OnSunday, March 5, 2023, the 8th annual Weston World Fest will be held in Weston Regional Park from 12:00noon-4:00pm. This annual cultural event is put on by the Arts Council of Greater Weston in partnership with the City of Weston. Last year’s event attracted over 5,000 attendees, so mark your calendars now – you won’t want to miss this one.

Carol Lema, creator and director of the festival, announced, “The theme for this year is Animals of the Planet, highlighting native wildlife of the air, land and sea around the globe. All 20 international country booths as well as the Theme Village area will feature the event theme. Due to park rules, of course, there will be no live exhibits, but rather plenty of visual displays and information.”

There will be interactive activities for children and educational displays for adults. A passport program for children elementary through middle school age who complete the journey will give them access to additional activity stations. The Arts Council asks attendees to be sure and check in at the front gate to receive the festival event program as well as kids’ passports.

New for 2023 is an expanded restaurant and dining section, following unprecedented attendance and demand in 2022. Expect to taste both sweet and savory specialties from such

countries as Lebanon, Greece, Italy, Spain, Singapore and Turkey along with beverages such as bubble tea and U.S. coffee concoctions.

Onstage you can enjoy international artists bringing instrumentals, dance and drum performances throughout the day. Attendees can look forward to the return of Ronin Taiko, an acclaimed Japanese taiko drum ensemble which has wowed past audiences, as well as new acts such as the Paraguayan bottle dance.

The ACGW is excited to announce that they are taking part in a national survey at the event which helps assess the economic impact of arts and culture in our community. The survey is being completed in partnership with the Broward Cultural Division and the City of Fort Lauderdale. Surveys will be available at the Arts Council check-in booth the day of the event.

Annalisa Walker, Special Events Manager for the City of Weston, says, “We urge everyone to take a few minutes and participate in this survey. We want to ensure events like this return year after year and show the need for additional outreach to our diverse, thriving community”.

Dear Weston Residents,

A GLORIOUS AND ACTIVE TIME OF YEAR.

Glorious weather is bountiful in south Florida right now and with great weather comes an abundant array of sports and activities.

As a parent to two (now grown) daughters who were active in sports, I understand very well the hurdles that are traversed each day by busy parents to get their children to and from sports and activities within park systems. I believe this is one of the reasons why Weston’s parents are so appreciative of the parks within our City. The vast amount of time they spend at them, particularly at this time of year, is so pleasant. The fields are beautifully maintained, the restrooms are modern and clean, and facilities and equipment are well-kept. A park experience in Weston brings the blood pressure down, not up, providing an enjoyable experience for both parent and child. This is not by accident - this is by design; and it is the way we intend to keep it or make it better.

I want to thank everyone who participated in the surveys on the Weston Parks & Recreation Masterplan. The results of the survey are tentatively scheduled to be presented at the Weston City Commission Meeting on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at 7:00PM. We encourage you to attend or watch online. For more information on the Parks & Recreation Master Plan process please visit WestonFL.org/Parks and click on the Master Plan Icon.

From February through April, Weston has a wealth of events and programs for residents and visitors alike to enjoy. The City, in conjunction with the Arts Council of Greater Weston, offers these fun-filled events for families and individuals of every age. Coming up are: monthly Moonlight Movies in the Park, magician and puppet shows at the Weston Community Center for children, free outdoor Symphony Concert in the park, a Foreign Film Series, the free WestonNights Outdoor Concert series, BSO Shred-A-Thon, BSO Meet Your Match, Community CPR Day, Weston World Fest, the Royal Egg Hunt, and Earth Day – The Weston Way. Please look for details of these and other events on our website at WestonFL.org/Events.

Lastly, I encourage you to view Weston’s “POP” tips during the month of April in recognition of Earth Day. “POP” stands for Protect Our Planet and the tips provide simple and fun ideas for conservation. Earth Day will be celebrated on Saturday, April 22, 2023, in Weston with an event called Earth Day, The Weston Way. Come visit us in Library Park between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to support earthfriendly environmental efforts. This family-friendly event will feature educational booths, hands-on activities, arts and crafts, a live chalk artist, and a DJ with music and giveaways. Learn about the City’s Community Wildlife Habitat designation through the National Wildlife Federation, and how residents can register their own gardens or yards, too.

