Dear Readers, Hello Spring! We are ready for you and all the magic you bring to this world! New growth, fresh blossoms, births and mother nature at its finest, showing us that no matter how long you have to hibernate and endure the dormancy of winter, we all reemerge stronger, rested and ready for whatever comes our way! Spring Break and Summer Camp registrations are happening now! It’s the perfect opportunity to encourage your children to try new things, hone new skills and challenge themselves in different ways. You never know what hidden talent or passion will present itself in your children unless they have the opportunity to explore and try new things. It’s also the perfect time of year to challenge yourselves with new things…golf, pickle ball, volunteering, coaching, workout groups, or continuing education to take care of your own mental, physical and emotional health. Parents often spend so much time, money and energy on those they care for that they forget about themselves. At first glance, you may see our directory only as a resource for youth sports, but we are so much more…flip through our pages and watch your interests peak with new discoveries, programs and possibilities! Whether it’s a new sport, activity or club, children who are involved have proven to have a better success rate in school than those who don’t participate. Overall, students’ GPAs, test scores, attendance and graduation rates, and college acceptances are so much greater when they are engaged in their school and extracurricular activities. Take some time with your children and consider the many options in our directory for involvement in the community, schools, sports, activities and camps. It’s a win-win for everyone. As you may know, we simply can’t do what we do without our advertisers and our readers. Our advertisers & Issue Sponsor fuel our company and the readers’ support of our advertisers fuel those businesses. A special thank you to our Issue sponsor Intensity Gymnastics & thank you all for your support through these trying times, we are working hard to keep this valuable publication in your hands! My best to you,

Kim Kadel Publisher

Dear Parkland Residents,

8

The start of a New Year carries with it promise of good things and new beginnings. In a psychological turning of the mental calendar, we seek to do our part to contribute to that new beginning by making promises to ourselves. But as you turn the page of your calendar, whether your psychological calendar or the one on your refrigerator, my hope for you is more than just a New Year’s resolution that may or may not be forgotten by March. My wife Catherine and I have five beautiful children and raising them, more than anything else we will ever do, will be our imprint on the world. No matter how long I serve as Mayor, no matter the successes Catherine and I achieve personally or in our careers, raising our children will be our legacy. And while from time-to-time I may confuse their names, one thing my kids never let me forget is that they are always listening. There are plenty of teaching moments when we focus on providing a lesson to our children and we make sure they are listening, but I always find it interesting when one of them repeats something that Catherine or I have said when we didn’t know they were listening. And now we realize they’re always listening—which means we are always teaching. February marks the four-year anniversary of the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School... when 17 wonderful souls were murdered, 17 more were physically injured, and countless have been mentally and emotionally impacted forever. We must never forget the 17 murdered as their lives were ended much too soon. Each victim had their own story and tremendous potential. So many of the families of the victims continue to honor their memories by working hard in so many areas. positively helping others with scholarships, mental wellness, and changes to laws that will forever help keep other loved ones safe. We are in this together and we can only make our world a better and safer place by working together. It amazes me how simple dialogue has become so divisive. The mentality of “you are either with me or against me” needs to come to a halt. We all come from different places, we all have different backgrounds, and we offer valuable unique perspectives. That is a profoundly positive foundation from which to work— the collaboration of different perspectives is precisely what creates the basis upon which a powerful idea and movement is born. We have so much going on in our City with amazing upgrades to our Parks, a new logo coming later this year (listen for upcoming details), fantastic programs throughout our City. We are always listening and looking for new ways to engage our residents. Our CO-ED Adult softball league is a perfect example. The residents were asking for new adult programs and our Parks and Rec Department came through with an amazing new league for adults. Our Softball league started late last year with six teams to start and this season it is now up to 11. This is a great way for our residents to engage with one another. Thank you for reading. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@cityofparkland.org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. Of course I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to talk with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website cityofparkland.org and click on the social media icon that you prefer, to ensure you stay informed on events and helpful information. Your Parkland Mayor,

