Dear Readers,

As we begin a new school year, I hope you had a fun summer and had some family time to relax, enjoy, and make new memories. Now it’s back to the hustle and bustle of school, schedules, and routines. I hope your child is ready for all the new classes, friends, and experiences that will come with this new school year.

I would like to share some of my summer with you. My family and I took a road trip throughout Germany. My mother-in-law was born there and came to this country as a teenager, so it was wonderful to experience the country with someone who has lived there. We got to go to the house she grew up in and meet her family, which was lovely. We traveled to about seven areas from Frankfurt to Berlin. What a beautiful country, full of good food and good people. Spending time with family is the best! When I returned home, I was surprised to find out I was a recipient of a Pinnacle Award from the Miramar Pembroke Pines Chamber of Commerce. That was truly an honor for me! If you own a business you should consider being a part of the Chamber. They are a valuable tool to help businesses in the community grow. As this is our Back-to-School issue, you will find everything you need for your child’s return to the classroom. Where to sign them up for sports, what afterschool activities there are, where to have their birthday party, and so much more! Let your child explore something new if they show an interest. Did you know we also have things for adults? Don’t forget to check out our Events Page where you will find all sorts of outings to enjoy with your family. The City of Pembroke Pines does tons of events and most of them are free.

Please stop by to visit our advertisers and let them know you saw them in Sports & Activities Directory. If you have a sweet tooth like I do, check out The Peach Cobbler Factory for their decadent treats, or for the best ice cream in town, check out Cleveland’s Ice Cream Parlor located in Miramar.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful school year.

All my best to you, Linda

Dear Readers,

Recently I announced that I will not be seeking re-election in March 2024. I have had the honor and privilege of being the Mayor of this great City of Pembroke Pines for 19 years, preceded by 8 years serving as a Commissioner. This was a difficult decision because I love being your Mayor, but the time has come. For now, I am here, as your Mayor, and loving every minute of it. This is not a goodbye. There is still much work to be done and I am dedicated to doing the best job possible for all residents.

This year marks the 22nd Anniversary of the horrifying terrorist attack on the U.S. On Monday, September 11, 2023 the City of Pembroke Pines will remember and honor the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives during those attacks in New York, Washington D.C. and Shanksville, Pennsylvania during a special ceremony. It will be held from 8:30AM to 10:30AM at Memorial Park adjacent to the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way.

This solemn ceremony, which is free, will begin with the Presentation of Colors by the City of Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Department Honor Guards. All ages are encouraged to attend. It will also include guest speakers, community leaders and patriotic music featuring local school bands and area musicians. Those in attendance are encouraged to tour the statues that are part of Memorial Park. For more information regarding the City of Pembroke Pines observance of the 9/11 Anniversary or Patriot Day, please call (954) 392-2116.

Please be sure to mark your calendars and tell your friends about the Annual Veterans Employment Expo which will take place on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, from 10:00AM to 2:00PM at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus, located at 301 NW 103 Ave.

If you are a veteran in need of a job, I strongly encourage you to attend. It’s a great opportunity to meet directly with hiring managers in our area, from a variety of companies and organizations. Here in Pembroke Pines, we appreciate the support our veterans have received from the business community, and we especially appreciate our veterans for their service. For more information, please call the Center at (954) 450-6888

September 10th marks the peak of our hurricane season. According to weather experts, about 75% of Atlantic hurricane seasons since the start of the weather satellite era have had a named storm on this date. What does that mean for us? Simply that we must continue to be hurricane prepared. Please check out our Pembroke Pines Prepared Hurricane Resources at As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (954) 450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com.

From your Mayor,

T

he SECME STEM Olympiad program in Broward Schools is a strategic alliance to renew and strengthen the professional capacity of K-12 educators, motivate, and mentor students, and empower parents so that all students can learn and achieve at higher levels. STEM is a Nationwide initiative which focuses on Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). SECME’s mission is to increase the pool of historically underrepresented, under-served, and differently abled students who will be prepared to enter and complete post-secondary studies in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology, thus creating a diverse and globally competitive workforce. The SECME – STEM Olympiad combines these two philosophies into one event and will focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics principles as well as SECME national competitions. Broward County students compete in mousetrap cars, water bottle rockets, banners, generator build, bionic arms, and VEX exhibition.

