Editor’s Note We decided to write about party trends because many are curious about them. This is no doubt driven by the human desire that drives us to stand out, to be the first, or to be unique. However, most of the information on party trends online feels dated, and barely explores beyond the superficial level. This was not enough for us. Over the last couple of years of compiling Trend Guides, we have realised it is not easy to find professional industry research relating to party and event trends. We found that if they do exist, they tend to be written in a rather nebulous and ambiguous way. That is not a criticism though. Trend experts conduct a lot of research into ideas and themes that are bubbling up across the globe, usually through various alternative channels and underground artists. Reports are often written in a way that describes a direction or mood that is being experienced in society. These reports tend to be written to be purchased by large organisations for planning - thus inaccessible to most individuals. Trends start to disseminate when the commercial creators of fashion, design and interiors channel these moods and feelings for the general market. However, since the advent of social media and other digital channels, it’s become easier for consumers to connect with creators of new ideas, thus trends are spreading faster. Over the past 2 months, we’ve scoured Instagram, forums, papers and event industry news to get the low down for what might be trending in 2019. We’ve explored parties, events and other industries too. Whilst none of the material is groundbreaking, we do hope it can be used as a guide of ideas and directions to try. In a world saturated with fast-moving images and ideas, it is easy to feel defeated when trying to stay ahead of the pack. What we can always strive for though, is to be inspired. Not just from our own industry, but others as well. This way, we stay fresh, and in the process, put our own unique twist on the ideas we are channelling.

Party Trends We Love! With so many awesome trends being spied on Instagram, we wanted to create a fun photoshoot to have the opportunity to indulge in these trends ourselves! Here is how our party, which coincided with Valentine’s Day, panned out. Balloon Installations These blasts of joy have captivated us since the dawn of party decorating, and more so since Geronimo burst onto the scene. They continue to have renewed life with massive installations and interesting shapes. Neon Signs Nothing says ‘on-trend’ party more than a neon sign! A fun and funky way to create an impact, and if you dare, create a whole wall of them like those from Electric Confetti at Sugar Republic. Dessert Walls The good old donut wall has evolved from a geometrically shaped board with spokes to amazingly shaped creations hosting dessert delights! Check out XOXO Design for a range in acrylic too. Printed Cake Wraps Such a brilliant way to inject colour into cakes and customise to your party design! We have loved seeing these creep into our feeds this year. You can see more via Hansel & Gretel Cakes and Zahari by Dina. Transparent Decor It’s not only chairs and tables getting the transparent treatment. Beautifully layered acrylic decor that gives the illusion of a floating effect have truly captivated us recently. 6

Stationery Trends The last five years have seen a massive shift towards personalisation and bespoke touches in party stationery. This can be attributed to the proliferation of graphics software, and the digitisation of printing and paper handling. We’ve now got access to amazing materials and machinery for creating unique pieces. This has led to some of the most defining trends of late, including that ever-popular mainstay, foil stamping. This has made customised stationery more accessible to all consumers – a trend in itself. A stunning set is not just for weddings anymore, but all events. In addition, we are no longer limited to invitations. We now have access to a whole suite of custom products for all events, from favour tags, to welcome posters. Die-cutting is nothing new, however, it is one of the most expensive processes to gain accessibility recently. It has not yet enjoyed the same level of success as other processes such as foiling and letterpress, but 2019 definitely is the time for die-cut

invitations, elements and embellishments to have their time in the sun! White ink is a recent printing technique that has also seen its popularity increase over the last year. Paired with strikingly dark papers, it makes for stunning effects. Beautiful dark papers and cardstock will also dominate as a result of this. Paper is not the only medium being used in 2019. Printing (rather than just etching) on non-traditional materials is another technique that is gaining ground. In addition to unique printing and finishing techniques, crafty embellishments will also make an appearance. Playful and casual typography will emerge too. It’s safe to say that the sun has set on brush font, but modern, mid-weight script fonts will continue to trend. Outlined fonts and handwritten block lettering will make a mark. Paired with quirky patterns and custom cartoon-style illustrations we will see the ultimate culmination of stationery reflective of the individual.

