For those on Twitter, you can follow us @CityofWeston, as well as on our urgent message only account: @WestonFLAlert. Lastly, take a few minutes to thank our long-time City Manager John Flint for all his efforts over the past 22 year that has culminated in the Weston we enjoy today. John will retire at noon on October 8, 2019, leaving behind a great legacy that we call home. Be safe and until next time… Daniel J. Stermer Mayor, City of Weston

f you have noticed that your child finds joy and pleasure in art and has a passion to spend time creating beautiful things, you should definitely choose an after school activity that will let your child improve his or her creative skills and find friends to share these interests with. Our Sewing and Fashion Design Program offers unique and versatile after school classes for children who love beauty, fashion, and art. Our innovative Sewing and Fashion Design Curriculum gives children an opportunity to become part of a huge, fantastic world where imagination does not just stay within the realm of a person’s mind but becomes material, has shapes, colors and serves to bring style, brightness, inspiration, and joy to people’s lives. The purpose of our curriculum is not simply to provide children with sewing classes but also to help them learn everything they can about fashion, acquire all the necessary designing skills, and improve their creative and critical thinking – skills that are extremely important today for achievement and success not only in the world of fashion or any other

industry, but also in their personal lives. We want our children to become members of a bigger community; we want them to find beauty in minute details; we focus on helping them set higher goals and not be afraid of achieving them. Petite Designers Sewing and Fashion Design Institute is happy to offer you this great after school program and the opportunity to help you open your children’s minds so they can see that they are talented, bright, and that there is a whole new world of things to do in this life. Our Sewing and Fashion Design Institute welcomes every petite designer. We are proud to say that all our children are extremely enthusiastic about our program and always look forward to having more design and sewing classes and applying their knowledge and skills to creating something new. For those interested to join our program, we offer a complimentary introductory class in our locations in Weston and Boca Raton. ince 1996, Great Bear Automotive has served to every patron that has entrusted them with their car, truck or SUV, with honest, quality work. Their goal has always been to provide reliable, professional, friendly and honest car care with a unique service experience in all areas of repair; from diagnostics to routine maintenance. They pride themselves on offering a reasonable cost and delivery to their customers, with highly a motivated staff you won’t soon forget. Since their inception, Great Bear Automotive has provided general engine repair, diagnostic, tune-ups, suspension, air conditioning, oil changes, batteries, electrical systems, brakes, power steering, shock & struts window tinting, auto detailing and tire installation and alignment services. Conveniently located in Weston, their certified Master Technicians work on most makes and models. They offer a courtesy shuttle service and a guarantee on most of their services performed for 24,000 Miles or 24 Month whatever occurs first., as well as roadside assistance in any part of the country. Their goal is to identify and understand the needs and concerns of their customers and they excel in providing excellent service from start to finish to every patron. But don’t take it from the staff; hear what their clients have to say about recent experiences. “I recently had an oil change and tire rotation done at Great Bear and I couldn’t be

happier with their service. I also asked the manager Len, to look into a noise my brakes were making, and they checked that out for me without any additional charge. Dealing with auto repair shops is always a gamble, but my experience at Great Bear was extremely good and would absolutely return to them in the future.” – Craig M., New Jersey “Barry, Lenny & Jack made my car repair experience a pleasure! I brought my car in for its 45,000 mile checkup; I was about to go to the dealer, but Great Bear quoted me approximately $500 less so I took a chance (my sister and her husband come here all the time, so they came highly recommended). They only changed the wear items that needed changing, which is what saved me the additional cost. I’m a happy camper! Love this place.” – Pam F., Fort Lauderdale “Never hesitate to bring your vehicle here and let me tell you why: Honesty. Next to used car salesmen, auto repair shops are notorious for telling you that you need things that you don’t need. When you find a mechanic or a shop that won’t cheat you, you’ll go there forever. I’ve been a customer of Great Bear for more than a decade.” – Ernie D., Fort Lauderdale Great Bear Automotive is located at 1430 N. Park Drive in Weston. ince its inception in 2017, Premier Martial Arts Weston took over Imperial Martial Arts and inherited many of their students. The more Premier made the dojo their own, the more people came in, eager to learn Premier’s unique style. The leader of Premier Martial Arts Weston, Kurt Asesor (Sixth Degree Black Belt), has made it a priority to make his dojo a safe place for both children and adults to learn effective self-defense techniques while having fun. Today, PMA offers a wide variety of classes, including Krav Maga, KrushBox fitness kickboxing, Sport Karate, Muay Thai kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Students are also given the opportunity to master weapons like bo staff, nunchaku and sword. Their instructors also make it a habit to educate the community about the

