Dear Readers,

Happy 2023! I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday and your 2023 is off to a good start. Hopefully, you had the opportunity to attend some of the city’s holiday events. They always put on spectacular events. Make sure to check out our Events Page so you know what is happening in Pembroke Pines for February-April. You won’t want to miss the Egg Hunt, Kindness Day, Pines Night Out, and so many more!

Have you made any New Year’s resolutions? Are you sticking to them? Most people usually want to lose weight and get healthy. If that is one of your goals, check out our Health Section, where you’ll find a bevy of places for health and fitness.

As this is our February-April issue, you will see we have added a CAMP SECTION because it is our Spring Break & Preview to Summer Camp issue. You want to start thinking about Summer Camps early because they all get booked up fast. Camps are a great experience for children of all ages. There are many benefits to sending your child to camp. There are tons of activities each day, and they spend plenty of time outdoors with other children. Camp is also shown to promote many developmental skills and increase independence. Plus, for parents who work, it is the best option. Once you look at our Camp Section you will see there are many camps to choose from including sports, art, and chess. There’s something for everyone. Hopefully, you will find one perfectly suited for your child. When you sign up for a camp, please don’t forget to tell them you saw their ad in the Sports & Activities Directory. Now that Spring is upon us and the cooler weather is here, try to do more fun stuff outdoors with your family. My new thing for 2023 is to do more and not just work. Life is too short, and we need to enjoy it!

My best to you,

Dear Readers,

It is always very exciting to start a new year with hope, resolutions and the knowledge that changes are inevitable but can also be exhilarating. We have many events, activities and programs planned throughout our city for 2023 for residents of all ages. Please be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Next Door and on our website at www.ppines.com for all the information you’ll need regarding activities, programs, and what’s happening in the city.

The City of Pembroke Pines has initiated a project for the replacement of aging residential water meters, 20-years old or older, throughout the City. This program is necessary to ensure continued accurate billing for all Utility customers. The new water meter will be equipped for mobile drive-by reading, eliminating manual entry of your monthly meter reading and will contain components to capture consumption usage on an hourly/daily basis and in graph format. This information, when requested, can help residents better understand monthly water usage habits or to determine if there is a leak. RTS Water Solutions, LLC/Envocore will perform this work. Be sure to watch for your water meter notification -- If you are a part of this program, you will receive two Door Hanger notifications. The contractor will place the 1st Door Hanger Notification (a white door hanger) on your front door within 2 weeks prior to when the work will start. The contractor will then place a second Door Hanger Notification (a white door hanger) on your front door once your water meter has been replaced. For more information or if there are questions, please contact the City of Pembroke Pines Utilities Department at 954-518-9000.

Many residents have also reached out to me on how to dispose of Household Hazardous Waste. Clean Harbors Environmental Services provides quarterly household hazardous waste drop off events for Pembroke Pines residents. The drop off events are held at the City’s wastewater treatment plant located at 13975 Pembroke Road. The hours of operation are 8 am to 2 pm. The 2023 scheduled dates are: March 4, 2023, June 3, 2023, September 9, 2023, and December 9, 2023.

Residents must bring proof of Pembroke Pines residency to use the drop off services. For a more complete list of acceptable and unacceptable items, please visit www.ppines.com of if you have a question, call 954-518-9000.

Another quick reminder - now through March 10, 2023, Florida residents are invited to enroll their child(ren) into the 2023-2024 school year lottery for the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School System (PPCSS). For more info, please go to www.pinescharter.net.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com. Wishing you all a great, safe and prosperous new year!

From your Mayor,

Pembroke Pines Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 73 | FebruaryApril 2023 16 EVENTS

The Weston Warriors Youth Tackle Football and Cheerleading Program was founded in 1995 as a pioneer member of the American Youth Football League, (AYFL). In 2017, we began a 5-year stint in Pop Warner. The Warriors joined the American Alliance Youth Football, (AAYF) in 2023, as a founding member, along with other AYFL pioneer members in order to return to our core values of keeping the children’s best interests first. The AAYF is the South Florida chapter of North West Florida Youth Sports Association (NWFYSA).

The main goal of Weston Warriors is to develop character and confidence in children through competition in Football, Cheerleading & Track by fostering life lessons which are inherent in these sports. We also place a high emphasis on academic performance and community involvement.

Some of the many benefits of joining the Weston Warriors within the American Alliance Youth Football League are the following:

• The opportunity to compete against the best in the nation. Local Champions advance to State / Regional competitions & those that qualify can pursue a National Championship.

• Fun, Fun, Fun! – The #1 reason kids play sports.

• Creating memories and friendships that last a lifetime.

• Safety, Safety First! - Highly qualified coaching teaching proper techniques which reduces the risk & reality of injuries.

• Coaching Education Programs & extensive background checks required for all coaches & staff.

• Developing well rounded athletes that promote self-esteem, inclusivity, and diversity.

• More than just Athletes - We require all of our participants to perform

adequately in school before allowing them to play.

• Family Atmosphere! – Join family & friends for great fun at Warriors’ events and volunteer opportunities throughout the year such as Pep Rallies, Homecoming events, and community parades to name a few.

