LADY SALESPRO INC. Sports & Activities Directory Pines

Dear Readers,

May 14th is Mother’s Day and I want to wish all the mom’s out there a Happy Mother’s Day. Since it’s your special day I hope you get treated like a Queen.

As the end of another school year is approaching, I hope your children had a great year of learning, fun, friendship and had new adventures. Our Pembroke Pines teachers and administrators work very hard to teach our children, get them involved and keep them safe. When you think about it, teachers spend more time with our kids than we do. Let’s remember to say Thank You.

I’m a big believer in giving our educators a handwritten note or card to show our appreciation. Not many people write Thank You notes anymore, which makes it even more special. Whatever way you say Thank You is up to you and I’m sure it will be appreciated.

This issue focuses on a bevy of awesome Summer Camps. You will find both weekly camps and day camps. Hopefully there’s a camp that piques your child’s interest. This is also a great way to have your child try something new, whether it’s a sport or an activity. We have camps for fishing, dance, karate, chess, swimming, soccer, tennis and many more. There’s something for everyone! Summer camp provides a great way to create fun memories and make new friends, while keeping children’s minds, bodies, and spirits active and alive. Don’t forget to tell whatever camp you decide on sending your child to that you saw their ad in Sports & Activities Directory.

Also, make sure to check out our Events section for a list of all the events happening in Pembroke Pines in May-Mid August. You don’t want to miss out on any of the great events our city will be putting on. One of the things is SUMMER FILM FEST 2023. The city will be showing free movies beginning Saturday June 17th –Saturday, August 5th. There are also concerts, sporting events and much more! Thank you for your continued readership and patronage to our clients. We appreciate you and look forward to seeing you around town. I hope you have a wonderful summer, filled with family time and great memories!

In closing, I would also like to say Happy Father’s Day to all the dads. I hope you get treated like a King on your special day.

All my best to you, Linda

Dear Readers,

As we begin entering the summer months and thoughts move towards todo lists that have been put off during the holidays and first months of the year, it’s important to know what projects need or don’t need permits to proceed. I thought now would be a good time to share some helpful information. A building permit is required to construct, enlarge, alter, move, remove, or demolish, any building, structure or any part thereof. Typical household projects which require a building permit include, but are not limited to the installation of pools, screen enclosures, sheds, fences, carports, driveways, patios, plumbing (new and existing), electrical (new and existing), water heaters, toilets or replacement of air conditioning units. Exterior home repairs such as the replacement of windows, doors, siding, or a new roof require building permits as well.

Obtaining a building permit is the first step required to start work on a project. Following the permit process allows experienced personnel to ensure a project meets the established code and safety requirements. It also provides peace of mind for homeowners, as licenses and insurance are verified for the selected contractor before work begins. While the work is being done, a building permit guarantees oversight of the contractor’s work while following Florida Building Code. Please note that working without a permit may result in code violations or potential fines. Trying to obtain an after the fact building permit may be challenging and could result in increased permit fees. Failure to attain proper building permits may also impact insurance coverage for your home and ultimately affect the ability for you to sell your home in the future.

The City of Pembroke Pines Building Department enforces the Florida Building Code, 7th Edition (2020) and related regulations. A permit is typically not required for general maintenance of a home such as painting or resurfacing a floor. If there are any doubts as to whether a permit might be required for work within your home, please contact the City of Pembroke Pines Building Department at 954-435-6502 before you begin the job or visit: https://www.ppines.com/164/Building-Department.

On a more fun note, the Mayor’s Annual Chess Challenge is being held on Saturday, May 13, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Pembroke Lakes Golf Club 19 Restaurant, located at 10500 Taft Street. This is the last chess challenge being held throughout Broward County as part of a free and friendly series of chess meet-ups in over 19 different cities created to draw attention to the benefits of chess in both the academic environment and in our community. For more information, please visit www.ppines.com/specialevents.

And, all are invited to our Memorial Day Observance on Monday, May 29, 2023, to honor our country’s men and women who have died in the military. It will begin at 9 a.m. at Fletcher Park, located at 7900 Johnson Street. For more information, please visit the city’s website at www.ppines.com.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com.