dangers they may face and ways to protect themselves no matter their age. Instructors travel to different schools to teach the children how to set goals, hold events at their school to teach kids about stranger danger and ways to defend themselves, and offer workshops for women in the community who want to learn self-defense. Over the past three years, each of the instructors have put forth all their efforts into making this dojo a place where people of all ages can come together, work out and train hard. PMA Weston has achieved so much success with their programs that Kurt Asesor is opening a brand-new school in Plantation. Now, PMA is opening a location in a neighboring city to train a new group in martial arts and fitness. PMA Weston is located at 1375 Shotgun Road. even hours of standing, a choreographed dance number, and a bounce house are just some of the many activities that Dance Marathon participants had access to throughout the event. On March 21st, Student Government Association (SGA) held their annual Dance Marathon fundraiser in the Bay’s cafeteria. In total, attendees raised $19,456 for the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital by the final hour of the event. Senior and Dance Marathon chair, Daniela Colon said the goal of the fundraiser was to raise awareness for kids who have disabilities and cannot stand for themselves. To support these children, she said her job required encouraging participants to keep on their feet for the entirety of the event. “Being the chair of Dance Marathon is such a big responsibility. Not only did I ensure everyone kept standing for the whole seven hours, I had to plan out each activity that happened to the minute,” Colon said. “I believe that this year’s fundraiser was a success. Everyone in SGA had shifts, and they worked hard and did their part, and it seemed like everyone had fun.” Dance Marathon took place following an early release school day before Spring Break. For junior, Andrea Monterrubio, this day was perfect for the fundraiser to take place since nobody would have to miss class or be at school much later than anticipated. Monterrubio also said this was her first Dance Marathon and she plans on coming back next year. “I really did not know what I was signing up for when one of my friends in SGA encouraged me to be her guest for Dance Marathon; all I knew was that I would be standing for seven hours with no breaks,” Monterrubio said. “I thought that standing for that much time would seem eternal, but the organizers really had it set up so well that time never seemed to be going by slowly.” Dancing to Infinity and Beyond was the theme for this year’s event, and decorations and activities that were based off of the movie Toy Story. The cafeteria was adorned with blocks, toy soldiers, a Woody themed jail and more. Junior and chair of decorations Alexa Stafman was in charge of decorating and she said she enjoyed setting up for this year’s theme. “While making the decorations with my committee, I felt really nostalgic about my childhood since ‘Toy Story’ was one of my favorite movies growing up. So many of the props around the cafeteria were inspired by Andy’s room from the movies,” Stafman said. “I thought that the cafeteria looked amazing and everyone who helped out with the set up really did a great job. I hope that next year it looks just as good.” Every hour, the Morale team, which consisted of students in SGA, came out and taught sections of a dance that in the final hour would be put together as one large dance number. Colon said the Morale group did an amazing job at keeping attendees entertained up until the final moments of the fundraiser. “Morale seemed to be a huge hit since their dance was made up of popular songs from artists

