Love is in the air during the month of February! Although we still have some chilly and rainy weather, it’s always fun to see the beautiful heart sculptures around town and enjoy a fabulous meal at some of our favorite Danville restaurants. We are also lucky to have plenty of shops to grab a sweet treat to share with a loved one. February has some great events to look forward to, including a new art exhibit, and the Taste of the Tri-Valley!

On our cover this month, we are featuring the Petersen family. This active west side family is no stranger to Danville. You may have seen them around town, school or church, and this month you’ll be able to read all about what makes them love living and enjoying their life together in Danville. You’ll also have a chance to read some great expert articles and community content on what makes Danville such a wonderful place to call home. During this month of February, we can surely say...we LOVE where we live!

Remember, if you have a story to share or know a neighbor that you would love to see on our cover, please send me an email at aangstenberger@bestversionmedia.com. We welcome all families, couples, or individuals - the only requirement is that our feature family live on the west side of Danville. So send your friends and neighbors my way, I can’t wait to meet them!

See you around town!

Meet the Petersens: A Family Full of Life and Positivity

Danville native Jeff Petersen met Alison in Tahoe while she was skiing on her lunch break. Alison was no stranger to the slopes, as she was once a winner of a “Wakes and Gates” competition (an event that included both water skiing and snow skiing in the same day)…no wonder Jeff was impressed! In 2003 Jeff and Alison married in Henderson, Nevada, accompanied by a wedding party and many attendees that are current Danville residents. The newlyweds spent the next 7 days honeymooning in Puerto Nuevo, Mexico.

Alison grew up in warm and sunny San Diego. Many of her childhood memories include rooting on the San Diego Chargers and spending much of her free time being a stellar athlete in volleyball, basketball and softball. She later attended UC Santa Barbara and had the opportunity to play Division I softball at UCSB, as well. She later earned her Master’s Degree from University of Nevada, Reno while working for Coldwell Banker in Tahoe City. Currently, Alison is known around Danville as a partner with the Dudum Real Estate Group, selling real estate all over California….from Tahoe to San Diego. Anyone who knows her, understands her passion and drive for selling residential real estate for the past 28 years. Our west side native, Jeff, attended Montair Elementary, Charlotte Wood Middle School and San Ramon Valley High School. Later attending Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, Jeff played tight end for the Gaels and majored in History. Currently, Jeff works at One Digital, working with clients from multiple industries across the Bay Area as an Employee Benefits Consultant.

After Jeff and Alison married, the couple settled in their first home on Verona Ave. With a growing family, it was clear they needed a larger home, and although it was difficult to say goodbye to the home they brought all 4 children home from the hospital, the Petersens were blessed to find their forever home just down the street on Camino Amigo. You can likely find them playing sports, dancing and enjoying time together in one of their favorite parts of their home, their backyard. The Petersen family is an active bunch! With four children; Tyler (16), Victoria/Tori (14), Trevor (12) and Trey (7), you have probably run into them at sporting events, live music concerts or biking on the Iron Horse trail with their 2 furry family members, Roxy and James…both rescue dogs who have brought joy and happiness to the Petersen clan. You may have also seen the Petersens riding around town in their 6 seater golf cart. They were one of the first families on the west side to have a “street legal” golf cart. Alison was able to use it to easily drop off the kiddos at school at the Montair loop. A funny memory they have is one morning over the loudspeaker was a call for “someone to move their golf cart type vehicle” as it was blocking the Kindergarten pick up lane.

Their oldest son, Tyler, has always been a sports fanatic and uses that passion still today. He currently plays on the basketball and football teams for SRVHS (NCS Champions!). You may also find Tyler coaching youth flag

football and refereeing for CYO games. Some fun facts about Tyler, is that he has even spent his Easter Break building homes for needy families in Mexico, and he is a University of Miami super fan! Tori is the Petersen’s second born child. Even though she is the only girl with three brothers, she is a tough cookie and keeps up with the best of them! Currently, a straight A student at Stone Valley Middle School and a competitive dancer, she still finds time to get lost in her favorite pastime, reading. Tori is also an active member in the DVNCL (National Charity League) and volunteers at the Crayon Initiative.