Wedding Stationery BLUSHING CONFETTI CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER, ELLEN POWELL

A wedding invitation is your guests’ first glimpse of your big day, and the thing that sets the tone for what’s in store! We’re expecting big things from happy couples in 2019, with weddings dominated by bold, moody colour schemes that enhance all the feelings of romance, and let’s not forget our obsession with anything personalised when it comes to wedding stationery. Here is a rundown of trends that look to dominate. Invitation belly bands At Blushing Confetti, we are loving invitation belly bands (you know, the cute paper that holds it all together!) with a story, poem or meaningful quote. It’s a small detail often overlooked, but the perfect way to add a special touch to the invitation.

fading just yet. True to Blushing Confetti’s renowned style, our Something In The Way She Moves wedding collection’s delicate rose gold foil lettering brings a touch of sparkle to the stunning grey stock, which oozes sophisticated luxury without breaking the bank. It’s a simple touch that makes all the difference when it comes to creating a modern look we know couples are already chasing for their 2019 weddings. Translucent layered paper Finally, we are seeing a major comeback for the humble translucent sheets of layered paper. While some may remember these being huge for noughties weddings, when there was a serious layering trend, we’re calling it now - Vellum is making a comeback! This light, cotton blend paper has a beautiful translucent, frosted finish and is the perfect way to line coloured stock with a subtle, hand-drawn print. It is also sturdy enough to be printed on for the actual invitation. A look we love for 2019 is wedding stationery finished with white ink on a translucent vellum.

Romantic quotes and poems are also a great way to personalise your wedding stationery in a way that sets the tone for the wedding and reflects you and your special someone’s unique love for each other. We’re expecting these to really take off in 2019 as couples Whether your wedding is set to be formal, remain determined to be different and create traditional, relaxed or a full-blown party, a day that is uniquely ‘them’. the Blushing Confetti team is excited to help bring 2019 brides and grooms’ dream Luxe rose gold foiling weddings to life with stationery that wows! Colour Trends Traditionally, colour trends have tended to emerge from the fashion and interiors industries. However, with the domination of services like Shutterstock and other image and illustration marketplaces, data is strongly starting to influence the trends too. At the top of the chain for all colour directions is, of course, Pantone. Living Coral is Pantone’s colour of the year and is full of life-affirming connotations such as ‘vibrant’, ‘spirited’ and ‘nourishment’. It creates stunning looks when matched with black, or pair it with citrus brights for a livelier look. We’re pretty sure it will be the colour du jour for 2019, along with similarly beautiful apricot and salmon. Whilst Pantone’s colour is organic and grounded in the living world, the team at Shutterstock are predicting a slightly more different story with neon brights for 2019. The three dominant hues, are the techy influenced UFO Green, Plastic Pink, and Proton Purple. It’s very telling that a digital organisation has picked three out-of-this-world super bright hues. These colours are usually more difficult to achieve on printed mediums, but are easily created in digital mediums

(look up CMYK vs RGB to find out why). The three colours are definitely dominating online art. However, with technology progressing, it is possible to create such colour schemes in the real world, even on different mediums, as can be seen in the work of Sugar and Salt Cookies, In this ultra bright landscape, even pastels are not expected to be muted, but rather will emerge as ‘punchy pastels’ with vivid pops of colour. In the fashion world, NYFW S/S19 was all about ‘unrestrained colour’, with shades like fiesta, jester red, pink peacock, aspen gold and princess blue dominating. With all these vivid lashings of colour, do not be surprised if seriously bright colour blocking pops up on surfaces everywhere. Although many punters are putting their money on lots of lively colour, neutrals are expected to make their presence known too. Think browny and greyish based tones that can be seen on organic cotton and linens. As a backlash to teal and forest green, alternative greens could dominate, such as seafoam green and khaki green.