Off season conditioning is included for registered Football players and Cheerleaders which begins in May. Regular season practices start in summer. We offer a summer football camp to help players build on their skills. Football games run from mid-August to October with playoffs for qualifying teams into November. National competitions are early December. Cheerleaders will cheer at games and will compete in local competition towards the end of the football season; qualifying Cheer teams may advance to Regional and National competitions. Practices average 3-4 evenings per week according to age/coach. Teams fill quickly, early registration is encouraged.

Great things are happening here at Silver Palms Elementary where KINDNESS IS OUR CULTURE! Our halls are all a buzz with cheer and excitement for learning and building meaningful lifelong relationships!

Even with the hustle and bustle of the holidays and the beginning of the new year, our students and teachers are engaged in instruction that is based on Florida’s Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking or B.E.S.T. Standards. When we visited a third-grade classroom, we saw children reading a variety of non-fiction books. They were sitting in groups with a Venn-Diagram, analyzing the text while engaging in rich conversations about the text features and how those text features help them better understand the text. “I think this is a caption,” proposed one student. Another student agreed but asked, “How does it help us understand the text?” The third student in the group chimed in, “Because it tells us more about the government and tells us about the picture!”

In addition to rich content-based conversations, it is evident that our efforts to teach our children to be kind and respectful helps to create an environment where children thrive! In yet another classroom a nine-year old girl says, “I don’t know how I got a 32!?” when she learns the correct answer to the math problem did not match her own. Her teacher encourages students to have a growth mindset. The kind culture encouraged and fostered at Silver Palms supports the belief that teaching children to have a growth mindset substantially impacts their ability to succeed, but what does it mean to have a growth mindset? According to Carol Dweck, “[those] who believe their talents can be developed through hard work, good strategies, and input from others have a growth mindset” (Dweck). Our teachers are always on the hunt for knowledge and research-based strategies that help to improve our students’ academic success. As a result, our educators stay on the cutting edge of research which further shows that those with a growth mindset “tend to achieve more than those with a fixed mindset (those who believe their talents are innate gifts)” (Dweck).

Furthermore, sharing the joy of the holidays and staying fit helps us address the needs of the “whole child”. Mrs. Linero, our brilliant Music Teacher, and her elves, Mrs. Kavanaugh and Ms. Allen led our Silver Palms Singers in a remarkable Winter Concert that brought many to joyful tears and filled our hearts with the spirit of the season! They told a story of joy, gratitude, and giving while signing beautifully! How wonderful it was to have our families fill our Dolphin Café with applause, smiles, and pride once again. In addition, Coach Brodey, set up a field of fun for our students so they could learn the importance of staying active without even realizing they were learning the importance of physical fitness! Some of our teachers and administrators got in on the fun as they ran the obstacle course while students and parents cheered!

We welcome you to come join the Silver Palms family and let your Dolphin pride shine! Principal Shearer welcomes all to join our Kindness Crew where we are proud to be an “A” school! 1209 NW 155th Avenue, Pembroke Pines 33028. (754) 323-7450.

Pembroke Pines Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 73 | FebruaryApril 2023 43 SCHOOLS

School is a journey that is different for each student. All parents understand that it’s important for their children to keep up in the classroom, but it’s also important that students each learn at their own pace.

Why? Students who are given the time and support to fully understand concepts as they move throughout a subject are less likely to have gaps in their knowledge that will come back to haunt them later on. At Huntington, we refer to this as skill mastery, but it’s a well-known concept in the world of education.

Mastery of skills is essential for deeper learning. Students who are encouraged to master knowledge before moving on to the next concept are inherently taught to persevere and approach learning with a growth (rather than fixed) mindset. They also build their confidence in the process.

The challenge: skill mastery requires individualized instruction

In concept, skill mastery makes a lot of sense. But in a classroom of 20 or more students, teachers are not always able to personalize instruction and give each student the attention they need when a concept or unit doesn’t click for them. Many students will keep up with the teacher as they teach to the entire class. But there will always be some students who struggle to do so and miss important knowledge that is required to understand subsequent topics.

When this happens, those students might perform poorly on homework and tests, but the class continues onward. Often, these students must simply carry on and do their best to continue grasping the successive lessons. But as school advances from elementary to middle and high school and classes become harder, small skill gaps can easily become bigger and bigger.

Taking a time out to catch up

If you notice your child—no matter their age—struggling with things like…

• Low grades or inconsistent grades (e.g., poor grades on some homework, mediocre

grades on other homework, often in the same subject)

• Lack of confidence

• Diminished self-esteem

• Poor time management due to getting stuck on certain homework

…it’s important to address the problem. No two students learn exactly alike or at the exact same pace, which makes 100% mastery of skills with 100% of students very difficult to achieve in any classroom.

Your child needs help bridging the gap between what they need to know in one or more subjects and what they actually know. If those gaps are left uncorrected, the problems will continue to grow.

Skill mastery is important

Students who master topics before moving on to new ones are shown to have higher levels of achievement in school, greater confidence, better comprehension and long-term retention, and a greater commitment to lifelong learning, among many other benefits. If you want to help your child catch up their skills, call Huntington at 1-800 CAN LEARN. We’ll perform an academic evaluation on your child’s abilities, identify what skills your child still needs to master and develop a customized program of instruction to get them there. Let’s help your student master knowledge and finish the school year strong!
