As the school year winds down, we would like to thank all the teachers, volunteers, Principals, and staff for creating a wonderful, safe, and educational environment for our students. Their hard work is truly appreciated. We also want to congratulate all our All-Star students who made academic, service, musical, theatrical, language and athletic gains this year. T

he Children’s Services Council of Broward County wants to remind you - Don’t lose track of where your children are! Now more than ever, distractions can cause a tragedy in and around water. If you can’t find your child, check the water first! Remember the layers of protection: Install alarms on doors leading to water, place fencing around pools, learn CPR, and remember to always be Water Smart! Did you know drowning is the leading cause of injury and death of children ages 1 to 4 years old? The majority of children who drown in home pools were not expected to be in the water or even near the pool. Most children who drown in a home pool enter the water without the knowledge of their parent or caregiver. Children need capable, close and constant supervision, especially toddlers who may easily and quickly leave a safe, supervised area unnoticed. A dedicated “Water Watcher” can help save children from death or injury from drowning.

SIMPLE STEPS SAVES LIVES

The loss of a child is devastating to parents, siblings, grandparents, relatives and to a community. Drowning is almost always preventable by following these simple steps. Here are some guidelines to follow: 1. Parents need to talk to their child about water safety. “Don’t go near a pool without an adult.” This is the most important water safety conversation to have because it is so simple. 2. If you see someone struggling in the water, don’t jump in to help. Run and get an

adult. And if you fall into a pool, don’t panic. Turn around, find the wall and climb out or yell for help. 3. Practice this skill in the pool with your child. Have the child practice water safety by wearing clothing in the water to experience the feeling.

Drowning Is Quick AND Silent

• Drowning occurs in as little as 2 minutes. • Irreversible brain damage occurs in as little as 4 minutes. • Most children who drown are out of sight for less than 5 minutes and are usually accompanied by one or both parents whom are nearby. • Most children that die are submerged for as little as 6-10 minutes. For more information about water safety, please visit cscbroward.org/safeswim and watersmartbroward.org.

By Phil Kaplan with Dr. Kristin Comella, Biohackers, Weston

“O

ff my meds!”, “Down 13 pounds in 21 days!”, “I’m better than ever!”. These words echo through homes and communities of our guests and members, ecstatic with the life-altering excitation flowing through their bodies, lighting up every cell with the voltage of human excellence. Consider this. Your physical struggle is reversible, your disease is fixable, and weight loss resistance is simply a transmutable blockage you can eliminate with a simple Metabolic Reboot...At Biohackers. WHAT IS BIOHACKERS? We’re a 6,000 square foot wonderland where the worlds of medicine and wellness, fitness and regeneration, find a pinnacle of effectiveness. Our programs hasten the reversal of physical degeneration, biological aging, and chronic disease. In simple language, “we make people better.” What people? Moms, entrepreneurs, executives, athletes, salespeople, teachers, and in all likelihood more than 65% of the Weston Community. 65% of American adults have been “labeled” with a chronic disease. Nobody told them it was reversible. Until now. WHAT IS THE “HUMAN BETTERMENT SECRET?” The key to reigniting your best self lies in learning to access an innate power you’ve had all along. This “power” is the force that allows fractures to repair, tissue to regenerate, and wounds to become memories. It’s the lifeforce miracle that allows an inflamed toe or elbow to “return to normal.” Hippocrates was aware of nature’s human gift. As medicine evolved into a confusing maze of procedures,

treatments, and prescriptions, it moved away from its “healing” roots. The Power we release involves two key biological systems most Americans inadvertently neglect. Together they create homeostasis, a divine biological symphony stimulating stem cell activity, tissue repair, hormonal re-patterning, and reversal of inflammation (the root cause of chronic disease). My name is Phil Kaplan. I’ve been a fitness industry leader for decades with a long-time attachment to Weston (since 1989 when its residents were alligators). In 2019, with mastery of disease reversal through nutrition, mindset, and movement, I met Dr. Kristin Comella, world-renowned expert in Regenerative Medicine. The ground shook. We joined forces. Now, using age-old healing strategies, nutritional innovations, and breakthroughs in science, human regeneration, age-reversal, and Biohacking (you’ll see when you visit), we’ve stepped into a realm where people become better. It’s your turn. We’re on the cusp of national growth with aspirations to go global by 2025. Right now, we’re here, in Weston. Call or email to schedule a complimentary experience, allowing you to understand how to bring about remarkable results and to “feel better” in minutes. Your best life is in front of you. Claim your power. Call (954) 384-7225 or visit www.biohackersfitness.com. We are located at 2750 Glades Cir #500 Weston, FL 33327