From your Mayor,

Pembroke Pines Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 74 | MayMid August 2023 11 AROUND TOWN

After last year’s devastating Hurricanes Ian and Nicole, we all saw the power and destruction that could be looming around the corner. Living in Florida, it’s so important that you’re prepared BEFORE disaster strikes. Would you know what to do if a hurricane hit your area? Who would you call? Where would you go? What would you do? If your home suffers storm damage, chances are the first call you would think of making is your insurance company. Well, the first call you should make is to us, a licensed Public Insurance Adjuster.

Many people simply aren’t familiar with what Public Insurance Adjusters are or what they do. Public Insurance Adjusters are state licensed and bonded professionals, and we work for you, the policyholder, not the insurance company. We advocate for your rights, and make sure that you get exactly what you are entitled to. As experts on property loss, we assist you through the entire process. We will review your policy, file a claim, and handle all dealings with the insurance company from A-Z, so you don’t have to worry about it. We will negotiate a settlement that is fair and suits your needs. We can even reopen claims that were unfairly denied or underpaid in the past. A Public Insurance Adjuster can make a big difference in the settlement of your claim, increasing the recovery by up to 700%!

Do you know how to read your insurance policy? Do you know exactly what your policy covers? Most people don’t, because the insurance carriers fill their policies with jargon to confuse and frustrate, hoping you’ll just pay your premiums without really understanding what you’re entitled to. With a Public Insurance Adjuster on your side, you can make sure that you’re not being taken advantage of. Helping the public navigate the complicated landscape of insurance is our biggest goal. We want you to be an informed homeowner and be able to make the best decisions for you and your family. Even if we don’t feel our service is a good fit for your claim, we will offer as much advice and knowledge as we can pro bono. We also offer free policy reviews, so you can better understand the coverages you have before you need to use them. Your home is likely the most important

and valuable asset you own, and you need someone on your side who is going to protect it.

Our process starts with a free inspection of your home or business, after which we will let you know if we feel our services will benefit you. Our pledge to you is that if we do not believe our involvement in your claim will make a difference, we will tell you up front. Our inspections are free, so it’s best to call us and let us see how you can maximize your claim.

A question we get asked a lot is how much does it cost? To start, there is no cost for the consultation at your property and we work on a contingency fee basis, which means NO RECOVERY, NO FEE. We only get paid when you get paid, there is no upfront cost. After the claim is settled, we get a small percentage of the recovery.

Many people also worry that if they hire a Public Insurance Adjuster their claim will be denied, or their policy will be canceled. ABSOLUTELY NOT! Notions like that are a scare tactic the insurance company propagates in order to keep you from knowing the full extent of your rights. Public Insurance Adjusters are licensed and insured agents of the state. The profession is protected by the State Legislature and regulated by the Department of Insurance. It would be a violation of your rights if any insurance company denies or cancels you based on hiring a Public Insurance Adjuster.

You can use a Public Insurance Adjuster for any type of damage, not only just hurricanes. Damage such as Air Conditioning Leaks, Broken Pipes, Dishwasher Leaks, Fire Damage, Floods, Loss by Collapse, Mold Damage, Roof Leaks, Sinkholes, Smoke Damage, Theft, Vandalism, Water Damage, Wind Damage, Business Interruption and Electrical Surge, are all typically covered perils which we can assist with.

You wouldn’t go to court without a lawyer, why deal with your insurance company without a Public Insurance Adjuster! Let us defend your rights and make sure you get what you’re owed! Call us for your FREE INSPECTION! 24 Hour Emergency Service. Claimsproconsulting.com. License #W697413. (954) 394-4791.

On March 10, 2023, the Relay for Life Pembroke Pines Miramar held their 25th Relay-Versary Event at the City of Pembroke Pines Charter High School Athletic Field. The event featured a Survivor/Caregiver Dinner, which featured close to 40 participating restaurants. Afterwards, the opening ceremony welcomed survivors, caregivers, sponsors, family, and friends to the event. The presentation of colors was done by the Pembroke Pines Honor Guard and the anthem was sung by Arianna Hudson. Several checks from the title sponsors were presented to the American Cancer Society. We would like to thank the City of Pembroke Pines, City of Miramar, Memorial Cancer Institute, and the Kazma Family Foundation for their efforts to support the relay with their generous donations. Shortly after, sashing and medals were distributed to the survivors and caregivers, who were then welcomed on the field by the FSU Charter School Drumline and Dancers and the West Pines Lady Panther Cheerleaders. Over 2400 family and friends participated in walking and fundraising during the evening. Performances filled the stage as

well as activities that kept the crowd motivated and fundraising while having a great time. Later on, the lights were dimmed, torches lit, and Luminaria bags filled the field with illuminated bags in honor or in memory of many whose lives have been touched by cancer.