ranging from Ariana Grande to even Queen. Their spirit and high energy kept the participants going and entertained at the same time,” Colon said. “I think that by the last ten minutes of Dance Marathon the dance kept on being repeated due to high demand from those participating. Overall, it was so amazing to watch the interaction and choreography Morale had with the on-goers.” Since the event lasted seven hours, pizza, snacks and dessert were offered for those participating and working Dance Marathon. Monterrubio said she wished there had been more food to choose from, other than just cheese and pepperoni pizza and chips. However, she also said the dessert options had a lot of variety and she said that was a positive aspect of the food. “I was not quite sure how food worked, but I do know that all of it was donated which was really nice of the vendors. I do believe if there was more variety to suit those with allergies or if they are vegan, more people would have indulged,” Monterrubio said. “I believe that one way to improve the food situation was maybe to open up donations to participants; maybe somebody’s parent owns a restaurant and would have catered for free, but nobody would have known since only the SGA members were allowed to get the sponsors.” Next year’s event chair is sophomore Lindsay Zifrony and SGA adviser Danielle Nascimento said she has high hopes for her leadership abilities. Nascimento said she will organize the event with the same subdivisions of committees to make the planning, set up and clean up a lot smoother. “This year we had almost all of my SGA students sign up for a shift, be it before the event, during and after, all of which played important roles in the fluidity of Dance Marathon,” Nascimento said. “With most of the major events that SGA runs we have the committees that basically break up parts of the event and puts them together for the final part, I know that Zifrony will stay on top of like [Colon] did because it only makes it easier for everyone.” Nascimento said this year’s Dance Marathon was one of the best and she hopes that the future chairs take after Colon’s leadership and dedication. Nascimento also said she has never been prouder of her students that helped run and manage the fundraiser. “I believe that [Dance Marathon] was a big hit, and I hope that next year’s has even more people and sponsors,” Nascimento said. “This was all thanks to [Colon] and SGA, my job only had me getting a final money count and to supervise the minute to minute schedule, but this really could not have been accomplished without [Colon]. Honestly, I do not think that changing anything could have made this year’s Dance Marathon any better than it was.” Cypress Bay High is located at 18600 Vista Boulevard. The main school number is (754) 323-0350. Mr. Scott Neely and Ms. Kassandra Fried are the school’s principals.

SCHOOLS Country Isles’ Debate Team participates in Broward County’s Debate Program. In the elementary debate, students have the opportunity to choose between four events: impromptu, original oratory, single or duo interpretation, and congressional debate. There are four elementary debate competitions throughout the school year where students across the county compete against each other. This school year, debate will be growing as an after school program where students in grades 3–5 will have an opportunity to participate. Debate is a wonderful forum where children can refine their writing and public speaking skills while building character. Country Isles Elementary offers students the opportunity to participate in two Music Clubs, the Strings Club and the Recorder Club. The Strings Club is open to all interested third through fifth grade students that have some prior experience with playing bowed strings (violin, viola, cello, or bass). The Recorder Club is open to all interested 4th and 5th grade students with the required skills for playing the recorder at this level. The students perform at various school functions including our Winterfest performance, and participate in the Broward Schools All County Honor Orchestra. It’s great to be a Heron when you’re having so much fun! Country Isles Elementary is located at 2300 Country Isles Road. The main school number is (754) 323-5250. Ms. Mindy Morgan is the school’s principal.

ountry Isles Elementary offers many clubs and extracurricular activities. During the 2019–2020 school year, select students will have opportunities to participate in SECME, Heron Hobbies, Debate, or Music Club. The Country Isles Science Team is registered as part of the national SECME organization, which focuses on engaging and preparing students for college and careers in STEM-based fields. Each year, a small team of 4th and 5th grade students collaborate to design and build mousetrap cars, water rockets, and compose an essay to compete in the Broward County SECME competition held each spring. Students focus on the engineering design process, which teaches them to ask, imagine, plan, create, test, improve, and then begin the process all over again until they have a finished product. Our Heron Hobbies program offers school enrichment activities to our students. Clubs have been created for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. We provide culturally enriching programs that promote physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development. Children have fun participating and learning through clubs such as soccer, arts and crafts, foreign language, chess, book publishing, yoga, Lego, and cooking club. The opportunities are endless! A variety of clubs are offered twice a year (fall/spring) after school and new varieties are always available.

