JENNIFER

Dear Readers:

Happy Holidays and welcome to the winter issue of Sports & Activities Directory! I am very excited to be in this new role, as your publisher of the first issue of Central Broward Sports & Activities Directory this winter. Many of you know me as the publisher of Plantation Sports & Activities Directory. I am very grateful to have the opportunity to take on Davie, Cooper City & SW Ranches in addition to Plantation to create one Directory that serves all Central Broward. I am confident that this issue will serve our readers’ needs by offering greater access to more programs, sports, activities, events, products & services. And our advertisers are happy to reach you, our loyal readers, too! There are many great choices for all family members so be sure to flip through the pages ahead.

It’s the holiday season and all our wonderful cities have plenty of fun holiday-themed events for you to enjoy. As we head into the new year, it’s a great time to get outdoors to try a new sport, visit local attractions, attend local events and enjoy the time together outside as a family. School will be out for Thanksgiving Break the week of November 21-25, and Winter Break begins on Monday, December 26 - Friday, January 6. There are many camps, programs, and activities taking place during these weeks to keep your child engaged. In addition, November is the time to register for the upcoming winter & spring sports’ seasons. You will find all the registration periods in the Main Directory (red tabbed section) of the magazine including baseball, basketball, flag football, soccer, rugby and softball. Enrichment programs and activities are ongoing and include dance, gymnastics, martial arts, golf and tennis, most of which offer school days off and week-long camps, too!

If you are new to the area or have just found Sports & Activities Directory for the first time, please read through and enjoy, like our Facebook Page @ SportsandActivitiesDirectory and visit our website at www.SportsandActivities.com to view the digital editions of all four of our area publications throughout Broward County. All advertisements have live web-links in their ads, so you can easily access their websites to learn more about these family-friendly businesses in your community. Be sure to let them know you found them in Sports & Activities Directory.

I’d like to thank our issue sponsor Baptist Health that’s located right in Plantation, ready to serve all your family’s healthcare needs. Thank you for your continued readership and patronage to our clients.

I want to wish you and your family the very best this holiday season. Cheers to a happy, healthy new year!

My best to you, Anina

Dear Cooper City Residents,

The holiday season is right around the corner. We have welcomed many new neighbors to “Someplace Special”, throughout 2022. It is always thrilling to see our newest residents become part of the family fun that’s available in Cooper City, especially during this joyous time of the year. We are in the final quarter of the year which means your City Commission has finalized and approved a new budget. Cooper City’s Budget for the Fiscal Year 2023 was thoroughly analyzed, revised, and balanced by our Commission and staff. We are enhancing our outstanding City services, while approving the lowest total millage rate, of 5.875, since 2012. Numerous capital projects are funded, and the city’s infrastructure is being upgraded thanks, in part, to the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, also known as ARPA. The City Commission also utilized ARPA funding to improve upon public safety, which is our City’s top priority. We recently purchased a new fire engine, ladder truck, and fire rescue truck, after months of careful consideration to ensure these critical vehicles meet Cooper City’s needs above anything else.

An ARPA project that was finally completed was the resurfacing of our community pool at the Pool and Tennis Center. I understand the length of time it took to finish this initiative and how frustrating it was for our residents, as well as it was for the City Commission. I am grateful that the pool is now open and available to the great residents of “Someplace Special.” If you have not visited the Pool and Tennis Center, I strongly urge you to drop by and check it out. The pool is just one of the amenities available to you. There are tennis, basketball, and beach volleyball courts to go along with a recently upgraded gym that can meet your health and fitness needs. When you come to visit, ask for Joseph Cabret. Joe, our City’s Recreation Leader, can provide a tour of the facility and explain how to use the fitness equipment and discuss the membership packages. The Pool and Tennis Center is located within the Rock Creek Community at 11600 Stonebridge Parkway. I know fitness goals and New Year’s resolutions, go hand in hand, but you do not have to wait until we ring in 2023 to get started.

I would like to be among the first to recognize and thank our nation’s heroes on this Veterans Day! Cooper City will hold its Veterans Day Ceremony at Memorial Park on Friday, November 11, at 11:00AM.

I began by touching upon the joy of seeing our newest neighbors engage in the fabric of what makes Cooper City “Someplace Special.” “Light Up Cooper City” is a marquee event that allows all residents to enjoy the unique qualities of our family-centric community. Local businesses and organizations come together, students perform holiday routines on the main stage, activities are held in the Community Center, and Santa Claus arrives just in time to help us light up thousands of lights in Memorial Park. Please mark your calendar and join us on Friday, December 2, at 6:30PM for this incredible event. More information is online at www.CooperCity.gov/Calendar.

