Dear Readers, WELCOME BACK to your Sports & Activities Directory! We’ve missed you and the community involvement during the pandemic. Now that sports, activities, events and schools are happening again...the Sports & Activities Directory team is off the bench and back in the game! I’m sure you are wondering what is open, what’s happening and what new and exciting things are being offered for your family. We’re on it! This issue focuses on Back to School and Fall/Winter programs and special events, as well as just about everything you need yo know to get out and about again. With all the changes that have happened throughout the world and right here in your town, many changes happened with our publication and team as well. Unfortunately, many programs, businesses and activities are no longer around. It has been an arduous 18+ month journey for everyone! The Sports & Activities Directory team has also made many adjustments to accommodate the needs of publishing and the Publishers of our five different area directories. With that said, please welcome our newest Publisher/Licensor of the Weston Sports & Activities Directory, Isabel Magette. Isabel has been a stellar territory representative in Weston for several years and recently made a big leap to purchase the Weston area license during this pandemic. This is her first issue as Publisher and she has proven that this is her calling. The Davie/Cooper City/SW Ranches Sports & Activities Directory Publisher, Nikki Reading, has stepped down to pursue a new career. She did an awesome job for so many years and will be missed greatly by all of those with whom she worked. I am very excited to resume the Publisher role for this area and have been busy meeting with Parks & Recreation staff, businesses and Mayors, as well as taking photos of all of you out at the parks and events. Kim Kadel remains as Publisher/Licensor of the Coral Springs/Parkland Directory, as does Anina Venuti for Plantation. Linda Lombardi is the Managing Director for the Pembroke Pines Directory, handling all photos, sales and communication with businesses, schools and organizations. Carolyn Lass is our Territory Representative floating between our five areas. Last, but not least, Jennifer Gowen remains our unbelievably talented artistic director and graphic designer as she has for the past 18 years. We are a strong and devoted team and we are all in this together to bring you the most valued, fun and informative publications for your families. We thank you for waiting patiently for us to get this issue in your hands again. We thank and are so grateful to our cherished advertisers for their continued business and loyalty. We thank our cities and schools for their ongoing support. We can’t do what we do without all of you! Enjoy this issue in hard copy or online at www.sportsandactivities.com. All of our five area Directories are available on our website for viewing and/or downloading and have interactive links to visit our advertisers’ websites. My best to you,

Margot

Dear Readers,

8

As you know, August is one of our hottest months of the year, so I urge parents and others to remain vigilant about the ongoing danger of leaving children and pets in hot cars. Temperatures that might seem comfortable for adults can quickly become dangerous for children and pets. Even elderly passengers who can’t care for themselves, or those with cognitive problems, can also be at risk if they’re left in a car on even a mild day. Never, ever leave your kids or pets in a parked car, even for a moment. This is also the time for the new school year to begin. Another important reminder is for motorists to slow down and proceed with caution in school zones, stop for buses and be alert for children walking in the street or biking to school. The first day of school in Broward County is August 18th so school zones will once again be operational. It is hard to believe that 20 years have passed since terrorists commandeered airplanes, taking the lives of nearly 3,000 people, in horrific attacks on our country. Despite the time, the memories remain vivid and all too recent for many, especially those directly affected. I would like to personally invite everyone to attend the 9/11 Ceremony on Saturday, September 11, 2021 as the City of Pembroke Pines remembers and honors those who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington D.C. and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The ceremony will take place at Memorial Park adjacent to the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way. For more information regarding the City of Pembroke Pines observance of Patriot Day, please call 954-392-2116. Beginning September 1, 2021, visitors of the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way, can discover and celebrate diverse histories and rich culture through a new pop-up exhibition series in the lobby. Presented by The City of Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department, Upfront in The Pines is a rotating exhibition series that focuses on culture, education and history. In collaboration with Florida Memory, Upfront in The Pines offers a special opportunity to view media from the Florida State Library and Archives of Florida. Displays will include documentary photography, literature and maps. Additionally, QR codes will provide links to Florida Memory’s digital archives containing related film media and audio clips. Guests can enjoy the pop-up exhibit during a short visit, or follow links to Florida’s state archives to uncover cultural moments and reveal hidden histories. Masks are required in City Hall. We also have some exciting news for the kids in the city. The Touch-A-Truck Vehicle Expo is coming back and will take place on September 25, 2021 from 10am to noon at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way. Children will have the opportunity to get up close and explore, climb and touch trucks, emergency response vehicles, heavy machinery, construction vehicles and all sorts of other equipment used for transportation. Guests of all ages also will be able to meet the personnel who serve and protect the community, including Fire and Police Officers. Visitors will be able to ask questions and actually experience what the vehicles are truly like. An added bonus as part of this learning experience is having the opportunity for one-on-one interaction with local and national transportation representatives. Admission and parking are free. For more information, please call 954-392-2116 or visit www.ppines.com/specialevents. As you can see the City has many exciting things this month and we are only getting started. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com.