Decor Trends

It’s hard to define what might overshadow beautiful balloons and balloon installations as the next emerging party decor trend. Balloons have no doubt seen a new life though, with a trend popping up late in the year of shaping and sculpting balloons into objects such as trees, hearts and more. Enormous and breathtaking tassels such as those seen by Bangin’ Hangin’s and The Color Condition will also continue to excite, with stylists and other creatives pushing into new directions via different materials, 3D effects and sky high limits. The best example of this can be seen by a US-based artist called Corrie in Color, who uses paper to create amazing 3D effects and super tall installations. Speaking of 3D effects, we can expect to see lots of piñata style diamond hangings and embellishment as we start to use fringed paper in our decor more often. Hanging objects is another direction which will emerge. In addition, balloons, macramé and various materials will be sculpted to emulate hanging lights. Lighting itself will be a huge area of exploration. Pushing past marquee lights and neon lights, the influence of the

interiors industry will see unique lighting soar, not just in corporate event styling, but also parties. On the furnishings and prop side, velvet and cane and bamboo are highly sought after. Unique chairs, in particular, will trend, with the wire chair look still dominating. Stylists are definitely not afraid to push boundaries, and even basic objects such as milk crates and cinderblocks will be used in styling. In terms of new textures, it won’t be uncommon to start seeing terracotta elements in parties, no doubt encouraged by the popularity of Living Coral. Typography will become centre stage in decor with laser cut letters being attached directly onto walls and adhered to cakes for floating effects. The 90s and ’00s will be the eras that dominate, however, there will be a slight 50’s tip as the mid-century modern style begins to take hold. On the paper goods front, unique shapes and die cut elements are dominating as we see more die cut bunting and uniquely shaped plates gain popularity.

Dessert Trends Without a doubt, cakes and desserts form the most important part of any party. Often the most frequently asked question at any celebration is ‘Where’s the cake?’ Here is the direction we are seeing for the year. There had been a few suggestions of square cakes emerging as a new trend, but this no doubt has been displaced by the presence of rectangle cakes! This one has been bubbling up since 2018. A style attributed to Sincerely Sam cakes, the last few months has seen plenty of cakers put their own spin on it, and we love it! Sheet cakes are also seeing a resurgence. Whether they are decorated in a retro ironic way with loads of white creamy swirls or modernised with edible paper, meringue kisses and drips, we expect to see more of them in 2019. Speaking of edible paper, this medium is allowing bakers to explore creativity with a fervour not seen before. Technology is a driver of trends in many aspects, and this is definitely one of those. Edible printed paper has been helping bakers achieve many interesting and creative effects, especially one we’ve been

seeing a lot of recently, the wrapped cake emblazoned with an on-trend pattern. Other methods of decoration are also starting to prevail. We’ve seen the shag cake as a style emerging, but embroidery cake is another idea bubbling up. Isomalt too has also played its part in creating interesting effects. This ingredient has been providing bakers with beautiful sculptural creations for cakes for a while, but in 2019 we will see an ultra level of experimentation such as this mosaic cake pictured. Unique flavours are another recurring theme. We’ve already seen flavours like matcha take over the dessert world, but in 2019 we’ll have an abundance of natural and botanical flavours too. One that is being spoken about is beet cake. Along with these new (and natural) flavours comes a trend for healthy superfood cakes - a natural progression from raw and vegan cakes of late. Finally, following on from cupcakes, donuts and dessert cups, we predict this year may be the year humble tarts and slices start to make more of an impression.