Trevor, the Petersen’s 12-year-old son, is “funny, smart, athletic and talented.” He is a 6th grader at Charlotte Wood Middle School and also an athlete for Mustang Soccer and Lakeshow Basketball teams. When he’s not playing hoops, Trevor loves to play the guitar, surf, and create Lego masterpieces. Closing out the Peterson kiddos is 7-year-old Trey, a first grader at St. Isidore School. Fitting right in, Trey loves basketball, football, soccer and baseball. If you can’t find Trey, he is likely using his imagination or playing with his best friend, Roxy, the family dog.

The Petersen family loves vacationing down south in San Diego or spending time together sipping on hot chocolate and skiing near their family cabin in Tahoe City. As a “house divided,” they have quite the sports teams cheering section. The family are huge fans of the Raiders, Golden State Warriors, Oakland A’s and San Diego Padres. When Jeff is not watching his favorite professional teams, he is actively coaching his children’s soccer and football teams. The Danville Children’s Guild (a charitable organization which raises money for underprivileged children in Contra Costa County) also has a special place in the Petersen’s hearts. Alison has been a long time member of the DCG, and has even convinced Jeff to model with her in the annual Fall Luncheon fashion show for the past 10 years. It is not lost on the Petersens that they are lucky to have the ability to dedicate time to philanthropic endeavors. Alison says “reward for my time and work is knowing that someone who will never know my name is benefiting.” She even mentioned a quote found in her

8 FEBRUARY 2023 Resident Feature

church bulletin that spoke to this very sentiment… .“To labor and to not ask for a reward” is a reminder of why she dedicates her time. Additionally, Alison also enjoys working on her golf game on the Diablo Women’s Golf Group for Diablo Country Club and throughout the week, the entire family can be seen together splitting their time between church services and activities at both St. Isidore Catholic Church and Community Presbyterian Church.

When reflecting on their life in Danville, the Petersens are quick to point out how blessed they are to live in such close proximity to amazing schools, churches, athletic clubs, shopping and neighbors. As busy as their schedule is, the Petersens make it a priority to enjoy the town they live in, especially their family, friends and neighbors who make up this wonderful west side community. The family tries to live life with an open mind and a ready-to-go mentality. These are important traits in a family that is constantly on the move! Jeff and Alison are so proud of their children and make an effort to teach them to face life with a positive attitude. Alison states, “If you are going to have an attitude, make it a positive one.” I think we can all agree that is good advice!

How Chiropractic Care Helps Improve Posture

Now Open

Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays

Reserved Tickets Required Available at blackhawkmuseum.org

Bad posture is more than just an aesthetic issue – it can lead to discomfort, pain and possibly even more serious health problems. Studies show that regular chiropractic care may help improve posture. This can help to lead to less headaches, back pain and maybe even increase your energy.

Here are a few ways chiropractic can help your posture:

1. Adjustments can help keep your spine moving.

One of the major causes of poor posture is a lack of motion in your spine. This puts strain on your muscles and ligaments, which can lead to pain and stiffness. Adjustments can help mobilize your spine, which takes the pressure off of your muscles and ligaments and can help improve your posture.

2. Chiropractic care can help strengthen the muscles that support your spine. Lack of spinal movement can lead to a loss of strength and weakening of support muscles. Chiropractic care can help strengthen these muscles, which will help improve your posture.

3.Adjustments can release tense muscles. Are your muscles tense or tight often? Because adjustments are designed to restore motion, that means your muscles won’t have to pull as hard to keep things in their correct position.

4.Chiropractic can help improve your balance. When your spine lacks motion, it can cause you to feel less stable. Chiropractic care works to restore balance, making it easier for you to stand or sit tall.

5. Chiropractic care can help improve your flexibility. When your muscles are tight, they will decrease your range of motion, making you feel stiff. This can make it difficult to sit or stand tall. Chiropractic addresses the cause, allowing freedom of movement within your body.