Rich Walker

Dear Coral Springs Residents,

I hope your New Year has gotten off to a good and healthy start. Personally, Brenda and I were blessed with our fourth grandson, Jack Walter! So, our New Year is off to a great start. With the new year, we have new beginnings and new possibilities. I know many people have been affected negatively by Covid and its variations. I am grateful to our City professionals for taking such a proactive approach throughout the last two years and for keeping our community as open and safe as possible! I am sure you can see the progress that is being made with the Cornerstone Development of our Downtown. It is great to see from my Fifth floor window on a regular basis. I am hosting in-person meetings at City Hall and would love to hear from you. In order to schedule an appointment, please call my Executive Assistant, Luwam Ghermay, at 954-344-5906. Our City received a great recognition in January. MoneyGeek, a personal finance technology company, analyzed crime statistics in nearly 300 cities with populations over 100,000 to find the safest cities in America. Our City came in as the the 13th safest city in America! I have loved raising all five of our children here and have them all feel and be safe, thanks to our wonderful Police Department! We have so many great assets in our community from the people to the parks, from the First Responders to all of the volunteers! We also have many great businesses that call Coral Springs home! Please join us as we celebrate our local businesses regularly by posting on social media with #ShopCs. Our Economic Development Department has been very active and we have a strong Economic Development Advisory Committee that I am very grateful for. We will be recognizing various businesses very soon for our annual Business Excellence Awards. BY the time you read this, all of the nominations will be in, but I would be happy to consider a unique recognition of a business or business owner in the future, if you email me at SBrook@coralsprings.org. Our City has developed an incentive program to provide financial support to various businesses. In order to encourage business and property owners to rehabilitate, renovate or improve their property, the City Commission approved an Incentive Program designed to significantly improve the appearance of exteriors of commercial properties within the City of Coral Springs. These grants are available to all office, retail, manufacturing, and industrial property owners. Learn more on our website at www.coralsprings.org. The last news I would like to share is concerning Work-based learning. The City of Coral Springs wishes to collaborate with educational institutions and local businesses to create high-quality internship and workbased learning experiences for both businesses and students. If you are interested in getting involved, email kbartlett@coralsprings.org. It is an incredible honor to serve as your Mayor and I am happy to take your calls and texts at 954-494-9872. Your Friendly Mayor,

Scott J. Brook

Mayor of Coral Springs

WARNING SIGNS:

Sometimes you don’t know there’s a problem until you face a financial crisis. But red flags that should make you suspicious your partner is committing financial infidelity include: • Your spouse consistently changes the subject or becomes argumentative when you bring up money concerns. • He or she wants sole control of your finances or insists on keeping financial accounts/ passwords secret. • You uncover hidden cash either in your home or in a bank account that you didn’t know about, or you discover new credit cards or lines of credit opened in your partner’s name. • You spot unexpected suspicious withdrawals from investment or other accounts. If you have reason to believe that your partner is concealing assets or moving

money into hidden accounts, it is wise to seek the advice of a forensic accountant and/ or a financial advisor. However, before hiring a professional, attempt an open, honest conversation with your partner about money. Then build a plan that suits your situation.

TIPS FOR FINANCIAL COMMUNICATION: • • • •

Be transparent about any money owed. Solve problems early enough so they do not worsen. Set a regular time (weekly, monthly, quarterly) to discuss the family finances. Both partners should be involved in paying household bills, as this creates checks and balances. • Limit or eliminate individual accounts (bank, credit, etc.) and make them joint. • Agree on an amount over which (i.e., $250), there is an automatic discussion before the expenditure. • Agree that all online account access may be shared by both partners. • If you cannot come to an agreement Identify a neutral third party—a financial planner, pastor, or therapist—who can help you work it out and begin to rebuild trust. W

