The fall youth sports season is upon us, and maybe it’s time to remind us parents about best practices. We spend all that time driving kids to and from practice, cobbling together whatever we can for a meal and being almost as excited as our children when the day of competition arrives. Let’s look at a few ways to make the experience as positive as possible, so your children will stay involved. First off, many parents new to youth sports might need this phrase solidified in their minds: the sports you see on TV (NBA, NFL, etc.) is entertainment. Youth sports are about education. Kids learn to encourage each other. They learn to handle situations when things don’t go their way, such as not getting to be the quarterback or the point guard. These are good conversation points to have with your child, and better to have these talks after a 24-hour cooling off period, not during that dreaded Car Ride Home. Cheer when your team makes a good play. But don’t cheer when a player on the other team makes a bad play, like striking out or missing a free throw. Again, that’s someone’s child out there. Be the first to enact reciprocal good behavior. Leave the officials alone. The lower levels of youth sports often have teen officials. It’s their first time, too. And, believe me, there is a dearth of officials all the way through the high school sports system. We need those who have an interest to stick with it. The other thought, naturally, is one of teaching responsibility. If something doesn’t go your way, pointing at an exterior party isn’t the best educational message. When I was coaching youth sports, I would pass out lollipops to the parents before the game. (Think about that one…) Don’t overpower the coach from your side of the stands. What if you yell “pass” while the coach is yelling “shoot?” Yes, your strategy possibly could be better. Again, that’s not the point here. If you do have a strategy, technique, or fundamental suggestions, don’t show up the coach in front of the children. Hey, we all have egos. And remember that 24-hour cooling off guideline. Your No. 1 job is to be encouraging. Focus on that. Get to know the other parents. When kids re-live their youth sports days, they talk about the pool party after the game, or the ice cream feast everyone enjoyed. So much of the good that comes out of being part of a team isn’t what happens on the field. Friendly talk with other parents can reveal similar interests, and you’ll set an example of civility that can become contagious. Yes, Daddyball is tricky. There are a few youth coaches out there who appear to project that their child is the star and the entire team. First, if you are one of those parents that is kind enough to volunteer your time, thank you. But realize that everyone knows who your child is. Even if he/she really is the best player, it’s a good idea to spread the love around. Let someone else pitch also. Take your child out of the game now so other kids become the focus. Nick Sortal is a member of the Plantation City Council. He wrote about recreation issues for the Sun-Sentinel newspaper during part of his career and Northeastern University in Boston named him a Sports Ethics Fellow in 2009. He also wrote the book “Basketball Tip-Ins: 100 Drills for Young Players and Coaches,” published in 2001 by McGraw-Hill.

While the thermometer may begin to drop, there are still plenty of hot days ahead of us. If you are outside, please remember to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, take frequent breaks from the heat by resting in shady areas, and always wear a hat. These simple tips will keep you safe and help you continue to enjoy our enviable Florida weather.

Remember, storm season is not over just yet. The storm season runs from June through November. The month of September is actually the peak of hurricane season. So, please remember to stay on guard, keep your plans and kits ready, and watch for weather updates. If you have not put your plans together yet, I suggest visiting our website at www.plantation.org for ideas and plan starters.

Finally, I am saddened to inform our neighbors that once again the Plantation Volunteer Firefighter’s Association will not be hosting the annual barbecue this year. For the last two years we had to suspend the event due to Covid-19. We were very excited about bringing back the oldest and longest running tradition in the city. However, due to rising costs and supply chain issues, we are not able to conduct the barbecue in the same manner that meets ourWhilestandards.thebarbecue

represents one of the Volunteer Fire Association’s annual fund raisers, we are exploring other fund-raising opportunities to help support our many civic programs including Care-A-Little. I am very well aware of how much we all enjoy the annual firefighter’s barbecue and how it represents a chance for the entire community to come together. I hope we can return to this great event in the future. In the meantime, I ask you to continually support the Plantation Volunteer Fire Association in whatever efforts it chooses to bring forward.

Since the season of autumn is soon upon us, I’d like to touch on a few items. Unless you’ve lived in South Florida for a while you may not notice the subtle weather changes as we transition from summer to autumn. The average daily temperature will begin to drop. Our children will begin spending more time outside, after school and on weekends. The sun will set a little earlier and daylight changes at dusk can make driving a challenge. Please use caution and be observant of children playing in or near streets. We love to see our kids playing outside and enjoying some fresh air. Let’s make sure those experiences are both safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Premier Martial Arts is proud to support local kids by giving them invaluable safety training that could improve lives through our Bully Proof Workshop open to the public! We understand the effects that bullying can have on a child’s life. All the motivation that a child has to succeed in school, sports, or any endeavor in life, comes from a child’s confidence and self-esteem. A bully robs a child of those very important traits and leaves a negative impact on the rest of their life. Thus, our program is designed to give children the confidence, selfesteem, and knowledge needed to defend themselves against these bullies. We will cover techniques that will improve body posture and voice tone so that your child is less likely to ever be bullied and to help stand up for others too. 1375 Shotgun Rd, 33326 (954) 217-6006 www.premiermartialarts.com/weston

Yes they may argue with you, but limiting screen time for your child is helping them, not harming them. The average child spends between 5-9 hours a day on screen. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends minimal to no screen time for children under the age of 18 months and less than an hour a day for children 2-5. For children 5-17, generally no more than two hours is recommended per day, except for homework. Here are some helpful tools and tips for setting limits and dealing with pushback.

