Over the last 20 years, we are very proud of how we stayed the course to maintain our unique identity and become the only single source for recreational sports, activities, schools, and family event information in the cities where we publish. We attribute our growth to the outstanding relationships we have built in the communities we serve and by simply doing the right thing consistently. We have a genuine commitment to all of our clients’ successes. The goal has always been to create a high-quality, useful publication for our readers. Combine that with a wellestablished, targeted readership, and our long-term advertisers reap a vast return on their advertising dollars with Sports and Activities Directory. It has been our true joy to have been able to get back over $100,000 in sponsorships and donations, as well as over $3 million in pro bono advertising to date for not for profit organizations, city run programs and events, optimist clubs, schools, and youth sports teams. We hope we have been and will continue to be a source of inspiration to start a new sport or hobby, a resource to find fun things to do with the families, a lifesaver because of the important health and safety programs, a successful medium for our advertisers, and a keepsake for your family because your child made the cover or was featured in our magazine for doing some thing extraordinary. Thank you, thank you, thank you for 20 amazing years of publishing! My best to you, Kim Kadel Publisher

What started as a project to help boost awareness of every activity sport and program in Weston, turned it into a full-blown publishing business with five area magazines in Broward County and I could not be prouder to publish the Coral Springs Parkland edition for the last 9 years. We are run by a group of moms who know how valuable this publication is to our families. We do this because we love it and because we make a difference in our communities. We do this for you…our readers!

If you would like to share your thoughts about doing meaningful things, benchmarks, the passage of time, or you have questions or comments you’d like to share with me, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@cityofparkland.org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. Of course, I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to talk with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website cityofparkland.org and click on the social media icon that you prefer, to ensure that you stay informed on events and helpfulYourinformation.Parkland Mayor, Rich Walker

These benchmarks, while moments of great pride, serve to mark the passage of time much faster than we might want. So what do we do when we realize we can’t slow down time? This underscores the importance of making the most of time by doing meaningful things. For Catherine and me, volunteerism and public service have provided us with numerous opportunities to make a difference and maximize our time. These very same opportunities have also provided us with great parenting moments and permanent family memories. We fully immerse ourselves in the myriad of academic, athletic, and recreational organizations that are available. Making meaningful connections with our neighbors, while engaging with our own family is priceless. SOS Children’s Villages, located right in our backyard, offers bountiful opportunities to connect with little ones that have the ability to fill big hearts. Aston Gardens and Allegro Parkland provide opportunity to interact with seniors—many of whom are proud veterans. We see these opportunities throughout our community. Whether it’s the Mayor for a Month program or the Youth Ambassador program that the City of Parkland (City) offers its youth to be involved or one of our Advisory Boards calling residents to volunteer, it’s clear we are not alone in our desire to make the most of time. Frequently at our City Commission meetings we recognize members of our community who have volunteered, achieved a great accomplishment, or otherwise maximized their time. So as you send the kids off to another school year, or recall fondly when you did so, consider doing something meaningful before more time passes.

Dear Parkland Residents, August marks the return to school and, ultimately, the end of Summer. I know I ask this every year, but “where does the time go?” If you read this column regularly, you know that my wife Catherine and I have five children. Every August we see them off to another school year, but this year is a little different—our oldest is going to college at the University of Delaware. Now we have two children in high school, one in middle school, and our youngest in elementary school. Delaney entering college not only signifies her growth, but our family as a whole embarking on a new chapter.

Dear Coral Springs Residents, Welcome back to school teachers, administrators and students!

I hope you have a great school year! As your Mayor, one of my favorite activities is engaging with our youth. If your child from 6-18 would like to shadow me one day at City Hall for an hour or two, please call Luwam Ghermay to arrange at least two weeks in advance. Luwam can be reached at (954) 344-5906. I also love to visit classrooms and share about my role as Mayor and learn about the ideas our youth have. If you are a teacher, or class Mom or high school student reading this, feel free to call me directly at (954) 494-9872 to be a speaker. We are excited about the upcoming fiscal year as we have lots of exciting things happening including progress on our Downtown Redevelopment and completion of several construction projects that will enhance the City’s aesthetic appeal and further our commitment to Public Safety. We have so many fun family events throughout the year including our regular Bites and Sips events on the City Hall lawn. For details, please visit our website at www.coralsprings.gov. Our Commission meets twice a month and anyone from the public may attend. We meet the first and third Wednesday of every month at 6:30pm at 9500 W. Sample Road.