Decorating and more WITH COMMIE’S CUPCAKES FOUNDER AMBER COMADIRA-SMITH

2018 brought us so many fantastic trends, from whimsical watercolour cakes to lush botanicals. We’re finally experiencing a shift away from naked cakes and we’re embracing new possibilities for event desserts and cakes. What dessert trends do I anticipate this year? Here are my top 5 sweetest dessert trends for 2019. Painted Buttercream These cakes were definitely a “thing” in 2018, but expect this amazing trend to go next level and grow huge in popularity this year. I absolutely love looking at these cakes it’s such a talent! Just like a painter with a brush, these cake artists use cake as their canvas and buttercream to paint. The end result is so artistic, three dimensional and beautifully detailed. We’ll see many cake artists play with abstract lines and shapes, sculpted flowers and portraiture. Ruby Chocolate This new chocolate was highly anticipated and said to be the new big trend in the chocolate world in 2018. Not only is the chocolate colourful, but it’s said to have a natural berry flavour. YUM! We haven’t seen much of this mysterious new chocolate on the usual social feeds. I anticipate that once this chocolate becomes widely available to the public, we’ll be seeing heaps of ruby chocolate desserts - brownies, cheesecake, drip cakes - you name it. This is the year for ruby chocolate experimentation!

Pie Art Decorated pies will compete for the top place at the dessert table this year - the humble pie has been given a stunning makeover, These pies feature beautiful pastry art that is too amazing to eat. Reinvented classics The old-school desserts are back...and oh the nostalgia! This year I anticipate that we’ll be seeing a lot of reinvented classics with a twist. Just like Disney, who are remaking all their popular childhood movies, dessert makers and party entertainers will be following suit. We’ll head back to the land of with classic desserts and treats, like the iced vovo, caramel slice, churros, cobblers and more! These traditional, reinvented classics will be the hit of the party. Black wedding cakes The thought of a black wedding cake might seem a little taboo, but these cakes create a fashion-forward statement that’s sure to ‘wow’ any guest. Traditional white almost seems boring when compared to this emerging cake trend! The towering black cakes serve as a moody and dramatic statement piece that are a beautiful alternative to the traditional white cake. I predict that many brides will opt away from the classic white, in favour of a black cake that can express their personal style and taste. Will you dare to create a black cake for your next party?

Theme Trends

The magical, the colourful and the retro are three directions which we are predicting will influence party trends this year. First off, in the world of movies, fantasy will take centre stage with new instalments from Mary Poppins, How to Train your Dragon, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and Game of Thrones. These are all set to make a mark on parties. With all this magic in the air, we can expect to see some very grown-up fantasy themes like fortune teller, and a fantastical take on the moon, celestial themes and even constellations. In the Disney stable, Frozen, Lion King, Dumbo and Penguins will definitely have an impact. Expect to see winter wonderlands, elephants, jungle and safari themed parties (quite dominant in 2018). With the release of Aladdin, we may see more parties inspired by the mythical Arabian Nights tales. The kids’ party animal du jour could quite possibly be the shark (much to parent’s annoyance), with many little ones possibly requesting it from their fondness of the viral song. Speaking of music, the festival life will be shaping parties for a while, especially

Coachella themed parties, This will also breathe new life into the boho theme. Continuing on to pattern trends, daisies and cherries will be popular. With wildly bright colours and animal prints being a dominant trend in fashion this year, we might also see animal print parties in neons and other intense colours, especially at bachelorette and hen’s dos. As has been the case in the last few years in fashion, the ’90s will impact party themes along with the ’70s (disco parties will be everywhere). Contributing to the 90’s feel, chain patterns and motifs will begin to appear. Army will also start to emerge, as well as gingham. Stripes will make a huge resurgence but rather than being dominant will appear complementary, as has been seen recently with the use of striped balloons. Off the back of stripes, French chic, nautical and sailing parties will also begin to emerge, Finally, with the ever-growing popularity of quotes and memes, we see more parties themed around tongue in cheek quotes, internet slang, and puns.