Pines Lakes Elementary School students can participate in after-school teacher led clubs. SECME is an after-school club held twice a week. Students met after-school to discuss the SECME Olympiad requirements. The requirements included a written report, a blueprint, and photos of the models being entered into competition. Beginning in August 2022, our students conducted weekly observations, collected data, and collaborated to improve both their water bottle rockets and mousetrap cars. They worked collaboratively, problem solved, tested, made observations, and reimagined their prototypes. In addition, the students also entered their team banner. This year’s SECME Olympiad was The Meta Verse. The students created their own avatars, drew, and painted their images on the banner for later submission.

Pines Lakes Elementary SECME club students participated in water bottle rocketry and windup mousetrap cars on March 11, 2023. Students arrived at the Nova High School gym from our entire district to compete in the various categories. Two team represented each school that competed in each category from elementary through high school. The two teams that represented Pines Lakes Elementary this year were The Marvelous Mickey’s and Team Meta Stars. During the competition, each of our outstanding PLE Panthers continued to demonstrated tenacity, perseverance, and dedication. Our team The Meta Stars won 1st place in the Broward County Public Schools Districtwide competition for mousetrap car. That win qualified them to participate in SECME Nationals. Our students submitted a virtual portfolio to SEMCE. Within a couple of weeks, we were thrilled to be notified that our students won 2nd place in Nationals. Congratulations to Team Meta Stars (Kassandra Bolanos, Anthony de la Cruz, and Joseph Cummings-Nasief). Twenty-six students participated weekly in our club. We are so proud of each of their accomplishments and our hope is that they continue to pursue STEM in their future. Schedule a tour of our school, call (754) 323-7100.

Dearest Resident of Pembroke Pines, I am both delighted and proud to have joined the Lakeside Elementary leadership team in December of 2022. Prior to being appointed as the principal of Lakeside Elementary, I served as the principal of Sea Castle Elementary for over 12 years. During my time there, I was able to help the school not only achieve but maintain the pinnacle of success. As a school principal, I believe my job is to identify avenues of advancement for my scholars and instill in them tenacity, determination, confidence, and the value of education. My desire to extend my reach and diversify my experiences is what led me to Lakeside Elementary.

Raised by a single mother who worked two jobs to support my siblings and I, the value of hard work and making a difference in life became a paramount objective I continually strive to attain. I knew early on that I necessarily needed to utilize the grit my mother instilled in me to succeed in life. Not only was I focused on being the first in my family to graduate from high school, but I also wanted to be the first to become completely bilingual. Numerous opportunities were afforded to me as a minority coming from a proactive school district, including a college scholarship to the University at Buffalo. During my time at UB, I earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree. My education provided me with the platform to work

for the betterment of all scholars. Motivating, creating opportunities for literacy and self-improvement are important to me. My passion for learning continues to this day. In May of 2023, I graduated from Nova Southeastern University with a Doctorate in Educational Leadership.

During the 2023-2023 school year, I am excited to announce the Lakeside Elementary staff will be working to engrain in our scholars the principles of GRIT. Our goal is for each scholar to take on academic challenges with (G)umption, (R)esilency (I)ntegrity, and (T)enacity. My leadership team and I have been planning for a school year filled with exciting activities built to unite all stakeholders on our vision of “Fostering a growth mindset environment where every scholar achieves their best.” We have been working diligently this summer to build a “Dream Team.” A team that will, undoubtedly, inspire and motivate each scholar to recognize their fullest potential. Many exciting changes have been taking place this summer at Lakeside! All of which are aimed at surpassing the academic accomplishments previously attained! Beginning with the hiring of highly qualified teachers, paraprofessionals working towards their teaching degree, and the appointment of our new assistant principal, Zoe Leal, the Lakeside team is focused on one thing: the success of all scholars.