If you or someone you care about are struggling with poor posture, we’d love to help. Contact us today at https://www. sycamorevalleychiropractic.com/contact-us/ to learn more and get your appointment booked.

A Longer Lasting “Tox” Is Finally Here

In a previous article this past year, I mentioned that a new longer-lasting neurotoxin was in development and soon to be released to select practices throughout the country. Well I’m thrilled to share that Blackhawk Plastic Surgery & MedSpa was selected as one of only a few in Northern California to have early access to DAXXIFY, the only FDA-approved, peptide-formulated neuromodulator that has been shown to last for up to 6 months to 9 months.

DAXXIFY is a new and very safe injectable treatment that is used to treat wrinkles, creases and frown lines on the face. While effects of other neuromodulators, such as Dysport, Botox and Xeomin, last for approximately 3-4 months, DAXXIFY patients have reported seeing results that last at least twice as long. That translates to 2 treatments per year compared to the usual 3-4.

With more people returning to socializing, in-person meetings and work, most women and men want to look and feel their very best – for their own self-confidence and to project a more professional, polished look. That’s a primary reason why many cosmetic procedures have exploded in popularity over the last few years. These procedures include tox injections, as well as dermal fillers, laser treatments and surgical procedures.

So how does this longer lasting tox called DAXXIFY work? Like the other brands, it is a simple protein that is injected into a muscle creating weakness. Muscle action is what causes the wrinkles of frown lines, forehead furrow and smile lines. Look in the mirror and make these expressions to see the muscles at work. By precisely and temporarily weakening these muscles, we can soften the expression and reduce or eliminate many wrinkles.

During the 5-minute procedure, DAXXIFY injections are carefully administered to target areas. The treatment is quick, easy and requires little to no downtime. DAXXIFY does not have significant side effects or safety concerns. As with any injectable treatment, patients may experience a little redness or mild discomfort at the injection site, but these mild side effects will resolve themselves on their own. Most patients will notice results within a day or two after their treatment and can expect results to last 6 to 9 months, or twice as long as other tox treatments.

For more information on DAXXIFY or any other one of our treatment options, please stop by the practice or give us a call at (925) 736-5757. We look forward to hearing from you!

Support our Montair Elementary School Foundation

Support our Montair Elementary School Foundation:

We are excited to announce that preparations for our 27th Annual Montair Foundation Auction are underway. Our live Auction “Dress the Night in Black and White” will take place Saturday, February 25th, 2023, at Blackhawk Country Club.

How will the Auction’s fundraised dollars be spent?

100% of the dollars raised at our Auction will directly fund programs and staff positions that enhance our students’ educational experience, helping to provide resources that the State of California does not fully fund. Through the generosity of our community, we can continue to offer reading and math intervention programs, enrichment classes including art, drama, music, and leadership, paraeducators who give extra support and reduce student/ teacher ratios, additional librarian hours for greater student access to library resources, and more! These beloved programs and staff are part of what makes Montair such a special school but are only possible with the support of community members like you.

How can you help?

There are several ways for you to support Montair’s Auction this school year – no contribution is too small!

Contribute to our Auction:

• Do you own a business such as a restaurant or boutique? Gift cards for restaurants, other local businesses, and professional services are always welcome. Gift baskets are always hot items to bid on as well.

• Do you have a vacation home that you would be willing to contribute to an auction winner for a short stay?

• Do you have extra wine or other spirits that you can contribute?

• Do you have access to tickets for local sporting events, concerts, or theater

productions? These are some of our most popular items.

• Do you have any frequent flier miles or hotel points that you can contribute?

If you would like more information on how to help or get involved please visit us at montairfoundation.schoolauction.net/ auction2023. or visit montairfoundation. schoolauction.net/auction2023

Resolutions and Goal Setting for Teens

With2023 in full swing, your parents have probably asked you the dreaded question: “What was your resolution this year?” It’s no secret that resolutions are hard to stick to, especially with a load of coursework as the new semester begins. Here are some tips on making and keeping your goals.