DOROTHY POLKA, EDITOR OF POLKA DOT BRIDE

In 2019 we are going to be seeing incredible wow factors, but in carefully planned out ways. For example, think beautiful neutral colour palettes with an over the top single floral installation. Or, a classically styled wedding with a stunning, almost sculptural bouquet. Another example would be a beautiful beachside wedding where the bride wears a gown with an epic statement train. Couples are working to curate their style to really make use of individual, artisan, and unexpected elements. There’s less in your

face glamour, and more show stopping moments that are completely unexpected. Florals will continue to make their statement, but we will also see more unexpected uses of foliage and unusual blooms for modern, sculptural arrangements. Gowns will be fashion forward, making use of breathtaking, textural fabrics, and locations will be unexpected spaces that tell their own special story. This is the season where personalisation marries utter style.

MICHELLE ANDERSON, WEDDING & EVENT DIRECTOR, COMPLETE THE LOOK

In 2019, the biggest luxury wedding theme will be the personalisation and customisation of all experience based elements at one’s wedding. I calling this ‘The Journey’. The Journey will encompass all aspects of the event. For example custom menus, cocktails, entertainment, lighting, travel, accommodation and interactive experiences outside the wedding day. This theme will revolve around destination based exclusive use properties that allow full and holistic design and the freedom to express unique love stories.

In terms of decor, the use of layering, textures and clean lines will be increasingly utilised in 2019. We’ll see minimalist and immaculate tablescapes with large ceiling installations full of personality and character. The table decor will include low lying centerpieces incorporating a range of different elements that may move away from florals and greenery. We’ll also see an increased movement towards transparent or translucent elements that will draw the guests attention, for example, glass or clear charger plates, glassware, seating cards, and menus. Balloons will still be featured in 2019 decor and may be in the form of large or single installations. These designs will represent renewal and a new beginning. We should still see some themes transition from 2018 to 2019 in slightly altered forms such as whimsical, industrial, extreme glamour and elegant luxury. Some themes, like traditional rustic, over the top tropical, boho chic and classic vintage will begin to fade.

Lights, Flowers, Party! There’s nothing like the right lighting to take a beautiful flower arrangement to the next level. Neon signs paired with floral arbours and installations will continue to be a popular look in the year ahead. If you’re on a budget, pillar candles, Edison bulbs or festoon lights will also work a treat alongside floral arrangements.

Work with your venue Installations remain on trend but now there is a very strong emphasis on creating displays that work with and enhance the specific venue. Instead of finding a picture of an installation on Pinterest and replicating it, do a venue walk-through with your florist and brainstorm how flowers could be used in that particular space. Interesting features like ledges, curving

Let’s hear it for Coral Blush has been a very popular tone in flower arrangements for the past few years but with the announcement of Living Coral as Pantone’s 2019 Colour of the Year, we’re likely to find peachy and apricot tones creeping into floral palettes to complement or even replace pinks. While we’re on the topic of colour, you can also expect to see darker, richer palettes becoming more popular. 36

staircases, statement lights and roof beams can all inspire a unique floral statement. If you’re on a budget but would love to have an installation, keep other floral decorations to a minimum and focus your efforts on creating one display with tons of wow factor. Wild and textured Arrangements in free-flowing, natural shapes remain popular but now textured elements are adding an extra dimension to this look. Pampas grass and cotton has been popping up a lot, but elements like dried flowers and foliage, furry proteas and banksias, gum nuts and seed pods can all create a textured effect.

Elsa and Anna will remain popular with a surge in Frozen excitement when Frozen 2 arrives in cinemas in November. Unicorns won’t disappear either, however the llama is expected to make a big impact on the party scene this year. We’ve already started to see the llama in tableware, cake designs and even party games (pin the tail on the llama, anyone?). Less generic themes such as LOL Surprise Dolls continue to prove very popular among the 6-8 year olds who have outgrown enchanted characters such as fairies and princesses. Parents will continue to inject creativity into their children’s party with a large emphasis on creating that “WOW” factor with balloons, extraordinary cakes, entertainment and treats themed around their children’s favourite trend.

