Dear Readers, I am hoping that all of you had a great first quarter of school and are getting into a comfortable routine as the holiday season approaches. As the most wonderful time of the year approaches, we have a great variety of community events happening in and around our city. Be sure to check out our calendar in the Event Directory for you and your family to enjoy as our weather cools down a bit. During the season of giving, we featured Harvest Drive in this issue, a wonderful way to teach our youth the significance and importance of giving to others in need including those who have fallen on less fortunate times. Harvest Drive is an amazing organization where 100% of the donations received goes towards feeding and clothing those in need in our neighboring communities within Broward County. Find distribution centers and items needed to continue the mission of the philanthropic Renee Herman to help the community. There are opportunities to donate, volunteer and get involved. This is a perfect way to give back and help others during the season of Thanksgiving. We are all happy to see and read about the great things that our students and teachers are accomplishing, from sports awards and academic accolades to community service. We are so proud of our Weston schools; they are simply the best. Don’t miss spending some quality time with your family at Movies in the Park and Weston Nights concerts. For fitness fanatics, be sure to read about and participate in the 25th Annual Rotary Run for Tomorrow, Get Fit Challenge and Safety Expo by our BSO starting in November. For those looking for some culture and entertainment, check out a few Weston Foreign Films, Arts Day, or enjoy some holiday performances and celebrations like Noche de Velitas and Gaitas y Vervenas. Registration is open now for Day off, Thanksgiving Break & Winter Break camps, and don’t forget to sign up for spring sports and activities. Also find our growing Hometown Professional Services and Family Health Directories, we have it all here! However you and your family celebrate the holidays, I wish you all the very best. Here’s to a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year ahead!

My best to you, Isabel

Dear Weston Residents,

10

PRODUCTIVITY AND BLESSINGS FOR A NEW YEAR! It has been an extremely productive year, including the passage of our fiscal year 2023 budget with no increase in the City millage rate while maintaining the same high-quality services that our residents desire. There have been many accomplishments in the last 12 months, including: Initiating the Parks Master Plan, Economic Development Existing Conditions Analysis, and Community Surveys; Initiated a WestonGov Academy; Received Financial Reporting Awards, Communication AND Park & Recreation Awards; EMS received reaccreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services; Conducted CPR demo onsite or virtual to over 300 residents; Provided bleeding control awareness training to over 1,600; Construction of four pickleball courts and resurfaced basketball courts at Regional, shade structures at Tequesta, tennis court lighting at Emerald Estates and a new skate park at Tequesta Trace, and two batting cages at Vista Park; The Building Department achieved a Class 2 rating from the Insurance Services Office, Inc. for commercial properties and a Class 3 rating for residential properties; Fire Services completed 100% of commercial & multi-family fire safety inspections, provided fire safety education to 8,305 people through events. We initiated Surtax Funded projects including bike lanes pavement markings, Meridian Business Campus sidewalk repairs and maintenance, Indian Trace Road improvements design, Weston Road bike and pedestrian improvements design and bicycle wayfinding signage, Royal Palm Boulevard & Weston Road intersection improvements and Sailboat Circle drainage improvements. It was a busy and successful year. In November, almost 200 public and private schools will participate in the Annual Harvest Drive that was initiated 30 years ago by local volunteers, with Country Isles Elementary School as the original distribution site. Harvest Drive provides a complete Thanksgiving meal and a weeks-worth of grocery and personal necessities to over 2,400 food insecure families in Broward County. Please do what you can to help children help other children, so no child goes hungry. Visit Harvestdriveflorida.com. As winter bestows upon Florida the weather we have all been waiting for, our events season this year moves into full swing. The City, in conjunction with the Arts Council of Greater Weston, offers fun events for families. These include monthly Moonlight Movies in the Park, magician and puppet shows at the Weston Community Center for children, Symphony concerts - both ticketed and free, a Foreign Film Series, the free WestonNights Outdoor Concert series, the Winter Safety Expo, Celebrate the Arts, Weston World Fest, the Royal Egg Hunt, and more. I also look forward to seeing all Weston elementary students at the Commission Cup 1-Mile Health Walk on December 4th. Please look for details of these and other events on our website at WestonFL.org/Events. For the holidays, we stress vigilance to not leave valuables in sight in vehicles, and to always lock car doors and take your key fob with you. Weston is a safe community, but whether you are running into the gym, dropping a child at day care, or pumping gas, remember to – Lock it, Don’t Lose it. Lastly, with every New Year comes a renewed sense of spirit, hope, and commitment. On behalf of the entire City Commission and staff, we wish you and your families a safe, happy, and healthy holiday season and New Year. Be Safe and Have Fun!