Picking a promise for the new year that keeps you motivated is essential. Choose something that is not impossible but still challenges you. Don’t set yourself up for failure! One way to come up with a resolution is by looking at habits that have caused you stress in the past. Remember that your goals have no limits- you can even try creating one with family or friends. Finding someone else with the same goal can be inspiring, and you can help each other stay on track. Let your creativity flow!

Keeping your resolution can be difficult; studies show that over 80% of them get forgotten by February. While it is true, there are small steps you can take to accomplish them. For example: try setting small goals that eventually lead to your resolution. Keeping a planner or leaving notes for yourself to complete your goal can also help keep you motivated. Another good way to keep your intent is by creating rewards. Is there something you want to buy? Why not try making it a reward for yourself if you complete your objective? Incentives are great for keeping you motivated!

Setting Goals and keeping them can be difficult, but if you follow through, you’re bound to complete them!

February Equals

Self Care, Family, Friends, Coworkers

February is equated as the month of love. Commercially, February exponentially explodes the sale of roses, boxes of chocolate, and a girl’s best friend - diamonds. But more broadly and importantly, February is the month to celebrate relationships. February is the month of self-care, family, friends, and significant others.

I wrote about the importance of self-care last year. If you are not your best self, it is difficult to be your best for others. Assuming, you followed the article “What’s Love Got to Do with It” (Feb, 2022),

you are ready to empower those around you by being present in every relationship of your life.

Relationships are essential to our well being and define who we are. Beyond romance, healthy relationships with family, friends and coworkers act as endorphins for our mental and physical stamina. I thoroughly enjoy the times I share with my family. But I have to be cognizant to recognize how I am being present for each of them. Am I creating a safe space for each to find their best selves? I appreciate reflecting on the individuality of each family member and to celebrate what each member brings to me - almost like nourishment - to strengthen my best self.

Likewise, your career is at its best if relationships on the job are healthy where mentoring and support is part of the work culture. If this is not part of your work experience, it may be time to evaluate the power you have to create a healthy and safe atmosphere at the workplace. I do believe that it is possible to create a work environment that doesn’t feel like work because you enjoy going to it every day

The last ingredient - friendships - are a major part of the formula for a healthy mind and body. Whether I am with high school friends from years ago or newly developed relationships, I value our conversations to teach me and help me grow. The phrase “You are the company you keep” resonates for me. If the company I keep does not help me flourish, I may need to redefine the relationship.

February = Self care + Family + Friends + Coworkers. This equation has the power to support your health inside and out. The balance of these ingredients, if added correctly, can empower you and those around your to celebrate wonderful relationships and a full life. If your equation is not adding up, reach out to EYHLifeCoach. This is what we strive to create. Set up a free consultation today.

Our Future Looks Bright

Abrightfuture for Danville is dependent on engaged, knowledgeable citizens being willing to get involved in the role of the Town in our community. That bright future is very visible in future the current generation of high school students that we see, having incredible passion for improvement and change in building a stronger and more sustainable future. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work with several high school students who asked to participant in an internship in local governance based on my role as Mayor/Councilmember in Danville. As it turns out, of the nearly dozens of interns I have worked with, all have been strong leaders in their own right. Recently one such intern, Sonia Sharma, turned out to be a shining star giving hope that the future is truly very bright.

Throughout the world, it’s commonly thought that all careers are not created equal. Earlier this year, a local teenager, Sonia Sharma (who started her internship when she was in the 8th grade), noticed a gap in her community through the significant difference in opportunities for those who want to go into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) compared to those who want to go into the arts and humanities. To address this, in May of last year, Sharma talked about creating opportunities for students interested in the arts and humanities by creating a program for local youth with interests in writing and public speaking. Out of this was born the idea of a Youth Poet Laureate to represent the Town and the greater youth community. Danville already has a Poet Laurette, Elaine Betts, but that position largely represents