Subscribe to our Newsday Tuesday eNewsletter to receive the POP tips in your inbox and follow us on Twitter @CityofWeston, Instagram @CityofWestonFL, and Facebook @CityofWestonFL.

We hope that you enjoy the upcoming Passover and Easter holidays and for students looking forward to Spring Break, both here and those away at college, be safe and have fun.

Sincerely,

Weston Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 75 | FebruaryApril 2023 10

W ho knows how a violin creates its beautiful sound, or how a bassoon is able to create its unforgettable tone! Bringing music into schools through scholarships and concerts is the most important thing for Weston Music Society (WMS).

This 2022/23 school year, WMS brought amazing, free, educational concerts to four Weston elementary schools with our In-School Music Program, giving the students an opportunity to learn and experience new instruments and exciting sounds.

WMS, with the woodwind quartet from the Symphony of the Americas, gave Everglades Elementary, Manatee Bay, Country Isles and Gator Run the opportunity to attend a concert this past fall, and to learn some amazing new things. Children were able to ask questions and see for themselves how an oboe creates its playful sound, and how the clarinet can jam out to modern music.

Not only does WMS understand how important music is for schools through concerts and scholarships, but WMS also gives the whole community the opportunity to experience music.

WMS hosted the Second Annual Dance Party with Olaf on December 3, 2022. “Our Dance Fever Dance Party is a family fun event in Weston Town Center. It is a new event, and it is magical to witness people of all ages dancing the evening away,” said Gina Catone, WMS president.

Every May, WMS offers more than ten high schoolers from the City of Weston a scholarship to pursue music. “The Matching Scholarship Program highlights the generosity of our fellow Weston residents. Eighty percent of the sponsors are Weston residents. We have thirteen scholarships which we will be awarding in May,” noted Gina Catone. We are always looking for like-minded Board Members and new members to continue our mission of bringing music to the community in Weston. We offer opportunities for our members and Board Members to get involved, be part of the community, and give back through something we all love: music.

Working closely with the City of Weston, WMS has offered many concerts throughout the years. Last April, WMS, the City of Weston, and South Florida Symphony presented a splendid outdoor concert offering a wide variety of music which completely delighted our community. Gina Catone said, “South Florida Symphony amazed the audience with vocalists and musicians providing a vast selection of musical entertainment. WMS is looking forward to its April 1st performance in Weston Town Center.”

Please look out for us at upcoming events and feel free to come up and say “Hello”! We would love for you to become a member, a Board Member, or just enjoy the music! For more information visit: www.westonmusicsociety.org

Weston Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 75 | FebruaryApril 2023 23 EVENTS

The Weston Warriors Youth Tackle Football and Cheerleading Program was founded in 1995 as a pioneer member of the American Youth Football League, (AYFL). In 2017, we began a 5-year stint in Pop Warner. The Warriors joined the American Alliance Youth Football, (AAYF) in 2023, as a founding member, along with other AYFL pioneer members in order to return to our core values of keeping the children’s best interests first. The AAYF is the South Florida chapter of North West Florida Youth Sports Association (NWFYSA).

The main goal of Weston Warriors is to develop character and confidence in children through competition in Football, Cheerleading & Track by fostering life lessons which are inherent in these sports. We also place a high emphasis on academic performance and community involvement.

Some of the many benefits of joining the Weston Warriors within the American Alliance Youth Football League are the following:

• The opportunity to compete against the best in the nation. Local Champions advance to State / Regional competitions & those that qualify can pursue a National Championship.

• Fun, Fun, Fun! – The #1 reason kids play sports.

• Creating memories and friendships that last a lifetime.

• Safety, Safety First! - Highly qualified coaching teaching proper techniques which reduces the risk & reality of injuries.

• Coaching Education Programs & extensive background checks required for all coaches & staff.

• Developing well rounded athletes that promote self-esteem, inclusivity, and diversity.

• More than just Athletes - We require all of our participants to perform

adequately in school before allowing them to play.

• Family Atmosphere! – Join family & friends for great fun at Warriors’ events and volunteer opportunities throughout the year such as Pep Rallies, Homecoming events, and community parades to name a few.