The Relay raised over $164,000 at the event and that number will continue to grow with upcoming fundraisers as we persist in our efforts to find a cure. The event was made possible by the love of so many and hopes of 26 teams and numerous sponsors.

This year the smallest survivor was named KING of the Relay and he was honored and supported as he led the First Walk and efforts. Leo is only 9 months old and has been battling cancer since October 2022. If you would like to find out more on how to get involved to help find a cure, please visit www.relayforlife. org/pembrokepinesmiramar or email peter.rose@cancer.org. With much love and gratitude, we thank everyone who made this event possible, and we hope to find a cure soon.

P embroke Lakes Elementary Special Programs

intermediate students are so excited to be a part of a wonderful program called Arts4all. This is a specially designed program geared just for students with disabilities. No matter what the students’ disabilities are, all students can make some type of artwork that showcases their ABILITY! Ms. Dacosta serves as the art teacher for this program. Ms. Dacosta visits Pembroke Lakes Elementary once a week and works with students in various artistic methods of creation and expression. Students are engaged in music and art while learning about different cultures and ways of life. At the end of the eight-week session, the work created by the students will be displayed for the enjoyment of the public at the Frank C. Otis Gallery and Exhibit Hall in the City Center.

The Arts4All program provides Pembroke Lakes’ students the opportunity to experience what it feels like to have their work of art officially recognized and displayed for the community. “Together, we can help spread the organization’s vision in which the arts are universally accessible while making it possible for people of disabilities to contribute positivity to the social, cultural, and economic life of Florida”, shared Mrs. Brenna DeFrance, InD Special Program teacher. “We are grateful that our Pembroke Lakes Elementary students are immersed in such a wonderful experience this school year.”

Pasadena Lakes Elementary School (PDE) is a proud “A” school and a place where we instill great habits in our students to turn them into great leaders. We are a school that strives to create a welcoming and safe environment. Our teachers have established that learning and positive relationships are core values within our students. Students have every opportunity for participation, collaboration, service, and autonomy to strengthen their lifelong connection to school. This year we have been busy academically educating our students but also teaching them the importance of community and how essential it is to create and foster relationships.

Pasadena Lakes has worked diligently at helping our students develop and foster qualities that make them successful leaders but also productive citizens. We are proud to say that our National Elementary Honor Society and Student Council supported the community through our Jo DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Toy Drive, collecting over 300 toys, through supporting our new Media Center by hosting our Valentine candy gram sale earning $900 to purchase additional items, and by collecting diapers, new

undergarments/socks that were presented to The Carrie Creek Foundation. We are currently hosting a “Mission Hope” drive to collect hygiene bags for the homeless and our Autism coin war drive will be used to support building our ASD sensory room. Pasadena Lakes will continue to foster, guide, and encourage our students to be leaders within their community by creating opportunities that lead to growth, exploration and pave the way for natural curiosity to grow in their educational journey.

In addition to all the ways we support our community, Pasadena has provided our students with a variety of clubs such as WPLE News Broadcasting, Book Club, Photography Club to promote student engagement, collaboration with others, and to provided students the platform to express themselves. These are just a few of the clubs and activities that we have to offer our students to instill that “Great Habits lead to Great Leaders”.

Students worked after school and over the weekends in preparation for the show. The Black History Show titled “ Magic, that we are “, displayed famous African American musicians and pioneers throughout the years. The school puts on up to 4 major performances throughout the year, focusing on the holidays and celebrating diverse cultures. Renaissance at Pines continues to accept students and focuses on the whole child outside of just education. One of the best things you can help your child work toward as a student is becoming an independent learner. In school, independence is a sign of maturity and confidence. Students who are independent seek to learn for the sake of learning and understand that learning requires discipline and diligence.

The more you can help your child make that transition toward independence as a student, the more equipped they will be for college-level academics and their career.

What is an independent learner?

Put simply, independent learning is when students take ownership of their education and control of the tasks required to learn. They stay on top of what they need to do and engage in homework and studying without having to be nagged by you or their teachers.