e are aware of the effects marital infidelity may have on a relationship. There is also another form of deception that causes irreparable harm: Financial Infidelity, a form of financial deception that can wreck relationships. This is when one partner believes there is open and honest communication about household finances, and the other is being deceptive about it. Two-thirds of adults in relationships combine finances with their partner, according to a January 2016 Harris Poll from the National Endowment for Financial Education. Of those, 42% admitted they have committed financial infidelity, compared to 31% in 2011. The study also found that 70% of women and 63% of men agreed that being honest about money was as important as being monogamous. Certainly, misrepresenting how much you spend on shoes or golf may not be considered a significant betrayal. However, a long-term pattern of being deceptive about money may signal deeper rifts, and may be damaging, nonetheless. Financial infidelity may or may not be perceived as unseemly as “cheating,” but both actions have something in common: They both involve secrets and lies, and can ultimately devastate a relationship.

Top 5 Reasons To Hire A Professional Tax Preparer “T

oday’s tax laws are complex, burdensome and continually changing,” says Bruce Weinberg, Florida Managing Partner of Weinberg and Company, P.A. Tax forms can be tedious and often times very confusing. Having an accountant who is experienced in tax matters can help ensure that all of your information remains organized, the correct paperwork gets filed, and that you never fall behind. Bruce is often asked what are the benefits to hiring a professional tax preparer. His firm has provided us with five top reasons you should hire a professional tax preparer: 1. It takes the hassle out of doing it yourself. 2. You don’t have to keep up with the many tax law changes or understand complicated tax law. 3. Making mistakes can be very costly. 4. Your time is worth money. 5. A tax professional is educated on the many tax credits that are available to

businesses and individuals. You never want to miss out on any of these. In addition to doing your taxes for you, professional accountants can guide you and give advice on any financial-related matters or decisions. They become a trusted and valued part of your business and finance team. Beyond tax season, professional accountants can help you cut costs and operate more efficiently to help you save more of your money, now and in the future. For more information on hiring a professional tax preparer, feel free to contact Bruce Weinberg at (561) 487-5765 or visit www.cpaweinberg.com.

SPECIAL POPULATION PROGRAMS CHALLENGER LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL Challenger Baseball started in Broward County in 1990. The Challenger program is open to children with any disability. Thanks to the help of coaches, assistant coaches and “buddies”, all our players get to hit, field and get around the bases. Challenger is a non-competitive environment with the goal of all our players getting a chance to be part of a team sport and having a great time. Thanks to private sponsors our program is no cost to the families involved. We provide uniforms, equipment, pictures, trophies, a day at a Marlins game, a weekend in Ft Myers playing other Challenger teams, a year end picnic for all the families and more. Again, all these activities are provided at no charge. Although our target age group is 5–22 years old, many of our players are older as they have been in our program since the early years. Therefore, we now have a junior division from 5/12 years old and a senior division of 13+. Our games are Sunday afternoons at 3:30pm – 5:15pm from March- May. T

he New Year is a chance to reflect on the past and to make changes to the future. What better way than preparing your family for the inevitable, “Old Age and Death.” These words are feared from among the strongest and or richest person to the poorest and or weakest individual. We all share this common fact, that one day we will age and no longer be here. With this said, why not put on the top of our New Year’s Resolution List, “Get a Will or Trust prepared and make the process easier on your family. What is a will? A will is a written document, signed and witnessed, which sets out instructions for the disposition of your estate only at the time of or after the event of your death. What is a trust? A trust is a set of instructions which come into effect as soon as the trust is created which means that it provides property management during your life and/or after your death. My best comparison is a trust is almost like a company, one you manage while your alive, and if your become incapacitated or die, it can be managed by your successors according to your instructions. Differences between a will and a trust: Apart from the main difference that a will comes into effect only after death whereas a trust is in effect during lifetime and after death, there are many more things to think about when deciding between the two estate planning tools. Here is a list of some of the more significant differences which a trust attorney can explain in further detail: • A will and the property in the will is subject to the probate process; a trust and assets in the trust are not subject to the probate process. However, assets in both plans may be subject to federal estate tax.