the adult community. Sharma helped draft a proposed ordinance for the Town Council to consider creating this new student position. After a few rewrites and review by the City Attorney, Ms. Sharma proposed the idea to the entire Council at a study session. The Council supported the idea and asked that the ordinance be brought forward to a future Town Council public meeting. Sharma’s selling point to the Council was that the Danville Youth Poet Laureate would get the opportunity to write poetry about the Town, for the Town, and present it at Town events, alongside the adult Poet Laureate. The program would provide an additional opportunity for teens who had interests in writing, such as herself, and for learning public speaking and general oratory skills. Ms. Sharma presented the final ordinance at the Town Council meeting and the Youth Poet Laureate ordinance was approved unanimously in May of 2022 establishing this position for Danville high students. The program not only offers writing and public speaking experience, but also offers mentorship from the Town’s current adult Poet Laureate. Ms. Sharma hopes that the program will continue to benefit Danville in years to come, and encourage local youth to further explore the world of literature. The Youth Poet Laureate is a two-year appointment by the Town Council for any high school student that resides within the Town of Danville limits.

All the while Sharma worked on developing the new position, she knew that she herself would not be eligible because she lived just outside the Town borders. Although she herself was unable to apply, she’s was very

excited to see the first Youth Poet Laureate, Madeleine Roytfeld, a SRVHS student, selected as Danville’s first Student Poet Laureate. Ms. Roytfeld was selected from three candidates with each of the candidates writing a poem that could be presented at the 41st Annual Mayors Installation and Community Awards televised event last December. The Danville Council is immensely proud of the new Student Poet Laureate and for Sonia Sharma’s selfless efforts to give students a voice in her community. On behalf of Danville, thank you Sonia Sharma and congratulations to Madeleine Roytfeld!

How Community Banking Works

Big banks, community banks, and credit unions are different ways consumers utilize the real and financial economy. The “Big Banks’’ are the nationwide or international brand-name banks you might be familiar with or have seen in advertising. Community banks, on the other hand, build relationships with and directly support their local community. Unfortunately, there is often a disconnect between consumers’ understanding of the banking world and its impact on our economy.

While Big Banks and community banks both work as financial institutions to safeguard their clients’ money—community banks, such as Community Bank of the Bay, work quite differently than big banks. Community banks operate in the real economy—or Mainstreet—meaning they work to support the local community members, businesses, non-profit organizations, and many more.

Many Big Banks take their customers’ deposits and, in turn, use that money in the financial economy (such as the stock market, investments on Wall Street, and potentially in environmentally harmful projects). Bottom line: their customers have no control over how or where their deposits are spent. On the opposite end, community banks use deposits to fund the needs of the entire community, benefiting everyone.

The Community Bank Lifecycle

The lifecycle of a community bank is simple. The more businesses and community members participate in community banking by making deposits, the more loans can be distributed to grow the community—and the local economy.

As community banks grow, they provide more stability to the community because of their strong relationships with individuals and community organizations. In addition, community banks are better able to understand the needs of their local communities because

they are made up of people from that same community. This allows quicker and more efficient decisions for borrowers instead of relying on a biased and inaccurate algorithm for loan approvals.

The relationship between the community and their community bank is genuine and mutually beneficial. Both entities are empowered by the other’s success. If you are part of a community bank, you know this as a fact. Community banks working in the real economy—for neighbors and neighborhood businesses— keep our local community and economy thriving. Community Bank of the Bay strives to build a strong Mainstreet economy throughout our Bay Area communities. Our relationship managers are skilled in finding the right way to support your organization’s needs because they understand our community’s local needs. Loving Someone with Dementia

Loving someone with Alzheimer’s, dementia or another form of memory loss can be complex and heartbreaking. As the disease progresses, you may have begun to notice a shift in your loved one’s personality. They may say or do things that are foreign to you and appear to be a different person from whom you once knew.

The beautiful thing about love is that it is an emotion that can be felt. While your loved one may have a hard time recalling your name, you can convey to them that you are someone that they love - and that they are someone that you love.

Here are some tips on how to show someone with memory loss that you love them:

1. Keep them company. Sit with them a little longer. Watch their favorite tv program. Or bring them outside to soak in the sunshine. One of the greatest acts of love is giving someone your time and presence.