assandra Fried was appointed the new Principal for Cypress Bay High School effective July 1, 2019. She is humbled to have worked along side one of the greatest educators and leaders in Broward County, Charles Scott Neely for the past 20 years who has been the school’s only principal. Mr. Neely opened the school in 2002 and will continue to work with Mrs. Fried as she transitions into this very important role. His vision to make Cypress Bay the leading school in the state has created an outstanding environment for our students, parents, faculty and community. Mrs. Fried is steadfastly committed to upholding these values. Kassandra Fried started her career at Cypress Bay as a French teacher and quickly moved into a leadership position before becoming an Assistant Principal at Falcon Cove MS. During that time, she oversaw all professional development, was the PTSA liaison, mentored new educators and aspiring leaders, and was the master scheduler. At the conclusion of her third year, she had the opportunity to return to Cypress Bay, where she began her career. Upon her return to Cypress Bay seven years ago, she has had numerous leadership roles and became the Intern Principal in 2016. Her proficiency in four languages (French, Spanish, Haitian Creole, and English), building community relationships, academic instructional leadership, and strong rapport with students and parents make her the ideal candidate to lead The Bay. During her time at Cypress Bay, she is most proud of her work with programs such as PASL (Personalization for Academic and Social and Emotional Learning) which focuses not only on making sure students are academically proficient but ensuring that their emotional needs are met, while at the same time focusing on their well being to make them college, career and life ready. or the past two years, students at Manatee Bay Elementary have had the privilege of learning a new higher-level vocabulary word each week. Mrs. Stokes, a 4th grade teacher at the time, now a 2nd grade teacher, introduced Word of the Week to the school. She realized that students could benefit from being exposed to “Tier 3” words to expand their vocabulary and spruce up their writing. Every Monday morning, Mrs. Stokes appears on the Morning Announcements to introduce the Word of the Week. She shows up with the word printed in bold colors, uses it in a poem, gives a brief example or embeds it in a funny riddle. Through her excitement, students light up and become consumed with the word. Mrs. Stokes writes announcements for the announcers to read throughout the week and afternoon announcements for Administration to share as a reminder of the week’s word. Through the announcements, Mrs. Stokes challenges students to use the word in their everyday lives in school and at home. Specials Teachers have also gotten on board by posting the word and definition around their rooms. Outside of the Media Center, every word is posted up for all to see and for an entire week, that new Word of the Week is buzzing all over the campus. In the 3rd quarter of the first year (2018), Mrs. Malpica, a Dual Language teacher, joined Mrs. Stokes to offer the Spanish interpretation of the Word of the Week. Mrs. Malpica stands alongside of Mrs. Stokes and

offers that word in Spanish along with a short story or description to help explain that word in Español. In addition, Mrs. Malpica points out the Latin origins of the word and if the word is a cognate, which means that it has the same linguistic origins and is spelled similarly. Like Mrs. Stokes, Ms. Malpica writes announcements in Spanish for the announcers to announce all week long. This has been a great opportunity for our bilingual and ESOL (English as a Second Language) students to read and hear the word in their native language. This year, Science Vocabulary words were added to help support the 5th graders as they prepare for the Science FCAT. It is our hope that if we continue to expose our entire student body to higher level vocabulary, we’ll see them continue to excel in every subject area. Visit our school today to add a new word to your vocabulary. Manatee Bay Elementary is located at 19200 Manatee Isles Drive. The main school number is (754) 323-6450. Ms. Heather Headman-DeVaughn is the school’s principal.

FUN FILLED FIELD DAY

S

AT INDIAN TRACE ELEMENTARY

tudents were eager to celebrate Spring at Indian Trace Elementary. Why? Because Spring means Field Day! With the renovations of the Indian Trace Park, students anxiously awaited news of its completion. Field Day for Indian Trace Elementary did not look good. The City of Weston came to the rescue! They provided a new venue, Tequesta Trace Park. This park has all the space needed to host Coach Mark’s fabulous Field Days. Coach Mark Logsdon is known throughout Broward County as having one of the most dynamic Summer Camp programs around. He brings this passion to his position as Coach at Indian Trace Elementary. Students cheered, then sighed as they realized that it may still be impossible, as now the dilemma of transportation hindered the much-loved activity. But the City of Weston came to the rescue again. Bus transportation was provided for each of the days, so that students could get to and from Tequesta Trace Park. The Indian Trace Field Days were saved! Parent volunteers helped Coach Mark Logsdon transport the equipment from Indian Trace to Tequesta Trace Park. “I’m grateful to Heather and Scott Murphy who really stepped up to bring all the equipment that we use for our Field Day.” Coach Mark explained. In addition, every grade level had a plethora of parent volunteers each day that helped set up, score, and break down the event. Tracy Johnson, a parent of two Tracers, volunteered to keep