Your Mayor,

Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines

football President Jim Ross said, “you knew, even back then, that all four would be in the NFL one day” Ross added. Lance Rigby, PPO Football Commissioner, had the privilege of coaching both Joey and Nick. “Both were outstanding athletes,” Rigby said, “but Nick Bosa was big for his age and had to play up (to the next age/weight division), and was by far the best player in the league. Nick only wanted to play defense,” Rigby went on to say, “he wanted no part of offense.” “PPO is extremely proud of the numerous NFL athletes that developed through the PPO program, but having four 1st round picks is something that we are all proud to be a part of,” Ross said. All four athletes were honored with having their pictures up in the locker room, as well as on banners around the park. “Our players are excited that they can play on the same field as where these now NFL players once practiced every day.” Pembroke Pines Optimist Club is located at 7400 Pines Blvd. in Pembroke Pines. The purpose of this Orientation Camp was to help new students become acclimated to middle school at “The Trail” as we refer to STMS, while establishing connectedness, school pride, community involvement, and student engagement. These students had the opportunity to participate in various activities including “Le Tour de Mustang”, which entailed touring the school to get acquainted with campus grounds. The “Get on Board- Get Involved” activity, introduced and exposed the students to various clubs and extra-curricular activities. Our “Navigate the Social-Emotional Waters” activity, allowed students to explore social skills, gain insight necessary to develop healthy attitudes and identities, manage emotions, achieve personal and collective goals, and maintain supportive relationships. Sixth Grade Parents were also invited to attend Camp Mustang to participate in an informational presentation by our administration and support staff. Silver Trail Middle School’s Camp Mustang Program is viewed as an integral part of the middle school journey. This experience allows students to get comfortable and ready to meet success during the upcoming school year. We look forward to an AWESOME SCHOOL YEAR! Silver Trail Middle is located at 18300 Sheridan Street in Pembroke Pines. Their Principal is Steve Frasier. They can be reached at (954) 323-4300.

s time ticked down, the Pines Charter Jaguars basketball team was in position to win their first Florida 5A state championship. The clock hit zero in Lakeland Florida, and the Jaguars had done it, the state title was coming home to South Florida for the first time in the school’s history. This year’s squad was very impressive throughout the playoffs. After winning districts and regionals, Charter faced a tough Jesuit team from Tampa in the state semifinal game in which they defeated Jesuit 63-57 in an overtime thriller behind Elijah Wyche’s 24 points and Kolby King’s 14. Breakout sophomore Brandon Armentaros expressed, “The feeling after beating Jesuit in the state semis was amazing. The team and I knew that we couldn’t get too excited because we still had one more game to get to what we really wanted.” That goal was the state title that they were working so hard to get after last year’s defeat in the state final to Rickards High from Tallahassee. Avenging that loss was their main goal throughout the season. Saturday the 6th came around and it was time for Charter to go to war with Choctawhatchee High from Fort Walton Beach for the 5A state championship.