id you know Weston collects 4,000 TONS of material from your blue bins every year? Did you know only 75% of material Weston residents put into blue recycling bins actually gets recycled? The rest consists of contaminated items mistakenly placed in there by residents, including plastic bags (even those holding eligible items), pizza boxes, and Styrofoam. Simply raising that to 80% would take an additional 200 tons of material from the landfill each year!

What can you do to help? •

• •

If you need it, order a FREE larger recycling bin. Standard issue recycling carts are 35-gallons. You can trade in your cart for a 64-gallon cart by contacting Republic Services at 954-583-1830. No plastic bags at all…they clog up the recycling machinery If you bag your recyclables, they are automatically thrown in the landfill. It’s too time consuming and also a safety hazard for the workers at the recycling facility to open those bags

No food scraps…including those remaining in containers; clean out anything which contained food • No pizza boxes with grease and oil residue or liners/ wax paper glued to the box • Not every piece of metal is recyclable…no pots, pans, metal utensils, or scrap metal • Stick to aluminum and soup-style cans only • Plastic “to go” containers and paper “to go” soda or coffee cups with wax or plastic coating and their plastic lids are not accepted • No window glass, light bulbs, mirrors, glass cookware or bake ware, or ceramics • To ensure for proper and efficient collection, the carts must be placed correctly – facing the street, at least 3 feet away from obstacles like another cart, mailboxes, fire hydrants, trees, etc. • This gives the mechanical arms room to pick up your bin • Otherwise, the driver has to stop, get out of the truck, create space for the mechanical arms, get back in the truck, and empty the bin • No household garbage or other waste such as gas cylinders, tanks, rocks, dirt, building debris, flammables, small appliances. • No toys, hoses, wires, holiday lights I know what you’re thinking. Chris, how am I supposed to remember all this?! Easy…print out the recycling guide at the City’s awesome website and tape it on the inside lid of your blue bin. And, check out other tips as well. www.westonfl.org/recycling But Chris, why can’t I just throw everything in the blue bin and let someone else figure it out? Take a look at this video and you’ll see why https://fb.watch/aJcNL0lGyv/ So, that’s it! Weston is one of the leading recycling city’s in the tri-county area. Just do your small part to help us grow from 75%-80% and keep more garbage out of our increasingly full landfills.

DWe ear Falcon Cove Family, are pleased to announce that our National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)

won BIG at the Broward County Honor Society Convention! We thank each and every one of you for your continued support of NJHS! Many of you have taught these amazing students and groomed them into young citizens who selflessly give back to their community. We are very excited that they won FIRST PLACE for their Domino’s Pizza Card Fundraiser which will be used to dedicate a Bibliotherapy Library at Joe Dimaggio’s Children’s Hospital (JDCH)! The ribbon-cutting ceremony happened on May 31st! It’s a project that JDCH has wanted for a long time and Falcon Cove is providing the books for them. We are also donating a portion of the money to continue supporting their Child Life Foundation. Our students won SECOND PLACE for Community Service for Cards & Cuddles project; making over 300 Holiday Cards and collecting over 50 teddy bears for JDCH patients and healthcare workers. We send a special THANKS to our Art 2 students and Peer Counselors for their help! For all of you who attended the Miami Heat NJHS Recognition Game, we won FIRST PLACE for Membership Motivation. It was an exciting game and an event to remember! Our creative members Pragnaya Gopisetti and Isabella Jimenez won SECOND PLACE for their Scrapbook capturing this year’s activities! We are so proud of them! In addition, our very own Maria Valentina Castellanos won MEMBER of the YEAR out of all middle school NJHS members! We are very proud of her and grateful for all that she does for NJHS and Falcon Cove. Lastly, our chapter was awarded the Bronze Medal for Chapter of Distinction which is another high honor across the district for the activities we completed during the second year of the pandemic. Despite the challenges our members faced, they were still able to make a positive impact on our community. We have inducted 103 new members into NJHS for next year and we can’t wait to see what they do! Kindest regards, Stella Copulos Stringer, M.S.Ed. 7th Grade Mathematics Teacher, NJHS Advisor