score on all four days, and has been the official score keeper for the past four years. “We really could not have this level of experience without our parents.” In order to help Coach Mark keep his equipment safe, Don Decker, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Weston, allowed the use of a storage room. “Don really came through for Indian Trace.” Coach Logsdon offered. “Tequesta Park was a perfect location. We’ve never had a running track, and the kids really enjoyed using it.” All students received a participation ribbon at the event. Grades three, four, and five, added a competitive element with a Team Trophy and individual event ribbons for first, second and third place finishers. The most coveted award is the Sportsmanship Trophy given to the classes who displayed excellent sportsmanship throughout the event. “It felt like we were going on a field trip.” enthused Mrs. DeBiase, a third grade Dual-Language teacher. “I think that really added a little extra spice to our Field Day.” One thing is for sure, it really does take a village to raise a child. With the help of the City of Weston, parents, teachers, staff, and especially Coach Mark Logsdon, the students of Indian Trace soared to new heights at this year’s Field Day. Indian trace Elementary is located at 400 Indian Trace. The main school number is (754) 323-6300. Ms. Amy Winder is the school’s principal.

SCHOOLS | I s s u e 6 6 | August - Oct o be r 2 019

Integration – Integration homework requires students to apply different skills to a single task (e.g. book reports or larger projects). A few tips for children doing integration homework: • Be organized and keep track of all research and information. • Plan thoroughly and effectively, with milestones for multi-step projects. Here are a few best practices to make homework time more productive and successful, no matter what type of homework: • Establish the spot. Consistency is important and helps children get into good homework routines. Designate a place in your home for homework, whether that’s the kitchen, dining room or your child’s desk in her room. • Designate a time. Some children focus best right after school, while others are most alert after dinner and activities. Figure out the best time of day for homework and do your best to set and keep a schedule. • Commit to organization. A homework center with the supplies your child needs to be productive helps children get to work when it’s time to do homework. Your child should spend a few minutes at the end of each homework session tidying it up for the next day. • Spend time creating a game plan. Your child should go through his planner before starting homework to look over all assignments for the evening and rank them in order of priority. This will keep homework time on track and eliminate procrastination. • Limit homework help. Resist the urge to take a lead role in your child’s homework or step in to show your child how to do homework. Your child should take the initiative and assume responsibility. Make sure your role is as a supporter. Is your child stressed and struggling with homework on a daily basis? Huntington can help. ou’ve heard before that there’s no such thing as “onesize-fits-all” learning. The same is true for study and homework strategies. The responsibility factor is a big part of homework and one of its primary benefits. Homework nurtures students’ time management skills and their ability to complete tasks. But the primary purpose of homework is to reinforce what teachers teach in the classroom. The U.S. Department of Education describes four common types of homework: practice, preparatory, extension and integration. At Huntington, we help children of all ages become better students. Here are some of the strategies we teach for tackling different homework types: Practice – Practice homework is the most common type you’ll see come home. It is intended to bolster classroom learning and help students master specific skills. So, just as the name implies, the key to success with this type of homework is to keep practicing. A few tips for children: • Nail down the basic skills that are the underpinning for more complex skills. • Learn from mistakes by going over missed class problems or test questions. • Always consider homework to be required, not optional. • Dig into the steps. In math, for example, children must understand the “why” behind steps and not just the rote “how.” Preparatory – Like it sounds, preparatory homework introduces concepts and ideas that will be covered in class in the near future. Common preparatory homework examples include learning vocabulary or reading a textbook chapter before the content is to be discussed the next day. A few tips for children doing preparatory homework: • Take notes of the main ideas of passages and bring them out when the topic is covered in class. • Write down questions that arise while completing homework. Ask those questions in class the next day. • If stumped on a problem (math or science, for example), circle it and write down a few reasons why the problem is confusing. Extension – Extension homework is often assigned when teachers want to challenge a student with opportunities to apply what they have learned to something new. A few tips for children doing extension homework: • Be resourceful, looking through notes or the textbook for strategies on how to solve a problem or additional information that might be helpful for homework completion. • Think about concepts in different ways and from different angles. This helps children engage in different ways of mental processing. • Take a problem-solving approach to new and unfamiliar material. Children should think about what tools and information they already have that might help them tackle a problem.