I look forward to welcoming home our scholars this August and kicking off the 2023-2024 school year. With the support of all stakeholders this year, I am confidant Lakeside’s Dream Team will DREAM MORE, ACHIEVE MORE, and SUCCEED MORE! Afterall, WE ARE LAKESDIE! 900 NW 136th Avenue, Pembroke Pines 33028. (754) 323-6400.

We are abuzz with anticipation and look forward to creating an environment where academic growth, creativity, and a vibrant school spirit flourish! Together, with a shared passion for education and community, we will work to make this year a transformative experience for every Pines Panther.

This year, we are proud to introduce an exciting new addition to our curriculum: the Cambridge International Program. This esteemed program, recognized worldwide, is designed to empower our students, turning them into confident, responsible, innovative, and engaged individuals. By implementing curriculum of the renowned Cambridge University, we aim to provide an enhanced academic experience in alignment with Broward County curriculum and Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards. One of the significant benefits of this program is that students who successfully meet the AICE course requirements in high school and complete their service hours can be eligible for the full Bright Futures Scholarship, regardless of SAT or ACT scores.

In our unwavering commitment to bridging education and technology, we’re excited to launch our new Immersive Media Lab, developed in collaboration with Verizon Innovative Learning Schools (VILS) and Heart of America. This cutting-edge lab features top-of-the-line virtual reality stations and 3D printers, offering students the opportunity to dive into immersive learning experiences and create tangible models of their ideas. From virtual field trips to hands-on problem-solving, the Immersive Media Lab is about more than just technology; it’s a space where curiosity meets

innovation, equipping our students with critical skills for the future and fostering a culture of lifelong learning.

Creativity has also found a home at Pines Middle School this year. Our Art department has partnered with the Florida Panthers and HandsOn Broward to embellish our hallways with stunning new murals. These pieces will not only beautify our space but also inspire creativity and stimulate intellectual curiosity among our students. We are eager for you to experience the transformed ambiance of our hallways!

Our dedicated team of teachers and staff is excited to welcome our students back and guide them through this exciting academic year. Their expertise, combined with our enriched academic offerings and cutting-edge resources, will undoubtedly drive Pines Middle School toward a new era of academic achievement.

School is a journey, and sometimes that journey will take your child off course or down an unintended path. Even the best of students will find some subjects or concepts difficult, but when an academic issue becomes bigger or seems to be affecting your child for an extended period of time, it’s best not to ignore it. Here are a few tips on how to help your child confront lingering learning issues that simply aren’t going away on their own:

• Check the organization. Is your child disorganized and constantly losing track of papers and homework? Is staying on top of assignments problematic? Does your child not use a planner no matter how much you suggest it? It is possible that your child is causing many of their own problems with poor organization and haphazard homework routines (e.g., relying too much on their memory to remember assignments and test dates). Make sure they fine-tune their organization skills.

• Evaluate the time management. Some students struggle with managing their time more than anything else. This could be due to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which causes struggles with focus, task completion, organization and staying on track while doing just about any activity. Check your child’s routine. Do they have one in place? Have you set expectations for what they must accomplish in the mornings and after school? Help your child become more efficient with better time management.

• Observe your child and pay close attention. You can learn a lot about what struggles your child is having by watching them do homework. Watch how your child operates. Is your child struggling with the work, staying on task, or both?

Which subjects take the longest and cause the most stress? If your child needs better homework habits, check out these homework strategies.

• Develop a game plan. Once you’ve gathered information and evaluated the problem on your own, it’s time to strategize about how to fix school issues too. Talk with your child’s teacher, or if you have an older student, encourage them to do so first. The teacher is an important resource who can share their observations of what’s happening in the classroom. They can work with your child to take appropriate action and can refer you to the right school resources if needed.

The new school year is just getting underway, but if you notice that your child seems to lack skills and knowledge they should have acquired in prior years, is getting poor grades already, is angry or apathetic about school, or has needs that are not being met, don’t wait to deal with these issues. Your child needs help getting back on track.

As we start the new school year, it is time to pack the beach towels and pack up the school supplies. A new school year has begun! Pembroke Lakes Elementary is excited to welcome our students back for another great year! Although our staff has been at work all summer ensuring our school year starts off right, our partnership with parents is a vital component to our success. Therefore, we’d like to offer 5 tips to assist our families with a successful start for the 2023/24 school year.