2. Connect with them through music. Sing their favorite song to them. You may sound off-key, but a song from someone who loves you makes more of an impact than listening to a recording. Songs can also convey the feeling of love, happiness and tenderness in a way that sentences cannot. Singing your loved one their favorite song can give them comfort if they are confused or angry.

3. Keep them comfortable. Making them a cup of warm tea, giving them a hand massage with lotion, or putting their sweater or socks on for them can show affection beyond words.

4. Practice patience. As memory loss progresses, you may find your patience being tested more frequently with an increase in repetitive behaviors. Practicing patience with your loved one can be a way to express your love for them in the most difficult moments. Remember, your loved one practiced patience with you once.

5. Give yourself grace. Speaking with others who are experiencing the same situation can help you cope. Finding a local caregiver’s support group or connecting with your local Alzheimer’s Association can give you the tools you need to navigate this journey.

Reaching out to your local experts can help as well. The team at Carefield Pleasanton is always available to answer your questions about memory care for your loved one, and the benefits of a community. Achieving your Nutrition and Weight Loss Goals

The new year is a great time for new beginnings and fresh starts. Every new year, many people set new goals, intentions, or resolutions for the year. You start with incredible enthusiasm to reach your goals.

Losing weight is often at the top of many people’s New Year’s resolutions yearly! You may have already begun your weight loss journey in January. Here’s what may be getting in your way and how to overcome the five most common dieting obstacles:

• Eliminating or restricting foods that you enjoy

• Reducing your calorie intake too much

• Starting an ambitious exercise routine

• Creating an unrealistic timeline to lose weight

• Giving up because you’re frustrated

It doesn’t have to be this way in 2023! With a few small changes to your weight loss approach, you can maintain your weight loss for years to come.

Clinical studies show that strict diets are more likely to cause people to overeat. This happens when you are restrictive with food or your diet is too rigid. So, what’s the solution? Flexible Dieting. Flexible Dieting is a science-based, reality-tested method for achieving and maintaining weight loss. You eat healthy foods 80-90% of the time and allow some of your favorite “treats” the other 10-20% of the time. Dieters showed more restraint when they followed a flexible dieting approach. Flexible Dieting leads to lower body weight, causes less overeating, and has a higher probability of long-term weight loss.

Dieting is harder when you reduce calories too low for too long; it’s a common approach that won’t work well for lasting results. Chronic dieting, or cutting calories too much, can leave you hungry, irritable, lacking energy, and frustrated. If you cut your calories more modestly, you are more likely to maintain your weight loss. Use the approach of more stamina and less intensity.

You may have shown up at a gym on January 1st this year or in past years and seen overcrowded and bustling activity. By February,

the crowds die because they set lofty, impossible goals. The better approach is to start small and build over time. Instead of committing to working out every day, try starting with two days a week. Instead of spending an hour at the gym, start with 10-20 minutes. You are more likely to keep going once you feel a sense of accomplishment from going twice a week. Small steps, compounded over time, lead to transformational results!

Many weight loss programs promise quick results, making it appealing to take the bait. You’ve seen the magazine covers at the grocery store: “Lose 30 pounds in 20 days.” You get excited that a promise of fast weight loss is possible. What’s inside that magazine holds the secret! We all know the claims are false. Ideal weight loss should be .5-1% of your current body weight per week. If you are going faster than 1% of your body weight, you will likely lose muscle, water, and only a bit of fat. When you lose weight at the right pace, you will preserve muscle mass, lose more body fat, and are more likely to maintain your weight loss. If you remove the timeline to lose weight and focus on creating new healthy habits, you will have won!

You might give up your weight loss goal because what you’re trying isn’t working. You’re not sure what to try next, so it’s easier to stop and try again later with a different approach. You haven’t failed; you aren’t a failure because your diet didn’t work. You might need personalized guidance and accountability from a nutrition coach. Asking for help may be what you need to reach your weight loss goals in 2023.

Beyond the Box Nutrition® could be your answer if you want 2023 to be the year you finally achieve your weight loss.