Gnomes, lumberjack, sloth and dinosaur parties will be popular on the party circuit in 2019. Blending woodland themes (think mushroom caps, foxes, hedgehogs) with gnomes will also be a fun way to have a gender-neutral kid’s party. Dinosaurs have been gaining popularity for years now, but will ramp with the release of the Jurassic Park 4). Lumberjack themes are a silly way to incorporate plaid and beards no matter the age and work with woodland themes as well. Try a pink plaid and pink beards for a girl’s lumberjack party. Throw a sloth and a rainforest theme bash — and you can carry the theme with party and balloon décor seamlessly!

FEATURE This year promises to be full of the brightest colours, velvet touches, curvy lines and retro vintage with a modern twist. Let’s take a look at the trends for 2019 that will showcase the cohesive blend of décor and party spaces!

COLOUR: THE WORLD IS YOUR RAINBOW Pantone Colour of the Year Coral is sociable, warm and spirited. It is a bright, happy colour — evocative of movement and playfulness. This colour will be in everything from home décor, to fashion to party décor. It can be used minimally for a pop or as a broad stroke with other colours or patterns. Try it on your front door for a bold statement, as a crib or a balloon garland.

Bold Primary Colours Sharing centre stage with coral will be bold primary colours: Bold rusty reds, deep indigo blues, and a bright mustard yellow are at the forefront of the latest décor collections. The colours range from blues the colour of the sea to a midnight sky, poppy reds and oranges that harken to sunsets in the desert and yellows like amber, honey and marigolds. This is an easy way to incorporate trends through paint, accents like pillows, chandeliers or wall art. Myriad of Pinks Pink is here to stay in 2019. From Millennial Pink, Ballet Pink, to Rosé and Pink Peacock —pink is here in all its shades — soft, loud and in between. Pink is seriously so versatile. Install raspberry pink cabinets in your kitchen, or paint a soft desert pink wall in your bedroom. Try a hint of pink for drapes or go bold for a hot pink in candlesticks.

DECOR: RETRO RAD Retro style stays hip and modern with a contemporary edge ranging from colour palettes to patterns. It’s easy to be inspired by the past. Think Hollywood Regency, Palm Springs Resort and Art Deco. Photographers like Slim Aarons are popular for the iconic feel they bring. Incorporate statement furniture pieces like a glass cabinet or a vintage light in dining room. Decorate with large-scale motifs like palm leaves and 70’s graphics and fonts. Scallops and Scales Trending this year will be curves, scalloped edges and curved corners in homes and furniture. This trend is all things curved, wavy and ocean-inspired. Embrace curvy beds, chairs and couches or install kitchen tile in a crescent silhouettes. Change out your mirrors for round, hang some circular lighting or add a side table

with curved edges. Rounded corners soften hard edges, and this trend promises to be a hit. You can also hire scalloped furniture and source paper decor or patterned items into your parties! Velvet Touch Seductive velvet beds, sofas and chairs are some of the most covetable ways to bring this look home. Velvet in party trends includes runners and linens for wedding and party tables, and balloons with velvet ribbons and tassels. The newest velvet crush is lamps with velvet shades. Perfect for a nightstand or in the living room. Gold Long dessert tables are out and dessert pedestals are in! Sleek cylindrical and square pedestal tables can be assembled in all manner of configurations and come in a variety of colours. Group together in elegant dessert displays. This is a trend to watch (continued).

THEME: COSMIC The Cosmos takes centre stage for 2019 with celestial motifs and constellations in tile, bedding, wallpaper and décor. Colors evocative of soft purples, deep blues, and matte black are great for mood enhancers in homes and décor accents. Add dark blue for a galaxy theme for weddings and baby showers. Throw a kid’s party with an outer space theme. One of the biggest new trends we will see is decorating and designing ceilings — an often-neglected space. Modernising the moon, stars and planets motif on ceilings lends a cool design element to your home, and party! Nicole Ketchum of Chandelier By NK creates modern acrylic chandeliers for party and home. We offer bright colors and fun designs that are easy DIY decor.