n May 15, 2019, the Arts Council of Greater Weston hosted a reception at the Weston Branch Library for the student artists whose work was selected for the Student Artist Showcase exhibit. Director Gryssele Machicote stated, “The artwork just keeps getting better and more creative! The pride and beaming smiles on the young artists and their families lit up the Weston Branch Library this year. And a first this year – every public and private school in Weston, plus Western High, elementary through high school, participated.” In partnership with the City of Weston, the Arts Council strives to celebrate the exceptional artwork being created in the classroom. Creative thinking is an essential skill to the current and future success of our students. During the course of the school year, our dedicated art teachers recognize works that their students create which show unique creativity and artistic ability. Each teacher selects up to 10 pieces of art per school and submits them to our showcase. Qualified members of the arts community are invited as guest judges to select placement awards in 7 different grade categories. Every student in the exhibit receives a certificate of participation and a one-day pass to Young at Art Museum.

t Gator Run Elementary, the dual language program continues to demonstrate what it means to become bilingual and biliterate in our society. The program is designed to prepare students to become global citizens through the use of academic standards and sociocultural competence in two languages. The program currently goes from Kindergarten to third grade, with a Spanish side and an English side teacher in each grade level. The main focus is to teach academic standards in a way that is engaging, rigorous and culturally relevant through the two languages. One of the most important ways in which this is done at Gator Run Elementary is through the use of teacher collaboration – both teachers in the partnership need to work cohesively in order to tackle the standards in a way that is organized and fluid between the two classrooms. In Kindergarten, to address the social studies standard of learning about community helpers and their tools, students learned about six helpers. Students created a nonfiction informative bilingual book that displayed their knowledge about each of the six community helpers they learned about throughout the unit. For example, on the first day, one group received their lesson on the doctor community helper in English and created their informational page on doctors in English, while the other group received their lesson on the police community helper in Spanish and created their informational page on doctors in Spanish. In first grade, to tackle the science standard on stars in the sky as well as some writing standards, students were able to choose the language in which they would complete their informational writing. Students used star stamps and created their own constellation tracing a line to create a design. Each student then wrote about their constellation, including why the chose to create it in that way and how many stars they utilized.

irl Scouts of Southeast Florida is partnering for the second year in a row with Ultimate Software, an American technology company headquartered in Weston, Florida, to bring south Florida girls an incredible opportunity to explore all things STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). The program, titled Ultimate STEM, will take place this October at the state-of-the-art Ultimate Software headquarters. Girls are natural born scientists who look at the world around them with curious eyes and have a passion for problem solving. Girl Scouts of the USA has made STEM programming for girls a top priority so that more girls can build confidence in these areas and find themselves in STEM careers in the future. Reports show that STEM occupations are growing at double the rate of other professions, and Girl Scouts is committed to filling the STEM workforce pipeline. This prioritization of STEM programming has had a huge social and emotional impact on girls across the country. In a study conducted by the Girl Scout Research Institute, the findings illustrate just how great the benefits are to girls when they participate in STEM programs through Girl Scouts. For instance, the ability to explore STEM in an all-girl environment makes a big difference. Girls who were surveyed agreed that there was at least one adult in their STEM program that made them feel valuable and that they felt those adults listened to girls more than they do in other places. The study also showed that Girl Scouts who participate in STEM programs develop a more positive attitude about science, technology, engineering, and math, they become more interested in taking STEM classes at school, and more than three-quarters of girls surveyed indicated they now are considering a career in STEM. Ultimate Software shares Girl Scouts’ passion to increase STEM