It is a privilege to represent and serve the great citizens of Cooper City. As always, feel free to contact my office with any questions or concerns you may have by dialing 954-434-4300 and pressing option #6.

Central Broward Directory (Davie Cooper City SW Ranches & Plantation) | Issue 59 | November 2022January 2023 8

Dear Davie Residents,

I hope that everyone has had a great start to the school year and that both Davie students and teachers’ academic endeavors are off to a successful beginning. It’s hard to believe that the holidays are right around the corner again!

As we move from the fall season into the winter months, the Town of Davie’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has numerous programs, activities, and community events for both Davie residents and visitors. We begin the month of November with a tribute to our servicemen and women as we honor our American heroes at the Town of Davie’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony at Veterans Park on Friday, November 11 at 10:00AM. Parking at Veterans Park is limited, so a shuttle service from the Davie Arena at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds will be available for anyone who would like a convenient way to attend the event. The Town’s annual Holiday Craft Show and Green Fair will take place on November 19 and 20 inside the Davie Arena at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds with over 100 local arts, crafts, plant, and green product vendors selling handmade goods. Activities also include local entertainment, vendor demonstrations, and kids’ activities. Admission is free, and food and beverage will be available for purchase. On Saturday, December 3, Town Councilmembers, the Vice-Mayor, and I will “flip the switch” during our annual Holiday Lighting of the Greens event at Bamford Sports Complex in Pine Island Park. Join us for a night of fun that will include pictures with Santa, a lighted Horse Parade, live performances, youth activities and games.

The Davie Arena at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds, home of the Davie Pro Rodeo, welcomes back the Southeastern Circuit Rodeo Finals on November 11-13. Cowboys and Cowgirls from across the Southeast United States will compete over the three days for a chance to move on to the National Rodeo Finals. In addition to experiencing exciting rodeo action, we invite everyone to attend the Championship Buckle Presentations after each Southeastern Circuit Finals Rodeo performance. For ticket information, please visit www.davieprorodeo.com.

The Davie Arena at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds holds numerous events throughout the year. Our multiuse facility is available for corporate events, car shows, craft shows, competitions, community events, concerts and festivals. We are always looking for new events to be held at the facility. If you are interested in hosting an event, please contact the Town’s Special Events division at (954) 797-1181.

The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department offers a wide range of exciting youth sports programs throughout the year. Youth sports help children develop physical skills, get exercise, make friends, learn teamwork, learn to play fair, improve self-esteem, and most importantly have fun. Registration for Spring Baseball will begin January 3, 2023, through February 6, 2023, for ages 3 - 13 years old. For more information on this incredible opportunity for the youth of Davie, please call (954) 327-3929.

As always, remember if it’s swimming, fitness, youth sports, community special events or recreation classes the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has activities for all ages and for everyone in your family. For more information on any Davie program or event, just call (954) 327-3941 or visit the Town of Davie website at www.davie-fl.gov.

See you in the parks, and don’t forget to “Like” us on Facebook.

Kindness multiplied is the culture of caring for others while building stronger community is the Harvest Drive theme for this year. This is nothing new for Renee Herman who founded this grass roots non-profit organization 30 years ago on the principle of teaching children the importance of compassion and empathy for others. What began as an annual Thanksgiving Drive had blossomed into a year-round volunteer-driven effort approximately 20 years ago. Entering its 30th year, Harvest Drive continues its tradition by once again helping families to have a bountiful Thanksgiving feast and enough groceries for the holiday week.

You may ask, how can I help and make a difference for the local school families? The ultimate success of the Harvest Drive rests on the generosity of the community through monetary donations and non-perishable food. We are committed to assisting families year-round with monthly food packings and 3 school pantries.

Renee says acts of kindness like this is what inspires her to continue her mission as she hears truly heartbreaking stories of families struggling to put food on the table for their children. It’s important for us to keep the momentum up as the Harvest Drive shifts into high gear. Over the next month

Renee and Team Harvest will be working almost around-theclock to get the record 13 distribution sites up and running, in addition to coordinating donations from approximately 200 participating schools across Broward County.

All donations can be dropped off to our Flagship School at Western High School Mini Gym on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, from 3:00pm-9:00pm. Call for other drop off locations or if you have any other questions. Renee Herman at (954) 444-5548 or renee.herman@harvestdriveflorida.com.

The Harvest Drive Team is very grateful to you and the community for your continued support! “Children Helping Children” remains the mission of the Harvest Drive.

A Guide to Enjoying Your Family Travels

The holiday season is around the corner. They are both an exciting and stressful time, especially if you are planning on traveling with small children because of fear of misbehaving. Here is a practical guide to enjoying your family travels, creating lasting memories, and raising adventurous children.