1. Set Goals. Have a conversation with your child about his/her strengths and weaknesses. Guide your child to set attainable goals and encourage him/her to persevere throughout the year. Frequently monitor progress toward the goals, celebrate successes, and reset new goals as needed.

2. Get Involved. Parent involvement is a critical component to your child’s success. Involvement can be as simple as checking your child’s agenda daily, reviewing flyers, and checked work on a weekly basis, and reading with your child nightly. Our Parent Teacher Association (PTA) hosts many evening school events. We love to see our families involved!

3. Provide learning resources at home. Provide books and magazines at your child’s level and ensure your child reads text at an appropriate level every day. Engage your child in authentic learning experiences such as cooking, gardening, and explorative nature walks that can reinforce math, science, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. Also, provide access to technology in order to support and complement the academic learning children are engaged in at school. Pembroke Lakes Elementary is proud to

be a Microsoft Showcase School, in recognition of being a global leader in successful integration of technology with teaching and learning.

4. Support school rules and goals. We need your help. Supporting school rules, discipline, procedures, curriculum, and goals contribute to a highly effective school. Parent input and participation in school rules and goals is always welcomed and valued.

5. Communicate. Talk to your child about their learning. Call or email your child’s teachers to address concerns or when you have questions. Your child’s teacher is your first line of communication. Communicating frequently with your child’s teacher demonstrates your commitment to your child’s education. Always feel free to contact school administration, support team members, or the Parent Teacher Association if you have questions or concerns. You can also visit our website at www.browardschools.com/pembrokelakes for updated information. We look forward to seeing you at school and if you’re a new Pembroke Lakes Pelican please introduce yourself. Pembroke Lakes Elementary, 11251 Taft Street Pembroke Pines 33026. (754) 323-6950.

A World of Knowledge Learning Center kicks off the new school year celebrating 20 years serving the young children in the communities of Pembroke Pines, Miramar and surrounding cities.

“For the past two decades, we have been blessed with the opportunity of seeing young children build a strong academic foundation through music and play. One of the main goals of the school is to embrace multiculturalism and help young children learn about the different cultures that make up our world. Our lessons truly bring the world to your child’s learning experience throughout the year in an exciting way.” says Elizabeth Gonzalez, Owner/Director of the school.

A World of Knowledge was a pioneer in introducing VPK to the community and one of the largest providers in Broward since the program’s inception in 2005. Between 100 - 150 students graduate from the program each year and enter Kindergarten with high reading and math levels. Principals and teachers in the surrounding public schools, highly recommend A World of Knowledge Learning Center because the students are prepared academically, socially and emotionally as they begin their elementary school journey.

For almost 20 years, the center under the direction of Elizabeth Gonzalez, has introduced the concepts of letters, sounds, and higher order critical thinking skills in a fun, interactive and engaging way for students starting at the age of one. The school is recognized by many parents and educators as #1 Choice for QUALITY in Early Learning and

has been named BEST PRESCHOOL in Pembroke Pines three years in a row. Our teachers are certified and experienced teachers who have a passion for teaching young children and helping them achieve their highest potential even at a young age.

“The BEST COMPLIMENT I can receive, comes from our parents, when they share success stories of their children in school, and attribute those successes to the foundation they received at A World of Knowledge.” said Ms. Gonzalez.

A World of Knowledge offers an accelerated learning program which allows children to explore everyday concepts at their pace, in a fun way allowing them to reach their higher potential. Children attending our PreK1-PreK4 program are engaged in numerous phonemic awareness activities that will help them achieve success in reading at a young age. Gonzalez proudly adds: “Our success with the children is based on our teaching styles, low child to teacher ratio, staff dedication and the unique multicultural themes and concepts which were created specifically for our school. Multicultural Awareness, Character education, values and etiquette are also essential components of our curriculum.”

Contact A World of Knowledge Learning Center and Preschool, and experience the difference for yourself as you tour the center. Call 954-430-7707 for more information. 750 NW 180 Terrace Pembroke Pines, Fl 33029.
