What started as a project to help boost awareness of every activity sport and program in Weston, turned it into a full-blown publishing business with five area magazines in Broward County. We are run by a group of moms who know how valuable this publication is to our families. We do this because we love it and because we make a difference in our communities. We do this for you…our readers! It’s been quite a rewarding journey with many important team members along the way who helped us grow, mature and hone our variety of professional skills to make the Sports and Activities Directory successful. As we look back on the struggles, the juggles and the chaos of publishing deadlines over the last 20 years, we are very proud of how we stayed the course to maintain our unique identity and become the only single source for recreational sports, activities, schools, and family event information in the cities where we publish. We work honestly and ethically to ensure that the people we do business with, along with our readers, can trust that we do what we say. We attribute our growth to the outstanding relationships we have built in the communities and by simply doing the right thing consistently. We have a genuine commitment to all of our clients’ successes. The goal has always been to create a highquality, useful publication for our readers. Combine that with a well-established, targeted readership, and our long-term advertisers reap a vast return on their advertising dollars with Sports and Activities Directory.

Happy 20th Anniversary to US!

MARGOT LYONS PULERI President: Top Spin Publishing,

Thank you to every team member past and present who took a leap of faith without a salary and trusted that success would come. I have been with the Sports & Activities Directory since the 2nd issue published and what a whirlwind affair it has been! It was love at first sight when I first got a hold of this publication in 2002 and I cannot believe how much I have loved this career! Our creative director, Jen Gowen, as been with us over 18 years and is instrumental in our unique look, professional ad design, and is responsible for every perfect page, cover and opener we have done! Our Territory Manager Linda Lombardi has been the driving force of advertising sales and client relationships for over 15 years! Our Publisher Kim Kadel has licensed two areas and now focuses solely on Coral Springs & Parkland. Anina Venuti publishes in Plantation and Isabel Magette publishes in Weston. Team members Carolyn Lass and Erika Denis contribute with territory development and advertising sales as well. I am so proud of all the sacrifices made and hard work this team contributes every issue. It has been our true joy to have been able to get back over $100,000 in sponsorships and donations, as well as over $3 million in pro bono advertising to date for not for profit organizations, city run programs and events, optimist clubs, schools, and youth sports teams. We hope we have been and will continue to be a source of inspiration to start a new sport or hobby, a resource to find fun things to do with the families, a lifesaver because of the important health and safety programs, a successful medium for our advertisers, and a keepsake for your family because your child made the cover or was featured in our magazine for doing some thing extraordinary. Thank you, thank you, thank you for 20 amazing years of to you, Margot Inc. City/SW

Hello Davie Residents, I can’t believe that the summer has already come and gone, and that we have begun another exciting school year here in the Town of Davie. As children get adjusted to their new school schedules, please remember that it is never too late to begin (or continue) teaching your children essential life safety skills through swim lessons. Throughout the fall, swim lessons will be offered for children 6 months and older, by our certified Water Safety Instructors, who are proud to teach these skills to our community’s children in a fun and safe environment at the Pine Island Fitness and Aquatic Center.

Our Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department also offers many great programs, special events and sports leagues throughout the year. Currently we are accepting registrations for our Winter Soccer Leagues for children ages 3 – 15 years old. Soccer is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and all these exciting practices and games will take place inside of Bamford Sports Complex located inside of beautiful Pine Island Park. Youth sports participation provides many benefits to our youth. Besides the fact that it gets our children away from the ever-present device screentime, they also teach children teamwork and discipline, provide social opportunities, and develop self-esteem. These are essential life skills, that we will help develop at an early age. One of my favorite events every year is the Halloween Happenings event hosted annually within the Davie Arena located at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. This annual kid friendly event will take place on Saturday, October 29th. The event will feature a costume contest, a pumpkin patch, games, and the added special Davie touch of a Horse Costume Contest! For our older kids and their families, the Town, in conjunction with the South Florida Cloggers, will host the annual haunted house that will take place at the Pine Island Multipurpose Center at Bamford Sports Complex for the second consecutive year. The event will take place on October 22nd, 27th, 28th and 29th. In addition to the haunted house there will be food, games, and vendors to keep everyone entertained as they wait to enter the most “spooktacular” haunted house in South Florida. When looking through our activities, remember, whether it’s swimming, community special events, fitness, youth sports, or recreation classes for all ages, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department has something for everyone in your family. For more information on any Davie program, just call (954) 327-3941. As always, see you in the parks, and don’t forget to “like” us on Facebook.Sincerely,JudyPaul Mayor of Davie

While the summer slows some effort down, the Town is continuing to make progress on a number of projects related to our parks and recreation.