I am so thrilled that I get to serve as Your Mayor again for a two-year term beginning in November, as I was re-elected without opposition. Thank you to all of you who have supported me over the years. It is truly a blessing to be your Mayor. I am personally and professionally committed to the mental and physical wellness of our community. As your Mayor, you will see that our Commissioners and I will regularly invite you to participate in activities to enhance your wellness! When you read this, I will have hosted my first “Pickleball with the Mayor!” In the future, we will walk, play racquetball and tennis, and participate in many other activities as we lift the well-being of our whole community. Aside from my role as Mayor, I founded the Mental Wellness Networking Alliance (MWNA) to help break the stigma that is often associated with mental illness. I am proud to share that our last fundraiser at the Center for the Performing Arts – Voices of Angels- was so successful that we were able to donate over $20,000 to Eagles Haven! Together, we can accomplish anything! We are lucky to live in Coral Springs as we have the best Police and Fire Departments you can imagine, an incredible number of volunteers throughout our City, and great value for the tax dollars that we receive. We also love to be transparent in our Government and regularly educate our citizens through avenues like our Budget Academy and Citizens Government Academy, and we have an excellent Chamber of Commerce, who puts on regular educational sessions to lift our local businesses.

CHALLENGER LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL C hallenger Baseball started in Broward County in 1990. The Challe nger program is open to children with any disability. Thanks to the help of coaches, assistant coaches and “buddies”, all our players get to hit, field and get around the bases. Challenger is a non-competitive environment with the goal of all our players getting a chance to be part of a team sport and having a great time. Thanks to private sponsors our program is no cost to the families involved. We provide uniforms, equipment, pictures, trophies, a day at a Marlins game, a weekend in Ft Myers playing other Challenger teams, a year end picnic for all the families and more. Again, all these activities are provided at no charge. Although our target age group is 5–22 years old, many of our players are older as they have been in our program since the early years. Therefore, we now have a junior division from 5/12 years old and a senior division of 13+. Our games are Sunday afternoons at 3:30pm – 5:15pm from March- May. We play at fields throughout Broward County, so our players have home and away games. We presently play at fields in Coral Springs, Margate, Tamarac, Sunrise, Weston and Pembroke Pines. New players are always welcome. Challenger is also always looking for new sponsors and people interested in helping to run our program. Challenger is an all-volunteer organization and 100% of donated money goes directly to the program. REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! Contact Randy Hibshman (954) 345-9329, rhibshman@bellsouth.net.

3) Fill the Void: If you are going to take away screen time, it’s only fair to supply some replacement behaviors or activity options involving peer connection for your child, especially if they are using the screen to talk to friends. Activities which encourager peer interaction include team sports, gymnastics, drama, tennis, and piano. You might even be more lenient in allowing your child to hang out with neighbors or come with you to the gym. We need to replace the dopamine “kick” screens provide with some healthy socialization.

2) Explain your Reasoning: Age seven is considered the average age of reasoning, when children begin to understand the reasons behind rules. Explaining the reasons behind rules and requests yields the best behavior results. Screen time use above two hours in teenagers is associated with lower scores on language and thinking tests, poor sleep, less curiosity, a lack of self-control, and emotional instability. Even more specifically, increased screen time is directly related to higher levels of depression and eating disorders.

1) Make it Foolproof: Use an application on their phones and Ipads that automatically shuts down application use after two hours. This can prevent arguing and the need to physically remove their phone, which can feel like punishment or turn into arguments. Applications to consider using include unGlue, Norton Family, and Canopy.

Limiting Screen Time for Your Child Actually Helps Them! (Despite the Pushback)

Dr. Olivia Carelli & Dr. David Yudell

4) Use the Screen Together: When you do allow your child to use screentime, use it with them! Cultivate a curiosity about your child’s online habits. Consider learning the videogames your teen plays. Why do they like Discord or TikTok? This helps you not only build connection and trust but gain awareness regarding the safety of their behavior. When working with youth in our office we often try to gauge their ability to regulate their frustration. When applying rules for your children, those who have a difficult time regulation their emotion during disappointment are often the individuals who present with the most pushback. If their behaviors have already or start to escalate please reach out to a professional for guidance. For further information and support please contact us at 954-288-9393 or email

Yes they may argue with you, but limiting screen time for your child is helping them, not harming them. The average child spends between 5-9 hours a day on screen. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends minimal to no screen time for children under the age of 18 months and less than an hour a day for children 2-5. For children 5-17, generally no more than two hours is recommended per day, except for homework. Here are some helpful tools and tips for setting limits and dealing with pushback.