Before Traveling

Start talking about the trip with your child weeks or months before. Utilize pictures or read them stories about airplanes or other activities you might be doing. If possible, plan to stay in places similar to your home. Instead of at a hotel, you may stay in an apartment where the child can keep routines like playing or taking a nap.

Train your child to be patient. Vacation trips often include a lot of waiting (e.g., boarding airplanes). One way to increase patience is to use a “First/Then” interaction style. When your child asks for their tablet around a meal time, you would reply, “first you need to eat, then you can earn your tablet.” The goal is to be concise and clear: First this, then that. When your child completes your request, you would immediately give them the promised reward. This will create the expectation that following times when you say “first,” they will trust you to comply. Establish this dynamic before traveling.

During the Trip

When traveling with young children embrace empathy and flexibility. Empathy to understand that children will become exhausted from traveling. Flexibility to stay calm and content even when plans need to be altered from your original goal. Flexibility in scheduling is important to allow for resting moments: for children and yourselves!

Remember to reinforce positive behavior. When your child is quiet, tell them, “I like it when you are calm and playing with your toys.” At times, if your children do not receive your attention when they behave well, they can find less appropriate ways to get it.

Another very effective strategy is to save their favorite toy for critical moments. For example, if your child loves to play on your phone, save it fort moments when they must be calm (i.e., passport checking).

After the Trip

Every trip can become a learning opportunity. Take time to revisit the trip memories with your child. Consistently reinforce for behaving well and continue applying the “first/then” technique. These strategies will improve their behavior each time, and your vacations will be increasingly enjoyable.

At the heart of Cooper City High School’s long-standing tradition of excellence and A+ status is an unstoppable community spirit encapsulated in two words: “Cowboy Pride.” The award-winning Broward County high school is proud to showcase top-notch academic courses of study, award winning service and performing arts programs, and championship title-holding athletic teams. Our school is home to rigorous diploma tracks, such as the Advanced Placement Capstone Diploma, which challenges scholars to achieve passing scores on a minimum of four Advanced Placement courses of their choice as well as two advanced level research courses where scholars engage in building the skills necessary to engage in a school year long original research study. Our AICE Cambridge Diploma program is four years young and growing exponentially, affording more students than ever with the opportunity to earn the prestigious Bright Futures scholarship. And, the newest course offerings, Pre AP classes, are designed to scaffold the skills necessary for all students to have the necessary scaffolding to reach their greatest potential, both in high school and beyond.

Student success is often measured by academics; however, fostering a community of excellence involves more than rigorous studies. Extracurricular involvement options are diverse and plentiful with more than 50 clubs to choose from, such as the Cooper City High School Sound of Pride Band and Color Guard, our award-winning thespian program, and our champion-building athletic department, highlight our school’s commitment to “whole child” learning and growth mindset. Research has shown time and time again that well-nurtured emotional health and well-being is a vital foundation for success in education, and the Cowboy faculty and staff work hard to ensure that students feel safe and connected both on campus and off. Proud Principal Vera Perkovic’s passion for building community through kindness and connection is a driving force for developing a sense of belonging in as many ways possible, because, as she often says, “Anything IS Possible.”

Our new theme for school pride this year is “Cowboy Fridays.” Designed to boost student involvement while having a little fun, this weather-permitting weekly lunch- time event encourages students and school personnel to relax and connect with one another while engaging in activities such as courtyard volleyball and ping pong; larger-than-life games such as Jenga and Connect Four, and creative activities include sidewalk chalk art. During A and B lunches, a team of spirited Cowboy scholars, led by newly appointed Activities Director Nicole Hicks, transform the middle courtyard (home to the Brotherhood plaque and Peace Poll) into a Cowboy “block party” reminiscent of the beloved and often missed “Fun Fridays” from students’ elementary school days. On any given Friday, one can follow the music to find teachers, students, administration, and volunteers rocking out and dancing to tunes like the “Cha Cha Slide” and “Cotton Eye Joe.” The laughter and camaraderie that can be seen during these moments is a poignant reminder of how much we truly are “better together” and underscores the joy of being back to a full campus of scholars and staff after far too many months of being apart. The entire Cowboy campus looks forward to adding and enhancing this event to include as many opportunities for engagement as possible, and we invite community sponsors and donors to help continue to build resources for this important initiative.

The Hungry Caterpillar came to visit Mirror Lake Elementary in early September. In honor of early literacy month, Mirror Lake’s students in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten had the chance to meet the hungry caterpillar and take group photos at a live story book event held in the school’s media center. The children filed in by class. All the students were excited to meet The Caterpillar, the storybook character and take photos together with their class and teachers. Afterwards, each class took their seat on the rug in the media center where Mrs. Veliz, the school’s principal, read The Hungry Caterpillar storybook to them. The children really enjoyed story time, which was followed by a short movie about the book. Afterwards, there was an opportunity for each student to participate in arts & crafts related to the storybook. The parents were invited to attend the event and it was lovely to have them back on campus, in person again. The students were happy to have their parents/ grandparents in attendance, too.