It’s obvious why this is important! Independent students are not afraid to fail and recognize that all learning requires effort. They take responsibility for school themselves and acknowledge that success in school will help them reach their goals, even if they haven’t defined them yet. They are persistent, even when a subject or assignment is hard for them. And they tend to comprehend and retain things better than their lessindependent peers.

How can you raise an independent learner?

Teaching your child to be an independent learner isn’t like teaching them how to ride a bike or tie their shoes, but there are still many things you can do to encourage independence. Here are several tips:

• Focus on effort and learning more than grades and GPA. In school, encourage your child to keep in mind that grades matter and praise from teachers is always welcome, but learning is the goal. If your child receives a low grade on a test or assignment, talk about what they think went wrong. Did they follow directions? Study thoroughly? Keep up on class work? And when your child receives a high grade, point out how they got there.

• Set goals and talk about the future. Independent learners have the motivation to succeed in school because they know it will lead to a brighter future. From a young age,

talk with your child about what they like to learn and what school subjects they enjoy most. Talk about college and what your child might want to do for a career one day. Help your child make the connection between their future and their actions today.

• Talk about school as a process of learning. Your child must understand that learning is a journey that will have ups and downs. Remind your child to pay attention to how they learn best and the pitfalls that can make school harder for them. Some students realize early on that they are a strong reader and less strong at math. This will mean they’ll need put extra effort into math homework and ask for teachers’ help. Other students might struggle with organization. Developing good routines will be essential. The more your child knows themselves as a student, the easier they can self-assess and get help when they need to.

• Resist the urge to step in too often. School is and always will be your child’s responsibility, so treat it that way. It’s okay for you to provide guidance and support, but don’t get too involved in the homework process or take over when your child gets stuck. Encourage your child to be resourceful by looking through their notes or textbook when they are confused by a problem or searching the internet for videos to help them. And if you don’t know how to help when your child asks for guidance on that math or science homework, instead have them explain where they’re confused and come up with a few specific questions to ask their teacher the next day.

It’s so important that your child becomes an independent learner. As your child progresses through school and life, the responsibilities only become greater—and teachers expect that your child will be a self-starter who takes initiative to manage their own learning.

If your child struggles to complete homework independently or spends a lot of time on homework but yields little results, call Huntington. We’ll perform an academic evaluation of your child to get to the root of the problem. From there, we will develop a customized program that focuses on the areas where your child needs the most assistance. Call 1-800-CAN-LEARN.

The Panthers at Pines Lakes Elementary are proud to announce a new partnership with the Miramar-Pines Rotary Club. The club members reached out with the goal of conducting a Book Giveaway to every student prior to school breaks. Since becoming partners, they have provided close to 2,000 books to the students. The students get very excited when their class comes through the Book Giveaway to select the book of their choosing. Mrs. Creviston, Literacy Coach at Pines Lakes said, “We are so grateful for our friendship with the Miramar-Pines Rotary Club! The squeals of excitement and shining smiles when the students get to choose a book bring us so much joy! In the days following the giveaways, the students are ecstatic to share updates on their books and we have such rich conversations. Thank you to our new friends!”

Providing students with high quality reading material helps us support our families and increases student literacy. Research shows that starting at birth, children who read just one book a day hear about 290,000 more words by the time they enter kindergarten than students who don’t read. Reading with children helps them pick up the skill of reading quickly and easily. As SAC Chair and Academic Coach, Mrs. Dejean said “We are so happy to have this partnership with the Miramar-Pines Rotary Club to help instill

the love of reading in all children, especially those who don’t have the opportunity to get new books. This is also a great help to our English Language Arts School Improvement Goal our school is working towards this year.

We are grateful to the Rotary Club Members for this generous donation & know our families will enjoy reading their books together!

The partnership doesn’t end with free books – the Student Council members at Pines Lakes have returned the favor by helping the Rotary Club with their Shoe Drive. Students and staff donate used shoes which are then sold to a nonprofit organization that repairs them and sends them to people around the world in need of shoes. The money raised is then donated by the Rotary to sponsor their Pack a Sack project, which feeds needy kids in our community.