EVENTS • Be aware of your surroundings and park in well-lit areas. • Always keep your vehicle locked. Do not store any shopping bags in your vehicle, in between your trips. Thieves are watching mall parking lots and shopping plazas for shoppers that place their purchased merchandise inside their vehicles, before heading to their next location. If possible, bring your shopping bags with you or drop them off at home, before heading out again. • Avoid wearing expensive jewelry and carrying large amounts of cash and multiple credit cards; only carry what is necessary! • Stay alert. Have your keys in your hand when returning back to your vehicle. • Conduct online transactions in a safe place. HOLIDAY CYBERSECURITY TIPS

• Only shop from secure websites and mobile apps that you already know and trust. Do not be tempted by advertisements on social media or emails offering amazing and unbelievable deals. Criminals send emails and place ads hoping that you’ll be enticed by the promise of saving money or obtaining the “must-have” item of the year. • Avoid clicking on links even if an email or advertisement looks like it is coming from a site you trust. Cyber criminals love to impersonate your favorite shopping sites by sending you fake emails that can look exactly like the real thing. Criminals are hoping that their fake emails will trick you into clicking the link. Clicking these links can allow them to download malware to your computer or may direct you to a fake page that will try to collect your login information or payment details. • Watch out for fake delivery notification emails and/ or text messages. Criminals are banking on the fact that you are going to be expecting more package deliveries during this time of year. If you’ve ordered something, use the tracking link on your order history page from the website you purchased the items from. If you received a delivery notification, but are not expecting

LEAVING TOWN?

• Remember to lock your doors, gates, windows and storage sheds. • Use timers to operate lights at night. • Put a hold on your mail, newspapers and package deliveries. Consider having a trusted friend or neighbor stop by to collect these items. Having a full mailbox is a dead giveaway that you are not home. • If possible, leave a vehicle in your driveway. Have a neighbor park his or her vehicle there to give burglars the impression that someone is home. • Keep a low profile on social media while you’re away. Do not post or broadcast that you are on vacation or away from your home, on any social media sites. • Did you know that our BSO Weston District offers our residents a free Vacation Home Watch Program? Our BSO Weston deputies will drive by your residence and perform a daily perimeter check for any signs of break-in or suspicious activity while you are out of town. Visit the BSO Weston District office for a form or download one at www.westonfl.org/. For more information, call (954) 389-2010.

SHOPPING TIPS

a delivery, navigate to the parcel service’s website directly and enter the tracking number from the suspect email into their online package tracking form. • Monitor your bank and card activity diligently. Sometimes, no matter how careful we are, we can still become victims. Always check your statements for unauthorized transactions. t the heart of Cypress Bay DECA, a co-curricular that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management, students Carolina Corcino, Charles Barnett, and Nicole Chen initiated an innovative project to benefit upcoming college students at The Bay: Common Cents. Dedicated to Cultivate, Expand, Navigate, Teach, and Solve, the project prepares high school juniors and seniors to face the realities of financial situations that they will face in their adulthood. High schoolers, who are closest to becoming independent as they will soon venture through college, must have the ability to manage money responsibly. While The Bay has recently made the Personal Financial Literacy course a requirement for sophomores, many juniors and seniors who cannot enroll in the class have little to no knowledge on this topic. Carolina Corcino, one of the project leaders, shared, “Students in financial literacy courses and those that didn’t get the opportunity to take the course should have equal access to financial literacy education to allow them to be financially responsible and successful in their future.” Common Cents has already done plenty for the school’s chapter. Working alongside the University of Pennsylvania and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the team

It’s almost here!!!!