Off season conditioning is included for registered Football players and Cheerleaders which begins in May. Regular season practices start in summer. We offer a summer football camp to help players build on their skills. Football games run from mid-August to October with playoffs for qualifying teams into November. National competitions are early December. 2022 season was another successful season for the Weston Warriors Cheerleading program despite it being a rebuilding year. Under the guidance of Cheer Director, Patricia Fortoul, with the outstanding work and dedication of all 1st time coaches and mostly all 1st year cheerleaders, the Division 8U team won the local Championship in their division and the 6U & 12U teams placed 2nd. These placements helped the program score highest in all divisions being named Overall Champions, a first-time achievement.

Our 8U & 12U Cheer squads qualified for regional competition under American Youth Football & Cheer where both teams also placed 2nd, advancing them to the AYC National Championships in Orlando, Florida. The achievements do not compare to the girl’s development and life experience gained from the discipline & hard work necessary to accomplish much more than was expected of them. In addition, the Warriors program promotes a strong family atmosphere which facilitates its value of good sportsmanship & character building.

In similar fashion, our 10U Black Football Team was made up of about 75% first year tackle football players. With outstanding coaching, these players developed the confidence at an alarming rate, which allowed them to ultimately exceed expectations.

After a difficult set back in the last week of the regular season, losing to the arch-rival Boca Braves 26-6, the team was able to redeem themselves in the Championship with an exciting 14-13 win over those same Boca Braves, a team that the Warriors have not been able to surpass in the prior 5 seasons. It was a sweet joy! The combination of great teaching by the Coaches along with the dedication, teamwork, accountability, and commitment of players, not giving in after a loss, allowed them to be successful.

Both the Division 8U Cheerleaders and 10U Black Football teams were recognized on January 17th at the City of Weston’s monthly Commission meeting for their accomplishments. We are proud of our athletes. Let’s GO Warriors!

TUTORING SERVICES

KUMON MATH AND READING CENTER

Weston-Saddle Club Road. Kumon is the best learning program ever developed, and very different from your child’s regular school experience because of 4 pillars that guide us with each student: 1. individually designed learning; 2. learning challenges that advance exactly in line with your student’s timing; 3. learning by doing, not listening; 4. instructors who support, students who think. Consider how different these pillars are from the passive experience your child has in a class of 30 students. Your child’s special gifts and talents, and even your child’s individual needs, can get lost in a class of 30. But not at Kumon!! That’s why Kumon is cherished in almost 60 countries. And why it consistently generates accelerated learning for students from any starting point, to beyond class-level! The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. Please stop by and visit us! Schedule a free, no-obligation evaluation. Weston Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 75 | FebruaryApril 2023 46 SCHOOLS

This school year, Gator Run Elementary hosted its first ever Spanish Spelling Bee! This exciting new opportunity was presented to the third, fourth, and fifth grade Dual Language students and Spanish-speaking ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) students.

A couple of weeks prior to the bee, students were given a written spelling test in Spanish and based on those scores, students who qualified from each grade level were chosen to participate in the spelling bee. The spelling bee followed the format of the National Spanish Spelling Bee and was held on the morning of December 16th in our school cafeteria. The participants gathered on the stage, sitting on a chair with their designated number that would indicate when their turn would be each round. Participants sat in front of a bee-themed backdrop on the stage and while you could feel the nerves, there was a sense of anticipation and excitement. The audience was filled with the third, fourth, and fifth dual language classes and the classmates of the ESOL students who had qualified. The bee began with remarks from our Principal, Mr. Peters, then the rules and procedures of the bee were explained, and finally it was time to begin the first round!

There was a quietness enveloping throughout the cafeteria as the first participant walked to the microphone and began spelling the provided word. Each student walked up to the microphone when it was their turn; repeated the word, spelled it, and stated the word again. At the end of each round, any participant that had incorrectly spelled their assigned word were given a participation certificate and a bee keychain. Those students were then seated in the audience for the remainder of the spelling bee. After several rounds, the top three participants battled word after word to claim their spot. The first-place winner was a student in fourth grade, the second-place winner was a student in fifth grade, and the third-place winner was a student in third grade! The top three winners received a trophy to congratulate them on their achievement.