H

Choctawhatchee had a record of 26-2 going into Saturday but later that afternoon, an extra loss would be tallied up for the team from Fort Walton. Hundreds were in attendance in Lakeland to support Pines Charter in their efforts to claim the state throne. The Jaguars came out firing outscoring the Indians 23-9 in the first quarter. Despite a slow second quarter, Charter came out after halftime with enough firepower to hang on to their lead throughout the third and fourth quarter to win the state championship for Pines Charter. Charter was led by stellar performances by juniors Kolby King, Caelum Ethridge, Geoff Sprouse, and Elijah Wyche. Wyche, who played a key role in the success Charter had this year explained, “It’s crazy because ever since my freshman year it’s been a goal of mine to get a state championship under my belt and to finally do it just feels unreal. Our squad was too talented and we got it done.” As the most successful season in school history ends, it’s now time for the younger generation of Jaguars to step up and live up to the expectations left by the team who left on top. It was a phenomenal season for the 5A Florida state champions, our very own Pembroke Pines Charter Jaguars.

ave you ever heard the saying, “it takes a village to raise a child”? Many schools in Broward County have had to devise unique ways to address the students’ needs. At Flanagan High, we had to come together to design and accomplish educational strategies previously thought impossible. To that end in 2020-2021, we continued to make that connection through the E-Learning experience transitioning into a connection with those students who felt a face to face learning experience was what they were in desperate need of. We, here at Flanagan, saw first hand the social, emotional, and academic despair that some of our students were experiencing. The village was launched and we sprang into action. A group of individuals banned together with one mission in mind, “ We will do whatever it takes to have success”! The Principal, Assistant Principals, Athletic Director, Coaches and Teachers all gathered with the idea of an ‘Academic Weight Room’. Student Athletes and student body who needed additional academic support would stay an hour after school and get assistance in the classes that they were not having success in. With-in weeks 40% of the football team was frequenting the Academic Weight Room. Grades were on the rise! Teacher tutoring and Peer tutoring was happening on a regular basis. Students were helping students and building the connections that were lost during the pandemic. Words can not describe the magic and beauty that was happening

a few afternoons a week! As our year was coming to an end, students were asking what they could do to retake some of the classes they were not successful in during the year. This is when the School Board announced their Summer Learning Opportunities. Flanagan High School’s football team was eager to be a part and asked where to register. One afternoon Ms. Paula Peters and one of her support facilitators sat and registered all interested players. It was clear that the Academic Weight Room had made a difference! The young men were eager to continue during the summer! Two out of the four days a week, the football players would gather in the room and take care of academic business. For some of our students it was just the feeling of ‘normal’ that they needed and others it was the rigor of having that one adult and the football coaches holding them accountable. “Knowing that Coach Mike and the Support Teacher are taking the time to check on my grades, makes me want to work harder!” was a typical statement made by many players. Flanagan High School works very hard to make the connection with each student and their families. It definitely takes a village to raise a child and we, here at Flanagan, are committed to doing what it takes to contribute to raising amazing young adults. Flanagan High School is located at 12800 Taft Street in Pembroke Pines. Paula Peters is their Principal. They can be reached at (754) 323-0650.

O

wls have come to play a valuable role at Renaissance Charter School at Pines. In the Harry Potter novels, the Owls were a source of companionship and information. Our Owls play a similar role with our teachers and students. Owls have been associated with magic and wisdom for a long time. At Renaissance Charter School at Pines, they are being magical in their ability to help us provide engaging distant learning, therefore, bringing much wisdom to our students. The Meeting Owl smart video conferencing camera captures 360-degree video and audio, creating an immersive teleconference which is nearly a face-to-face experience. They even “hoot” when they come online! Our teachers use Microsoft TEAMs with the Meeting Owl which outputs a split-screen to show other student participants and focuses on the current speaker during class. It also follows the teacher as she/he walks around the room. Instead of students staring at a full classroom on a screen and trying to figure out who’s speaking, the Owls are intelligent enough to know who is talking. It makes them the center of attention by automatically shifting the camera focus on whoever is speaking and keeps an eye on activities on the periphery, where there is motion or faces of other participants. It keeps those quadrants with activity in the other portions of the screen, allowing the feeling of nearly sitting in the classroom for those students who are attending virtually. These Owls are an incredible upgrade from using Zoom or Microsoft TEAMs video conferences alone when our remote students are connecting to a physical class