The Sagemont School’s Pride Rock Cafe will reopen its onsite location soon. Sagemont students are ready for the full reopening of the newly renovated campus café, which will rival any coffee shop around. Sagemont’s Pride Rock Cafe is a student-run café on campus. When alumni Amanda Correa, Jonathan Medina, and Maggie Roach along with the support of their Principles of Entrepreneurship teacher, Mr. Jarvis Brown, drafted a business plan, they had aspirations of creating a unique space for Sagemont students and they did just that. With a loan from the school administrators, our young entrepreneurs opened the campus café in 2018. This would prove to be the breakfast and lunch destination for Sagemont students to join together. Pride Rock Café is a space that is filled with music, buzzing conversation, and camaraderie. Over the years, Sagemont has watched its high school entrepreneurship program blossom and create a foundation for many students. With this in mind, Sagemont expanded its entrepreneurial program to include Preschool through 12th grade. With Sagemont’s new curriculum expansion and focus on entrepreneurship, it was only fitting to also renovate the student-run coffee shop. Sagemont’s student cafe has been under construction since October and in a few weeks, the cafe will reopen its doors to a truly remarkable space for our budding entrepreneurs. The newly renovated

has been able to create workshops and seminars to educate students on ways that they manage their assets in the most efficient and effective ways. “We began with three workshops hosted by the University of Pennsylvania in April of the last school year,” project leader Charles Barnett said. “This year, we are continuing our workshops in1 October, focusing on the principles of investing and budgeting basics.” However, not only are they ensuring that students are learning, but they are also guaranteeing that whatever information attendees receive, they are able to apply. To do this, the team incorporated case study challenges, which, according to project leader Nicole Chen, “[Case Study Challenges] give a brief scenario and allow students to implement what they have learned into realistic situations.” The result is in the numbers: an average 63 percent score on knowledge of financial literacy information raised to 83 percent, and this statistic is only expected to grow. As the school year progresses, Common Cents continues its path further into greatness. As the group continues to make history and prepare students for the future, you can follow their journey on DECA’s Instagram page: @decacbhs. cafe will feature student-commissioned artwork, music, state-of-the-art technology, and so much more. At its core, Sagemont’s student-driven cafe will continue to be a hub for educating budding entrepreneurs. Sagemont’s renovated hub for entrepreneurship continues under the faculty leadership of Mr. Jarvis Brown and is currently managed by 11th grader Alexa Frances and an amazing group of middle and high school students who staff the cafe daily. Entrepreneurs are curious individuals. The Sagemont School is focused on creating an academic environment that encourages students to observe and question the world around them. Observations and inquiry are the cornerstones of academic prowess and entrepreneurship. The fundamental characteristics and skills that are needed to be a successful entrepreneur are the same for being successful in life As part of Sagemont’s entrepreneurial experience, students learn how production, marketing, finance, human resources, global competition, social, environmental, and legal issues affect business decisions. Learning how to think and question is at the summit of higher-order and critical thinking. Entrepreneurship teaches self-confidence, problem-solving, creativity, goal-setting, empathy, leadership, grit, and commitment. magine walking into a classroom and hearing the hustle and bustle of students discussing academic content and engaging in hands-on activities to make connections…one day entirely in Spanish and the next day entirely in English! Students in Kindergarten dual language learn and are introduced to the languages through song and movement. Students in first grade dual language are partnered after a read-aloud and learn turn-taking strategies in two languages. Students in second grade dual language take part in the yearly Living Wax Museum where they transform into a historic immigrant and present their findings in both languages to an audience. Students in third grade dual language complete a bilingual interconnected project researching a specific region and state of the United States. Students in fourth grade dual language learn to make lemons out of lemonade to set the tone for the school year. Students in fifth grade dual language engage in hands-on science experiments in both languages to make their science content come alive! This is just a small glimpse into the Dual Language program at Gator Run Elementary! Our program is in its eighth year and spans from Kindergarten to Fifth grade, with a Spanish side and an English side teacher in each grade level. Children are immersed in the two languages with the ultimate goal of becoming bilingual, biliterate and bicultural. The program is designed to prepare students to become global citizens through the use of academic standards and sociocultural competence in two languages. The main focus is to teach academic standards in a way that is both engaging, rigorous and culturally

n a joint effort of support, Manatee Bay Elementary and Project Stable 4-H Members collected and delivered emergency supplies to the West Coast of Florida’s hardest hit areas: St. James and Matlacha Isles. Manatee Bay’s students and staff collected hundreds of emergency relief items (water, nonperishable foods, flashlights, batteries, diapers, wipes, etc.). The Hawes Family from Project Stable 4-H, worked with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Matlacha Isles Fire Station to deliver the items directly