Gator Run Elementary is extremely proud of all the participating students for having the courage to stand in front of the audience and take part in our first ever Spanish Spelling Bee! While it was the first Spanish Spelling Bee our school has hosted, this will now become a yearly event at Gator Run Elementary. This event provides an opportunity for our students who are in the dual language program and our native Spanish speakers in general education classes to embrace the idiosyncrasies of the Spanish language. It also encourages students to engage with the Spanish language in a unique way. We truly look forward to next year’s Spanish Spelling Bee.

After a 3-year hiatus, Eagle Point Elementary Foundation’s Annual Superhero Mom & Son event was brought back in full swing. “We are very excited to bring this event back,” says President Sophia LoMonaco, “it’s a staple event for our school and a well-deserved bonding experience for Eagle Point boys and their moms or that special female role model in their life.”

The school cafeteria is transformed into 30 minute-to-win-it type stations where Moms and Sons complete games or activities such as Iceman’s Straw Hockey, Kryptonite Disposal Race, Raven’s Trivia, Wonder Women’s Bracelet, and more. To top it off, the moms and sons could dress to the superhero theme and capture the moment at the picture station and the professional photo booth.

“Boys love activities and this event provides a way for them to stay engaged, entertained and work in collaboration with their moms while they play and compete against other mom-son teams, it is a super fun time,” says LoMonaco.

Superhero Mom & Son Fun Night was a huge success with over 400 moms and sons in attendance. “There were lots of laughs, excitement, and all-around fun! Boys were high-fiving their moms when they scored or won an activity or event,” says Mia Quintana, mom and Foundation board member of Arturo, a first grader, and Esteban, a fifth grader.

Foundation’s mission is to raise funds and support the school by hosting fun, familyoriented events that bring the school community together. Hosting this event is possible with the help of over 75 volunteers from middle and high school, most of which are Eagle Point Elementary alumni, as well as parents and staff,” explains LoMonaco. Not only was this event a fun experience, but it also raised over $5,000 in funds to provide support to the school with upcoming enhancements to the school’s playground.

Congratulations to the Falcon Cove Boys Cross-Country Team for winning the school’s very FIRST Cross-Country County Championship! The boys won the Broward County Cross-Country CHAMPIONSHIP on Sept. 21st 2022 at Markham Park. In a thrilling and exciting race, the boys ran against 170 runners at the same time. Dmitrii Berenin finished 2nd overall. It was an incredible race for these young men. The team lead by Dmitrii Berenin consisted of Alejandro Gonzalez, Carlos Infante Espiga, Jacob Drysdale, Justin Xia, Iam Marchany, and Daniel Chaussky. These runners were on a mission and would not be denied. They worked so hard everyday is practice, drove each other to run their best, and were a great support to each other. Cross-country is such a tough sport. Coach Hoopes, who is in her second-year coaching cross-country for the school is so proud of them. Coach Hoopes,” There were only 2 returning runners from last year, in which the boys placed second overall in the Championship. These young men really believed in each other and got better and better every day. They’re hard-work, determination, and willingness to give their all helped them win the schools first cross-country championship! What an incredible group of young men. It is such an honor to know these young men and an even bigger honor to have been able to coach them to help them reach their goal of winning a championship. They’re the definition of a true CHAMPION!”

FALCON COVE GIRLS CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP RUNNER UP

Congratulation to the Falcon Cove Girls’ Cross-Country Team For finishing second overall-County Championship Runner -Ups. This is the first Falcon Cove girls’ crosscountry team to be the County Champions Runner Ups (second place)! Last year the Lady Falcons team finished third overall. This season they didn’t have any returning runners from that team. This year’s team consisted of all 6th graders and one 7th

grader. They ran in the Broward County Cross-Country CHAMPIONSHIP on Sept. 21st, 2022, at Markham Park. The girls ran against over 153 runners at the same time. It is a daunting race, but they truly gave everything they had. They are an incredible group of student athletes! CrossCountry is the first sport of the year. These young ladies were brand new to the school, brand new to middle school sports, and brand new to the sport of cross-country. The team of Ella Johnston, Andrea Gonzalez, Valeria Colina Martinez, Carolina Carrera, Amalia Broderick, and our lone 7th grader Ana Infante Espiga worked hard day in and day out. Coach Hoopes,’ After the first practice I knew this young team would be able to contend for a championship. They are such a special group of young athletes with the determination to anything! They were up to the challenge. I look forward to seeing what they do in the next few years.” Congratulations Lady Falcons on an amazing season!