• Because a trust does not go through the probate process it may remain a private affair; a will goes through probate and therefore it becomes accessible to the public. • A will allows you to assign a guardian for your minor children; a trust allows you to control when and how your minor children, grandchildren and other dependents access your trust assets. • Often, the costs to set up and manage a trust can be much higher than setting up a will. • The assets in a will do not need to be managed; a trust can only plan for assets which have actively been transferred into the trust, therefore the assets in a trust need to be actively managed. • The actions of a trustee are not usually overseen by a court; the actions of an executor of a will are court supervised through the probate process. • Because a will is only effective after death, it does not allow for instances where the person becomes incapacitated through injury or illness or old age; a trust provides a plan for the possibility of incapacity. So, which is better for your family? Obviously both have their pros and their cons and if this breakdown of wills and trusts cannot help you decide which plan you should use, a qualified and knowledgeable trust attorney will be able to point you in the right direction and help you put together a comprehensive estate plan.

To Do in 2022 (For your kids & possibly you too!) Dr. Olivia Carelli & Dr. David Yudell

L

et me start by promising no more rhyming. 1) Monitor electronic and screen usage. All devices these days have a usage clock. But how can we put a limit on socialization? Or online schooling? Our children rely on their devices for everything. If you find that your child seems to always be on electronics, start by sharing your concerns with them. From there, you can place some reasonable limits. One suggestion that can be implemented is a 1 for 1 (or 2 for 2) usage timer. For every hour of use, enforce the same amount of time off of electronics before they can return. If they spend two hours on their computer, they need to then spend two hours outside, playing with legos, or completing a puzzle before returning. 2) Spend more time with your children. It is easy to get caught up in day-to-day responsibilities of adulthood. However, there’s nothing more important to provide our child with than consistent attention. Spending time with your children can build their self-esteem and even improve their academic performance. Studies also show that “special time” will decrease behavioral and substance use issues for our children. As many parents know, children grow quickly and may even seem different day-to-day. Cherish the moments! 3) Help your children be present-focused. For those of you with older children, help them to focus on the here and now. Our high school aged children face immense pressure. College is always on their mind in addition to fitting into social hierarchies and living up to peer expectations. For our college-aged children, the focus on career and future is realistic. However, we need to help them remember that there is not rush in building their happiness and success. Anxiety is typically a future-oriented emotion. We can help our kids manage anxiety by teaching them to focus on what they have power over in the present moment.

4) Help your children connect with nature. Nature provides countless opportunities for discovery, creativity, and problem solving. There are many studies regarding the benefits of nature which include stress relief, improved short-term memory, improved concentration, creativity, and improved overall mental health. Interestingly, one study showed that when compared to kids who were relatively indifferent, adolescents who rated their connection with nature as “important” had a 25% reduction in stress-related symptoms. Exposure to nature at an early age also helps children build appreciation and respect for the environment. 5) Normalize talking about emotions. We can help children develop emotional awareness by giving them the vocabulary they need. We all know the typical, expected mundane response to “How was school today?” is “good.” Try more pointed questions such as “How did you feel during your math test?,” or “What parts of today were the hardest?” You can also lead by example by disclosing your own emotions. For example “I’m feeling pretty sad after that movie. How do you feel?” 6) Model healthy emotions for your children. Kids learn to self-soothe and display healthy emotions by watching us and modeling. It’s okay for your kid to see you cry, open up to others, and get upset at your partner. In fact, healthy arguments can be better than the absence of any discord. Children pick up on what conversations look like when adults don’t agree on something and mimic that behavior in their own arguments. Hopefully, we can model staying calm and respectful during difficult conversations. For further information and support please contact us at 954-288-9393 or email DrYudell@DrYudell.com.