session as well as better for the students in the classroom. Instead of staring at a laptop camera while speaking, students are free to look around and discuss questions, answers, and topics normally. It is a much better and more organic experience. These Owls improve the effectiveness and efficiency of our teachers and the students’ classroom experiences greatly. There is an inherent disconnect between a classroom full of students with a teacher and a handful of remote learners on the other end of the line. Our Owls bridge that gap, making lessons and conversations flow and making it easier to see the subtle expression shifts and body chemistry that is often lost when you are not in the room. Bridging the gap between school and home, one “Hoot” at a time. Renaissance Charter School at Pines is located at 10501 Pines Blvd. in Pembroke Pines. They can be reached at (954) 862-1283 or visit www.recspines.org.

Students are guided in developing their fine and gross motor skills in activities such as constructing products, completing puzzles, and simple yoga stretches.

arely do children sail through school from kindergarten through twelfth grade without encountering a few challenges along the way. However, there are typical academic hurdles that teach children about perseverance and asking for help, and then there are big struggles that need intervention. How can you recognize a problem that requires more than just a bit of additional effort on your child’s part? Here are six signs that your child likely needs tutoring help: 1. Poor study skills – Is your child helpless when it comes to getting going on homework each night? Does he or she struggle to prioritize homework and waste time on meaningless tasks? Study habits are not inherent for most students and must be taught and practiced. Take a close look at things like your child’s notes and in-class worksheets and watch how he or she approaches homework each night. 2. A sharp decline in grades – Occasional bad grades on homework and tests happen even to the best of students and are nothing to get overly concerned about, but grades that get worse quickly might indicate that your child lacks basic skills and is having a hard time keeping up in the classroom. 3. Homework taking an exorbitant amount of time – Your child’s teacher(s) can tell you what is considered reasonable in terms of the amount of time spent on homework, but a good rule of thumb is 20 minutes of homework per night in first grade and 10 minutes additional per grade thereafter. If your fourth-grader is spending over an hour on homework each night but the grades don’t reflect the effort, you should investigate. 4. Lots of time-wasting – Does your child have difficulty getting started on homework just about every night? Is procrastination a frequent problem? These are indicators of a child who is either avoiding work because he or she doesn’t understand something or has a learning issue.

Students also have great opportunities to practice movement in our after-school programs such as our Environmental, Lego, Debate, National Elementary Honors Society, WPLE Morning Show, Safety Patrol, Student Council, Pawsome Buddies (peer mentoring), Robotics, and Musical Theatre Clubs. Whether we are learning through play, or just playing, the PLE Panthers are on the go! We, at Pasadena Lakes, believe that it is our civic responsibility to cultivate students who will utilize their knowledge and character, maximizing their potential to improve the world around them. Pasadena Lakes Elementary is located at 8801 Pasadena Blvd. in Pembroke Pines. Their Principal is Janet Williams. They can be reached at 754-323-6900.

5. Anger and apathy – Every child gets frustrated by homework sometimes but take note of excessive exasperation or anxiety. If your child used to enjoy school and now seems uninterested or upset whenever you try to help with homework, it’s time to explore what’s going on behind the scenes. 6. Avoidance – Regular declarations of feeling too sick to go to school. Dismissiveness when school comes up in conversation. Skipped homework (or frequent claims that no homework was assigned). All of these examples are signs that your child is losing interest in school. That avoidance could very well stem from school struggles. Open the lines of communication with your child to try to understand what’s actually happening. Obviously the biggest “red flag” that your child needs help in school is a poor report card, but there are plenty of indicators along the way. If you suspect that your child is having problems in school in between report cards, the first thing you should do is schedule a time to speak to the teacher to learn more about what he or she sees.