Hello Southwest Ranches,

Further east, at Calusa Corners Park (Griffin, between Dykes and I-75) we are embarking on our 2022 Planting Improvement Project. This is the time to do our planting so that the summer rains can provide a healthy start. This project will be true to natural foliage of Florida while providing additional beauty to this part of our Town.

Out west, at the Country Estate Fishing Hole Park, (Griffin and 190th) fill that has been placed at the park has now been spread and the field that we have envisioned for many years is starting to take shape. Work still needs to be done to provide the proper playing surface and to ensure that the surface is protected from recreational vehicles. However, it is wonderful to see this progress being made. We are thankful for great partners in this project such as George Morris of PHI Construction, in making this a reality.

I send a special thanks to December Lauretano-Haines, Parks, Recreation, Open Space Manager, for her leadership and hard work to always keep our parks looking their best while being true to our Florida roots. (Pun intended!)

Sincerely,Steve Breitkreuz Mayor - Southwest Ranches

In Rolling Oaks Park (178th), the Town recently approved the funding to improve those grounds around the water elements of that park. This will add to the attractiveness of the open space. But this is more than just a cleanup or maintenance. It is being done in a way to preserve the habitat of the various animals that have made this element their home. This is key to who we are as a Town. Promoting the use of the open spaces while preserving natural habitat.

It brought great joy in seeing so many neighbors and friendly faces at a marquee event that thankfully returned after a hiatus due to the pandemic. I hope you have also marked your calendar for some fun outings coming up next month. On September 3, please join us for the Bike Rodeo, where kids can take part in fun bicycle courses, get helmet fittings, and even receive giveaways. Just a couple weeks later, on September 17, bring the kids to Touch-a-Truck, as several City and BSO vehicles are rolled out for all to enjoy. Both of these events will be held at Suellen H. Fardelmann Sports Complex. The fun does not stop there. Moms and kids can dress up and put on their capes for “Superhero Training” on Friday, September 23. Registration opens on August 24 at the Community Center and Pool and Tennis Center. You can also find information on these events, and more, at www. CooperCity.gov/Calendar.Withthefallseasonupon us, I also remind our community that the Optimist Club of Cooper City offers a variety of sports that include flag football, softball, baseball, and basketball. It’s a special time for the Optimist Club, as we approach its 50th anniversary. Our City looks forward to celebrating alongside this terrific volunteer-driven organization that has made a positive impact on our youth. As always, I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact my office by dialing 954-434-4300 and pressing option #6.

Dear Cooper City Residents, I hope you and your loved ones are enjoying a wonderful summer full of quality time with family and friends! One of the highlights of my summer has been July’s “Eat to the Beat.” These special events are always a great opportunity to come together as a community, while enjoying great food, dancing to lively music, and simultaneously supporting a number of our local vendors. I am happy to report that Cooper City’s proposed budget for 2023 provides funding for three “Eat to the Beat” events, which will complement our Parks and Recreation Department’s myriad of special events throughout the year.

Speaking of our Parks and Recreation Department, I would like to recognize our dedicated, creative, and fun-loving team in Cooper City. Our City Commission recently proclaimed July as Parks and Recreation Month. Throughout the summer, our team received numerous compliments from our summer campers and parents. Furthermore, camp counselors and student volunteers lauded the summer program for the variety of activities, trips, and themed events that kept campers engaged throughout their summer break. If you have a child, who did not participate in Cooper City’s summer camp this year, I strongly encourage you to inquire about it next year. If your child is in high school, please look out for the Student Volunteer Program as we approach summer in 2023. The program provides an exciting way to earn volunteer hours, while having fun and making friends! With summer break in the rearview mirror, I am wishing our children, parents, teachers, administrators, support staff, and school resource officers a safe, exciting and impactful school year full of learning and great achievements. I hope you had the opportunity to join us earlier this month at the National Night Out and Back-to-School Fair organized by our BSO Cooper City District in partnership with the City of Cooper City. The event truly displayed the great spirit of camaraderie that makes our hometown “Someplace Special.”

