What started as a project to help boost awareness of every activity sport and program in Weston, turned it into a full-blown publishing business with five area magazines in Broward County. We are run by a group of moms who know how valuable this publication is to our families. We do this because we love it and because we make a difference in our communities. We do this for you…our readers! It’s been quite a rewarding journey with many important team members along the way who helped us grow, mature and hone our variety of professional skills to make the Sports and Activities Directory successful. As we look back on the struggles, the juggles and the chaos of publishing deadlines over the last 20 years, we are very proud of how we stayed the course to maintain our unique identity and become the only single source for recreational sports, activities, schools, and family event information in the cities where we publish. We work honestly and ethically to ensure that the people we do business with, along with our readers, can trust that we do what we say. We attribute our growth to the outstanding relationships we have built in the communities and by simply doing the right thing consistently. We have a genuine commitment to all of our clients’ successes. The goal has always been to create a highquality, useful publication for our readers. Combine that with a well-established, targeted readership, and our long-term advertisers reap a vast return on their advertising dollars with Sports and Activities Directory. Thank you to every team member past and present who took a leap of faith without a salary and trusted that success would come. I have been with the Sports & Activities Directory since the 2nd issue published and what a whirlwind affair it has been! It was love at first sight when I first got a hold of this publication in 2002 and I cannot believe how much I have loved this career! Our creative director, Jen Gowen, as been with us over 18 years and is instrumental in our unique look, professional ad design, and is responsible for every perfect page, cover and opener we have done! Our Territory Manager Linda Lombardi has been the driving force of advertising sales and client relationships for over 15 years! Our Publisher Kim Kadel has licensed two areas and now focuses solely on Coral Springs & Parkland. Anina Venuti publishes in Plantation and Isabel Magette publishes in Weston. Team members Carolyn Lass and Erika Denis contribute with territory development and advertising sales as well. I am so proud of all the sacrifices made and hard work this team contributes every issue. It has been our true joy to have been able to get back over $100,000 in sponsorships and donations, as well as over $3 million in pro bono advertising to date for not for profit organizations, city run programs and events, optimist clubs, schools, and youth sports teams. We hope we have been and will continue to be a source of inspiration to start a new sport or hobby, a resource to find fun things to do with the families, a lifesaver because of the important health and safety programs, a successful medium for our advertisers, and a keepsake for your family because your child made the cover or was featured in our magazine for doing some thing extraordinary. Thank you, thank you, thank you for 20 amazing years of to you, Margot Inc. City/SW

Dear Readers, School is in session and that means school buses are back out on the roads. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the greatest risk to any child is not riding a bus, but rather approaching or leaving one. It’s important for everyone to know the traffic safety rules near bus stops, as well as near buses on the road. A few notes to remember: Children should never walk behind a school bus when approaching at a bus stop. And, parents are encouraged to visit the bus stop and show the child where to wait safely for the bus which is at least six feet (or three giant steps) away from the curb. The bus stop is not a place to run or play. If driving behind a bus, allow a greater following distance than if driving behind a car. It will allow more time to stop once the red lights flash and the STOP arm is extended. The area 10 feet around a school bus is reportedly the most dangerous for children so it’s important for drivers to stop far enough back to allow them space to safely enter and exit the bus. Back to school means sharing the road with school buses, more parents taking children to and from school and even children on bikes. Please be aware of entering school zones, slow down near bus stops, be aware of children in the area, and follow bus safety rules to ensure a safe school year. Although the summer is starting to wind down, I hope everyone had a chance to take some time to relax a bit and enjoy all the amenities the City of Pembroke Pines has to offer. Please visit the Recreation & Cultural Arts web page at www.ppines.com, check our calendars, and visit our Facebook page at www.facebook/cityofpembrokepines for exciting events and programs that are planned for the coming months. Be sure to also check out the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center’s many monthly Social Service programs, created to enhance the wellbeing of seniors by providing assistance and facilitating services to them while maintain an independent lifestyle. Currents groups are Aging Healthy and Living Independently, Current Trends in Caregiving and Personal Enrichment Group. For more information, please call the Center at 954-450-6888. Lastly, we are still in hurricane season and are quickly approaching our most active time of the year. I hope everyone has their hurricane plans in place and are taking steps to prepare. This also includes pruning trees and landscaping now before a storm is on our door step. Please visit our hurricane preparedness information at www.ppines.com/hurricane to help you in your preparations. There are helpful tips, informational videos, resources etc. covering every aspect of making sure we are storm safe. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com.