In second grade, to work on the standard of the life cycle of plants, the dual language students are learning all about plants by creating their own garden. They have planted green beans, corn, wildflowers, and sunflowers. Each week they will be weeding, watering, and journaling about the process. This interconnected hands-on project will incorporate math, science, and reading in both languages allowing students to make connections and expand their knowledge and vocabulary across subject areas. In third grade, to address the social studies standard of the regions of the United States, students engage in a unit where they completed two interconnected projects. First, on the Spanish side, students worked on researching a specific region of the United States, while on the English side, students picked a state from their region and researched information about the state. The students were then able to share about their regions and teach their classmates using both of their linguistic systems. Evidently, one of the most important facets of our dual language program is fostering collaborative learning experiences that help our students make connections between the languages and explore their grade-level academic standards. Our program will be expanding to fourth grade next school year and we will continue to emphasize the importance of these collaborative and hands-on experiences that allow the students to apply what they’ve learned in meaningful ways and through two languages! Gator Run Elementary is located at 1101 Glades Parkway. The main school number is (754) 323-5850. Mr. Keith Peters is the school’s principal.

opportunities for girls and to close the STEM gender gap. Women are vastly underrepresented in all STEM fields. According to UNESCO, only 35% of STEM students in higher education globally are women. Worse, UNESCO estimates that only 3% of female students in higher education have chosen information and communication technology studies as a major. To help even out these numbers, Ultimate Software, in partnership with Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida, will once again provide girls a unique opportunity to spend a day exploring the wonders and magic of science where girls between kindergarten through twelfth grade will have a chance to get real, hands-on experience in various STEM areas. Last year’s programming included robotics, engineering, health science, computer technology, finance, and more. This year’s programming is shaping up to be just as exciting and substantial. Girls who are interested in being a Girl Scout to participate in STEM programming such as Ultimate STEM, or other exciting program opportunities offered through Girl Scouts can contact Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida at 561-427-0177.

That’s no easy feat,” said Sarah Burker, the Walsworth Yearbooks sales representative for the school. “Yearbooks are so important because, unlike many mementos of the year or social media, a yearbook will last forever. SCHOOLS hess is a game that has been played for ages. However, chess is not a passive and effortless activity. Chess requires complex mental work that requires players to think, value, judge, decide, and analyze the entire duration of a game. Chess is considered an intellectual game that requires analytical thinking. Playing chess provides constant challenging brain stimulation. For this reason, chess is beneficial to children and their development. Chess is used as a tool to improve concentration, focus, imagination, and self-confidence in children. It is an intellectual activity in which children have fun while gaining a variety of valuable skills. Chess players must strategize to successfully “check mate” an opponent. They must also use their memory skills to successfully plan and execute a victory. These are skills that are also useful in the classroom to improve learning. Children learn to solve abstract problems on a chess board as well, that can in turn, be used in the classroom setting. Chess promotes self-confidence and respect. Students learn that practice improves one’s game much like extra practice in the classroom also improves the ability to

problem solve and recall concepts on tests and assessments. Through practice in playing chess, students learn to persevere and triumph despite difficult situations, an important life lesson. Chess also reinforces following rules to correctly play the game. Students must learn and adhere to the many rules of chess to be able to play. Respect is emphasized, a golden rule of play is that all players must shake hands before and after a match despite victory or defeat. As a result, children learn to accept the many outcomes of every game win, lose, or draw as a normality of playing the game consistently, a great lesson in sportsmanship. In the end, the most important lesson is to develop a love for thinking and the game of chess! Chess for Kids is a chess program that has been benefiting and enriching children for more than 13 years in Florida. Chess for Kids is present in private and public schools and also has convenient locations in community centers throughout Broward, Dade, and Palm Beach Counties. For more information about aftercare and chess in the classroom programs, please contact us at (954) 650-2562 or visit www.chessforkids.us.