Mirror Lake Elementary is proud to offer several programs for students with different abilities. The school currently offers pre-kindergarten speech, specialized, and intensive classes that are focused on increasing language and independence. The school also offers an elementary level special program for students with autism. Inclusion is an important part of the school culture, and all pre-k and kindergarten students enjoyed this multi-sensory literacy experience. The principals, faculty and staff all provide a calm, patient, and loving environment for their students. They are happy to encourage each child to be the best that they can be. Mirror Lake Elementary is a hidden gem in Plantation and is part of the Broward County Public School System. A big thank you to the principals, faculty, and staff for making this event so special for the students!

Mirror Lake Elementary is located at 1200 NW 72nd Ave, Plantation, 33313 and can be reached at (754) 322-7100.

Fall has arrived and so has the Harvest Drive! Once again students, staff, and families at Fox Trail Elementary School will be preparing for the Harvest Drive. During the months of October and November, Kindergarten through fifth grade classes collect thousands of non-perishable food items and monetary donations to assist food insecure families in Broward County Public Schools. The reason they pack hundreds of boxes with food is because many families do not have enough food to eat. The students are encouraged to become caring people by giving what they have to other families in need. This experience provides the students with an opportunity to be leaders and to give back to the community in which they live.

All the students at Fox Trail participate in a friendly competition to see which grade level will collect the most items for the Harvest Drive. The grade that collects the most items wins a prize, but the real reward is the students’ accomplished feelings of helping others. After the collection has been received, thousands of items are loaded up into Fox Trail staff’s cars, who take the donations to Western High School in Davie. Once they arrive at the high school, there are hundreds of volunteers available to help unload the cars and bring the collections into the gymnasium at Western. It is amazing to see. The generous spirit of Fox Trail students and their families is inspirational. We are looking forward to this year’s Harvest Drive and are thankful to be able to participate in this great community event. Fox Trail Elementary School is located at 1250 S. Nob Hill Road, Davie 33324 and can be reached at (754) 323-5800.

It may be hard to hear your child declare their dislike of reading, but there is a reason for it—probably several, in fact. Children who are lacking some of the reading building blocks that are essential for reading fluency and comprehension might find the entire process frustrating and avoid it altogether. What can you do? Make sure your child has the basics down, then help them rediscover reading as an enjoyable pastime. Here are several tips:

Read together and pay attention. You might not be an expert in reading instruction, but if you observe your child’s reading, you will pick up what they do well and where they have difficulty. Listen for how they sound out words and word sounds (phonics) and whether they recognize sight words that don’t sound like they are spelled (for example, the). Take note of whether your child recognizes patterns and letter behaviors and decodes words to break down longer words into smaller words.

Let your child choose their own reading material. Whatever type of reading material piques your child’s interest, go with it. The more your child picks their own books, the more interested in it they will be. Don’t rule out magazines, comic books, articles, riddles and other forms of reading. Go to the library often and let your child wander. Get the help of the librarian too—they are very familiar with how to engage reluctant readers with the right type of books and other material. Sometimes, it takes finding the right books to engage your child in reading.

Try to make reading fun. It’s hard to do when your child has lost interest in reading, but do your best to encourage your child to read and make reading fun. For

younger children, try matching words and pictures to work on vocabulary. Play word Bingo and other word games. Read fun and interesting books as a family with hot chocolate or lemonade after dinner a few nights a week. And as much as possible, let your child see you reading and talking about what you read with enthusiasm.

Don’t push too hard. To the struggling student, reading feels daunting and stressful. Try to ease your child’s mind a bit by setting small goals—15 minutes a day for starters. Every day that your child reads, encourage them to try reading on their own first. If they get stuck on a word or section, they can always come to you with questions. Establish the habit, but don’t force reading. If there’s a problem, it needs to be addressed before your child will ever embrace reading by choice.

When all else fails, read to your child. This might not work with older children, but if your younger child resists reading, read to them instead. Developing that listening comprehension and understanding of language is important. Plus, reading aloud will introduce your child to the joy of getting lost in a good story. Do this as much as you can while your child is still developing their own reading skills.

If your struggling reader doesn’t like reading and you’re not sure how to help, call Huntington at 1-800 CAN LEARN. We’ll do an academic evaluation of your child prior to beginning instruction so that we have a good sense of where your student is and where they should be based on their grade. Once we pinpoint any skill gaps and trouble spots, we’ll develop a personalized learning plan that will help your student succeed.