I hope everyone’s school year has gotten off to a great start. As a mom of two children who are now grown up, I can certainly relate for those of you sending your children off to preschool, kindergarten, or college for the first time. It can be hard. However, be assured that your child can manage the new situation, and more importantly let them know that you know they can handle it and that you will always be there to support them. I wish everyone a wonderful rest of the new school year and a safe and joyous holiday season. We in the Legislature approved some sales tax holidays that continue in Florida. The tool time tax holiday is from 9/3-9/9 and includes some hand tools, power tools, flashlights, etc. You can find more information at FloridaRevenue.com/ToolTime. Additionally, the Baby and Toddler Clothing and Diaper sales tax holiday is ongoing through June 3, 2023. For information on all qualifying purchases, visit FloridaRevenue.com/ DiapersandClothing. Riverglades is excited about the 2022-2023 school year. Last year our theme was “We’re Back on Track for Success” and that’s exactly what we did! We worked hard, stayed the course, and earned the grade as an A school once again! We are so proud of the effort and work that our teachers, students, and staff put into making the school year a Thissuccess.yearwe are thrilled to build on that progress. We are gearing up for another amazing year. Our theme for the 2022-2023 school year is “It’s a Great Day to Be a Gator!”

R: Respect Everyone. At Riverglades, we want every staff member to feel respected. We want our students to understand what it means not only to respect adults, but also each other. This year we will focus on developing students who are mindful of their classmates, teachers, and school to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

S: Speak the truth. As part of the Riverglades LifeSkills, we want to develop students of integrity. We want our students to learn the importance of speaking the truth and the dangers of telling falsehoods. This year we will focus on teaching our students this skill so that they can embrace the value in being honest and trustworthy. As we focus on these LifeSkills, it is our hope that our students will become exemplary citizens at school, home, and in the community. We are looking forward to an amazing year of great academic and social growth. We believe that this year will be a year filled with positive experiences that leaves each child, staff member and parent with the feeling that “It’s a Great Day to be a Gator.”

We focus on building a love of reading, project-based learning, student collaboration, and providing targeted support for students who need it. We encourage our families to get involved through the PTA and by joining us for our School Advisory meetings. Our PTA organizes many fundraising activities and special events throughout the year. Throughout the challenges of the pandemic, the Riverglades Gators came together with a spirit of camaraderie and support. As a result, this year we want to highlight what it means to be a Riverglades Gator. Our teachers and staff will continue to teach and model the LifeSkills and expectations of being a Riverglades Gator.

G: Give Your Best. As a Gator we always strive for our best. No matter what our role is in the Riverglades Family, as a Gator we always put forth our best efforts. This year we will continue teach student to give their personal best. A: Actively Listen. This year we want to foster an environment where students and staff can feel heard. To do that, it is important that we learn the art and the value in actively listening. Our teachers will guide students in learning how to actively listen during instruction so they can be engaged in their learning. Additionally, through our Social Emotional Learning and Guidance lessons, students will also learn how to be an active listener in social settings, so that all perspectives and point of views are recognized.

O: Offer Kindness. A part of what makes it great to be a Gator is the way that students, parents, and staff care about each other. We have some of the most generous families in our Riverglades family. This year we want to give students many opportunities to demonstrate generosity and kindness to each other in school, as well as out in their community. We want our students to realize that being kind is a small thing that can make a big difference in someone else’s experience at school.

Last year we truly rallied together as we navigated through the changing tides of the pandemic to meet our students’ social, emotional, and academic needs. Our teachers and staff worked strategically to build learning opportunities that would address each student’s unfinished learning resulting in amazing academic growth in our student achievement levels. Our fabulous PTA provided our Coral Park families with many opportunities to come together for family and friend time in a fun and safe environment. Our staff and PTA are eager and ready to build upon these successes and positive trends this school year. We will continue to establish a foundation of kindness and build upon it by recognizing and accepting each other’s uniqueness, abilities, and individuality.