ROBOTICS AND CODING

The team was moved back up to the highly competitive Division 2 and Molina then committed to a second year coaching. The team went from a 228 ranking to top 50 in Florida in the second year. They won 3 tournaments and were finalists in the 4th tournament competing against out of state teams. With Assistant Coaches Warren Gerstein and Fadil Ameerally, JR’s three daughters as Team Trainers, and Team Manager Marie Gerstein, JR brought a regime of excellence in performance training, technical skills, teamwork, and game strategy. Before practice starts, every player runs two miles. In a normal game, JR says a player runs 5-6 miles, so two miles before practice is just warming up. Drills and game play then go on for 2 hours of practice. JR plays music during practice, not for fun or motivation though, he plays music so there is constant background noise that players must drown out in order to focus on the coaches’ voices. After practice, players run another mile. Conditioning of this type in our Florida heat and humidity allow his team to dominate against less physically disciplined teams in the 2nd half. They train no less than 3 days a week. JR insists on good grades and attendance at school, as well as 100% commitment, team camaraderie with no bullying, and positive thinking. ‘It’s not one thing that makes a successful team, it’s every thing,” said Molina. He insists that if his players are smart in school, they will be smart on the field. This type of leadership and coaching led to JR Molina and Warren Gerstein being named 2021/22 CCO Coach of the Year and Boys Team Manager of the Year. The road to the State Championship Commissioners Cup encompassed four different weekends in different cities. The played in Ft. Lauderdale and won the District. They then won against Juventus to get to the semifinals. They played against St. Petersburg in Bradenton winning 3-2 to get to the finals. The championship game was played north of Tampa against Orlando, where the CCO Cobra U15 Boys Team made history, handily winning 4-1 to bring home the first ever CCO Boys Soccer State Championship Trophy! Proud Coach Molina has told the team from the first meeting 2 years ago, “Dedication is the key…If you really want it and earn it, you’ll get it!

Members of the Cooper City Optimist U15 Boys Cobras Team were: Cannon Ameerally - midfielder; Jake Ameerally - defender; Joseph Artanis - defender; Ethan Cagua - midfielder; Gabriel Calderon - midfielder; Carter Chendefender; Alex Chiorean - defender/winger; Victor Cruz - defender/winger; Steven Dubin - winger; Mikey Freed - defender/winger/goalie; Dallas Gerstein - midfielder; KJ Jones - striker; Liam Lynch - utility player; Amir Morley - utility player; Javier Morley - goalie; Emmanuel Tapia - defender; Joshua Tsudek - utility player; Head Coach Junior Molina; Assistant Coach Fadil Ameerally ; Assistant Coach Warren Gerstein; trainers Sebastian Gerstein, Sarah Molina, Sofia Molina and Sabrina Molina; Team Manager Marie Gerstein; Fundraiser Hope Jones.

Congratulations to the Cooper City Optimist Boys U15 Soccer Team for winning the Commissioners Cup Division 2 State Championship! For the first time in the Cooper City Optimist’s history, a boys’ team reigned superior to every other soccer club in Florida. It was an incredible feat taking two years in the making, combining the desire, determination, talent and drive of every player, coach, parent and trainer. There’s nothing better than a true under dog story with a great end result!

2022October-AugustMid|35Issue|DirectoryActivities&SportsRanchesSW/CityCooper/Davie DIRECTORY26

By Margot Puleri

Historically, the all volunteer-run Cooper City Optimist (CCO) soccer program continually lost their elite level players to other area clubs who were winning tournaments with top level, paid coaches and trainers. It seemed that CCO would never be able to form a U15 boys team that would be able to contend, let alone win a state tournament! It’s the age old seemingly insurmountable hamster wheel of gaining momentum as a team and then one, two, or three jump off and they have to start all over again from where they began. However, over the past two years in a combined effort with JR Molina as Head Coach, the hamster wheel is gone and a true foundation has been built for unlimited club growth! Head Coach JR Molina has been on the CCO Board of Directors for 11 years and is now President. He had been coaching his daughter’s elite soccer teams for 16 years after being licensed in Barcelona, Spain. With some coercion, JR agreed to be Head Coach of a boys team for one year. After his team was selected and committed, he immediately made a strategic decision to move the team down to Division 3 to build the players skills and technical development. When they improved enough in that first year and began to dominate with a record of 9-2-1 in the first half of the season, confidence was high and they went undefeated in the next six tournaments.

Coming full circle, it is now the CCO’s turn to reap the rewards of new players flocking from all over Broward, Dade and Palm Beach Counties to Cooper City Optimist Club vying for a position on the Cobra team. Sixty five percent of their team returned for this season, which bodes well for another super successful year! Sometimes, the underdog does win!

Be consistent. Want it! Win it!”