relevant through the two languages. One of the most important ways in which this is done at Gator Run Elementary is through the use of teacher collaboration – both teachers in the partnership need to work cohesively in order to tackle the standards in a way that is organized and fluid between the two classrooms. Our students are also engaged in opportunities to engage in the target language in meaningful ways beyond the classroom. Year after year our students take part in our school’s Multicultural Festival to perform bilingual songs and dances to showcase the pride our students feel being part of this program. Our students have taken part in dual language field trips, including a bilingual in-house DOME experience, a visit to the Perez Art Museum and a trip to the Juana la Iguana musical show. Our dual language program even has some upcoming exciting events for this school year including field trips to the Cox Science Center and Aquarium, fundraisers at local restaurants and a Spring Spanish Book Fair at our school! While our program continues to evolve, there is a consistent emphasis on the importance of meaningful experiences that allow the students to apply what they’ve learned through two languages. We take pride in fostering engaging experiences that help build our community of learners and foster a love of bilingualism and biliteracy at Gator Run Elementary. to the barrier islands. The Manatee Bay Elementary community worked quickly in donating Hurricane Ian relief supplies to help our neighbors on the West Coast in hopes of helping them make it through this catastrophic and life-changing event. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the West Coast of Florida. Manatee Bay Elementary School, Heather HedmanDevaughn Principal, 19200 Manatee Bay Elementary School, (754)323-6450.

place at Tequesta Trace Middle School. The Cougars have shifted into a new block schedule where students will experience a “Maroon Day” and a “Gray Day” which will better prepare students for when they transition into high school. Students will have approximately 85 minutes in each class, and they will have four classes per day totaling to eight classes in all. This allows for students at the Trace to take a larger variety of electives, highlighting their passions and interests. In addition to Tequesta Trace rolling out the block schedule, a few new electives have been created. One of the most popular new electives is Marine Science. Students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves into the study of marine life and organisms and discover the world below the surface. There are a number of fun and engaging field trips in the works for students enrolled in this course. Some of the possibilities include snorkeling, a visit to the Frost Museum, and potentially experiencing shark tagging. Another great course added to Tequesta Trace is Forensic Science. Students are experiencing hands on activities and labs that showcase matters of science as they relate to criminal and civil law. Other electives offered at Tequesta Trace include Robotics, Film, Creative Media, Speech & Debate, Spanish I/II, Broadcasting, Latinos in Action,

Chess, Fantasy Fiction, Drama, Art, and Peer Counseling – just to name a few. Block scheduling is allowing Tequesta to bring more high interest courses to the schedule that appeal to the students and their potential future endeavors. The positivity does not stop there. The Tequesta Trace gym has received a makeover. New gym floors were installed over the summer. These floors are “bounce back” floors, making maneuvering on the floor more comfortable for athletes and students. The decals on the new floor highlight the Tequesta school spirit and capture the essence of the Mighty Cougars. As the year goes on, athletes playing volleyball and basketball will get to break in the new court flooring. Over the last few years, Tequesta Trace has been making major improvements to the school campus. A variety of murals have been painted throughout to add a touch of brightness, new carpet and paint has been completed to spruce up the media center in order to help make the space more inviting to students, new landscaping has been added by the PTA, and an outdoor classroom with bench seating and a chalk board has been added under a large shady tree. Currently, a new roof is being installed across the campus. More things are sure to come to Tequesta Trace Middle School, because it is true when they say that, “There’s no place like the Trace!” Tequesta Trace Middle School, Robert Rivera Principal, 1800 Indian Trace, Weston FL 33326.

TUTORING SERVICES KUMON MATH AND READING CENTER Weston-Saddle Club Road. Kumon is the best learning program ever developed, and very different from your child’s regular school experience because of 4 pillars that guide us with each student: 1. individually designed learning; 2. learning challenges that advance exactly in line with your student’s timing; 3. learning by doing, not listening; 4. instructors who support, students who think. Consider how different these pillars are from the passive experience your child has in a class of 30 students. Your child’s special gifts and talents, and even your child’s individual needs, can get lost in a class of 30. But not at Kumon!! That’s why Kumon is cherished in almost 60 countries. And why it consistently generates accelerated learning for students from any starting point, to beyond class-level! The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. Please stop by and visit us! Schedule a free, no-obligation evaluation.