Camp Lingua was established in 2000. It began as English lessons for those whotraveled to South Florida for the summer and wanted to learn English themselves at Lingua Language Center, but needed their children to do something while they were in class. We quickly realized how important it was for South Floridians to learn Spanish and for those who came from Spanish speaking households to practice the language and immerse in it.The following year, we decided to add Spanish for kids living in south Floridathrough fun and exciting camp activities, as well as daily language classes. Now, we have expanded to teach French. Campers participate in a variety of camp activities including languages, which openso many doors for their future. Parents love it, yet having fun and creating lifelongmemories is important to our campers. That is why we have successfully created the perfect balance between happy camper and happy parents! Camp Lingua is located at our beautiful 5-acre ranch in the heart of Southwest Ranches. A picturesque ranch nestled between Weston, Davie and Pembroke Pines. Our campers get to experience the true camp experience of a sleepaway camp, without having tosleep away from home. Not only do campers experience all kinds of sports, arts, barn and animal care, horseback riding, fishing, canoeing, archery, paintball, zip line and more, but they also get to engage and build independence, social, team, and leadershipskills from ages 5 to 15. Making friends is an extremely important part of camp, andfriendships made at Camp Lingua are sure to last! Friends meet up year after year at camp.We are open year-round, Thanksgiving break, winter and spring. Camps are offered all yeareven on days when there is no school for teacher planning or holidays. Night camp opens twicea year; Halloween and in April for fun-themed night camp activities. Give us a call to sign up!Aside from camps, we now offer horseback riding lessons each afternoon during the school year and Saturday mornings. Our riders participate in local horse shows and are welcome to attend Saturday camp where riders build a connection with horses and animals. An after-school tutoring program is available for those busy working parents whoneed their kids to be picked up safely from school and brought to our campus forhomework help, to study for upcoming tests and quizzes, work on school projects and/ or receive one-on-one tutoring to catch up on any given school-subject.

It may be hard to hear your child declare their dislike of reading, but there is a reason for it—probably several, in fact. Children who are lacking some of the reading building blocks that are essential for reading fluency and comprehension might find the entire process frustrating and avoid it altogether. What can you do? Make sure your child has the basics down, then help them rediscover reading as an enjoyable pastime. Here are several tips: Read together and pay attention. You might not be an expert in reading instruction, but if you observe your child’s reading, you will pick up what they do well and where they have difficulty. Listen for how they sound out words and word sounds (phonics) and whether they recognize sight words that don’t sound like they are spelled (for example, the). Take note of whether your child recognizes patterns and letter behaviors and decodes words to break down longer words into smaller words. Let your child choose their own reading material. Whatever type of reading material piques your child’s interest, go with it. The more your child picks their own books, the more interested in it they will be. Don’t rule out magazines, comic books, articles, riddles and other forms of reading. Go to the library often and let your child wander. Get the help of the librarian too—they are very familiar with how to engage reluctant readers with the right type of books and other material. Sometimes, it takes finding the right books to engage your child in reading. Try to make reading fun. It’s hard to do when your child has lost interest in reading, but do your best to encourage your child to read and make reading fun. For younger children, try matching words and pictures to work on vocabulary. Play word Bingo and other word games. Read fun and interesting books as a family with hot chocolate or lemonade after dinner a few nights a week. And as much as possible, let your child see you reading and talking about what you read with enthusiasm. Don’t push too hard. To the struggling student, reading feels daunting and stressful. Try to ease your child’s mind a bit by setting small goals—15 minutes a day for starters. Every day that your child reads, encourage them to try reading on their own first. If they get stuck on a word or section, they can always come to you with questions. Establish the habit, but don’t force reading. If there’s a problem, it needs to be addressed before your child will ever embrace reading by choice. When all else fails, read to your child. This might not work with older children, but if your younger child resists reading, read to them instead. Developing that listening comprehension and understanding of language is important. Plus, reading aloud will introduce your child to the joy of getting lost in a good story. Do this as much as you can while your child is still developing their own reading skills.