Student-powered innovation is the cornerstone of Sagemont’s educational philosophy, which is evident in our student-run cafe, Pride Rock. Pride Rock was established in 2018, and was an extension of the existing entrepreneurial coursework. Due to the success of these programs, The Sagemont School has made strategic enhancements to the curriculum for the 2022-2023 academic year. Next year, Sagemont’s elementary and middle school programs will include required coursework and exploration to include innovation and entrepreneurship. The fundamental characteristics and skills which are needed to be a successful entrepreneur and innovator are the same for being successful in life. Learning how to think and question are at the cornerstone of higher-order and critical thinking. Entrepreneurship and innovation infused curriculum instills self-confidence, problemsolving, creativity, goal setting, empathy, leadership, grit, and commitment. The Sagemont School is committed to developing this student population of innovators and is excited to announce the launch of the first ever Sagemont Innovation Scholarships for the upcoming school year. ntrepreneurs are risk-takers, curious, passionate, creative, collaborative and flexible. Entrepreneurs are problem finders who are driven to discover solutions. The Sagemont School empowers students to become entrepreneurs and embrace an innovative mindset. With a focus on real-world application, Sagemont students have the opportunity to create, design, build, discover, and collaborate, while developing connections between school and their community. One of the many time honored and beloved traditions of The Sagemont School is the annual Senior Market. Delivered within the context of a microeconomic course, all seniors form small business teams to create the Sagemont Marketplace. Students are tasked with developing a product or service, while documenting all aspects of the enterprise, including the creation of a business plan, strategic marketing, knowledge of supply and demand constraints and profit margins. This week-long competitive market concluded in early April, and served to inspire future generations of entrepreneurs, as lower school students also had the opportunity to visit the marketplace and are already brainstorming for their companies.

She loves that the children are learning phonemic awareness in a memorable way: “This is truly one of my favorite academic events. Ms. Reed goes through a great deal of effort to ensure that this is special, fun, important, and something the children will remember for the rest of their life.” After the ceremony, children partake in a wedding reception, complete with wedding cake and sparkling apple cider. Children’s recording artist, Jack Hartmann wrote the song “Best Friends Q and U” several years ago after learning about Ms. Reed’s special celebration. Each year, this song is played as the Wedding Song. The children then dance, sing, and celebrate to a variety of alphabet songs. This hour-long celebration ends with the children blowing wedding bubbles and receiving small party favors. As the guests begin to leave, chants of “BEST DAY EVER” can be heard from the Kindergarteners. Ms. Reed hopes that memories of what her students learned will stay with them as they progress through their schooling. The Manatee Bay Elementary School is Located at 19200 Manatee Isle Drive in Weston. Their principal is Heather Hedman-Devaughn. They can be reached at (754)323-6450.

W

hile Kindergarteners all over the country learn the alphabet, a few culminate the study with a unique event — The Wedding of Q and U! The wedding is a truly memorable way to teach young children the spelling pattern “qu”. This fancy event reinforces the idea that when Kindergarteners write a word with a “q”, the “q” is always followed with a “u”. Ms. Lisa Reed’s Kindergarten Class at Manatee Bay Elementary School celebrates the Wedding of Q and U each year. Just like an actual wedding, their Big Day consists of two parts — a wedding ceremony and a reception. Invitations are sent home to the student’s families inviting them to the event along with instructions on dress code. Children may wear fancy clothes or come dressed as QUartebacks or QUeens. Ms. Reed provides instruction to the students on wedding etiquette. Ms. Reed states that this is the first wedding that most of the children have attended. All the students participate in the ceremony and have the opportunity to walk down the aisle and carry bouquets of flowers if they wish. At the end of the ceremony, Q and U are pronounced “Letter Partners for Life.” Mrs. Heather DeVaughn, Manatee Bay’s principal, usually officiates the wedding.