Through this partnership, the students at Pines Lakes continue to learn and show how they take care of others. Perhaps one day these same students will provide community service as adults by advancing goodwill and peace through fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders such as the Rotary Club. Visit our school or call for a tour. 10300 Johnson Street, Pembroke Pines 33026. (754) 323-7100.

Withtoday’s busy schedule and focusing on school, it’s always hard for students to have a chance to lend a helping hand. The Student Council of Pines Charter East Elementary Campus was allowed to assist in helping cleanup our school’s garden with the help of Mrs. Burrell, Mrs.Dizengoff and Mrs. Nelquy on February 14th, 2023. Since it was the Day of Service the students went above and beyond in raking leaves, cleaning the flower beds and planting new flowers alongside myself (Mrs.Quiroz) and Mrs. Nelquy. It was definitely a new experience for some students that

have never tended to a garden before. They took this challenge with tremendous determination and the understanding to help others. Our treasurer, Ariana Rodriguez felt that the garden was a fun experience for her, and she was super happy to help out. She also felt that with more people helping we can grow even more.

As Melanie Palacio, our student council’s Vice President stated, “Alone we can do so little but together we can do so much”. If you are interested in visiting our school, please call (954) 443-4800 or visit us at 10801 Pembroke Road, Pembroke Pines 33025.

Lakeside Elementary is a family-oriented school that promotes inclusion for all students in all areas of the school. Part of our approach to inclusion is to display a sense of collaboration, engagement, and respect for all students and staff. In March, our five-autism spectrum disorder (ASD) classes participated in the Special Olympics at Flanagan High School. Students participated in an array of events with peers of their own ages from a variety of schools attending. As our first year participating in this event, it was a culmination of working on skills such as catching, throwing, running bases, and encouraging teamwork in each other. Flanagan High School cheerleaders and baseball players were there to motivate, assist, and pump our students up as they moved through stations and felt a sense of accomplishment at their athletic successes. Our staff including our Principal, Mr. Rodriguez, our ASD Coach, Mrs. Freesland, all the teachers and teacher assistants, and some Lakeside ‘Alumni’ were eager spectators praising effort and giving support to our enthusiastic students. “This event was so well organized. It was wonderful to see the high school athletics students and staff working with our elementary students to learn and have fun. It was a great day

for all involved,” said Mrs. Freesland.

In addition to fostering athleticism, staff and students at Lakeside Elementary are focused on enhancing and furthering our academic progress. This year, students have been singularly focused on achieving Math Fluency through the implementation of our Reflex Math program and the motivation strategies spearheaded by Ms. Archer, our Assistant Principal. With the support of our exceptional Parent Teacher Association (PTA), led by Mrs. Chavez, the students were rewarded with a ‘Fluency Party’ to celebrate their successes. Students in grades 1 – 5 who displayed 100% fluency by the party date were invited by special green tickets to attend a dance party complete with popcorn, cotton candy, games, and their favorite dance tunes. The PTA, Lakeside staff, and students danced and celebrated the academic success and effort by our students. PTA Secretary, Mrs. Lopez, stated, “We love to give back to the students for their effort and accomplishments. It was great to see the smiling faces on students who have worked so hard on their math skills.”

We are all very proud of our students and staff for all they do. Stop by for a visit or call for a tour. 900 NW 136th Avenue, Pembroke Pines. (754) 323-6440.

The Student Government at Pembroke Pines Elementary conducted a Teddy Bear drive to collect Teddy Bears for Taylor’s Teddy Bears. Taylor’s Teddy Bears is a nonprofit organization that collects stuffed bears for first responders to give to children. The organization honors the memory of Taylor Bishop who was killed when a plane crashed into the car his mother was driving. For one week, students at Pembroke Pines Elementary brought in stuffed animals. On February 14th as a part of our Day of Service and Love activities, students from each grade level delivered the bears to our Student Government members who in turn delivered them to the Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Department on February 24th. Over

140 bears were collected and Meghan Bishop, Taylor’s mom and the founder of the organization was on hand to witness the event. We plan to make this an annual event at Pembroke Pines Elementary so that we can continue to honor the memory of Taylor.

Pembroke Pines Elementary is committed to providing a quality education to all students and ensuring that they have the skills necessary for the next step in their educational careers. We always welcome volunteers to our school. If you are interested in volunteering, please call the school at (754) 323-7000 or visits us at 6700 SW 9th Street, Pembroke Pines 33023.