4) Use the Screen Together: When you do allow your child to use screentime, use it with them! Cultivate a curiosity about your child’s online habits. Consider learning the videogames your teen plays. Why do they like Discord or TikTok? This helps you not only build connection and trust but gain awareness regarding the safety of their behavior. When working with youth in our office we often try to gauge their ability to regulate their frustration. When applying rules for your children, those who have a difficult time regulation their emotion during disappointment are often the individuals who present with the most pushback. If their behaviors have already or start to escalate please reach out to a professional for guidance. For further information and support please contact us at 954-288-9393 or email DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

2) Explain your Reasoning: Age seven is considered the average age of reasoning, when children begin to understand the reasons behind rules. Explaining the reasons behind rules and requests yields the best behavior results. Screen time use above two hours in teenagers is associated with lower scores on language and thinking tests, poor sleep, less curiosity, a lack of self-control, and emotional instability. Even more specifically, increased screen time is directly related to higher levels of depression and eating disorders.

3) Fill the Void: If you are going to take away screen time, it’s only fair to supply some replacement behaviors or activity options involving peer connection for your child, especially if they are using the screen to talk to friends. Activities which encourager peer interaction include team sports, gymnastics, drama, tennis, and piano. You might even be more lenient in allowing your child to hang out with neighbors or come with you to the gym. We need to replace the dopamine “kick” screens provide with some healthy socialization.

Limiting Screen Time for Your Child Actually Helps Them! (Despite the Pushback)

1) Make it Foolproof: Use an application on their phones and Ipads that automatically shuts down application use after two hours. This can prevent arguing and the need to physically remove their phone, which can feel like punishment or turn into arguments. Applications to consider using include unGlue, Norton Family, and Canopy.

MARCH Thursday, March 16: Early Release Day, End of 3rd Quarter Friday, March 17: Employee Planning (no school for students) Monday - Friday, March 20 - 24: School Spring Break

2022- - 2023

Under Mr. Petty’s direction, Plantation High School’s band marched in as the loud drums filled the room. Plantation Middle School cheerleaders marched down the stage stairs adding to the excitement. Peters Elementary Mascot, Pixel, made an appearance expressing our collective gratitude. The Peters PTA had decorated the auditorium with beautiful balloon bouquets and the book tables were draped in pretty red table cloths, waiting to receive the all the student’s books. The children were so excited and loudly participated in the news anchor’s countdown. Once the countdown began, the band played, the cheerleaders cheered, Pixel set off running between the tables, and the children shouted and clapped in excitement. It was a great way to kick off summer reading!

Over the last six years the Big Book drive has collected and distributed over 146,000 books! Having books to give our students two weeks before summer break would keep our Pandas reading all summer long. We encourage our students to read year- round, because we know that readers make great leaders! Being able to provide a book to every child was a great way to celebrate the summer. We quickly planned for Channel 10’s arrival and for the 700 books we were about to receive. On May 26th, the event went off without a hitch. Principal Deutsch and Assistant Principal Johnson called the classes into the Panda Café to welcome in the news team. The children were told they would be on live TV shortly after their arrival, and the buzz began to fill the air.

It may be hard to hear your child declare their dislike of reading, but there is a reason for it—probably several, in fact. Children who are lacking some of the reading building blocks that are essential for reading fluency and comprehension might find the entire process frustrating and avoid it altogether. What can you do? Make sure your child has the basics down, then help them rediscover reading as an enjoyable pastime. Here are several tips: Read together and pay attention. You might not be an expert in reading instruction, but if you observe your child’s reading, you will pick up what they do well and where they have difficulty. Listen for how they sound out words and word sounds (phonics) and whether they recognize sight words that don’t sound like they are spelled (for example, the). Take note of whether your child recognizes patterns and letter behaviors and decodes words to break down longer words into smaller words. Let your child choose their own reading material. Whatever type of reading material piques your child’s interest, go with it. The more your child picks their own books, the more interested in it they will be. Don’t rule out magazines, comic books, articles, riddles and other forms of reading. Go to the library often and let your child wander. Get the help of the librarian too—they are very familiar with how to engage reluctant readers with the right type of books and other material. Sometimes, it takes finding the right books to engage your child in reading. Try to make reading fun. It’s hard to do when your child has lost interest in reading, but do your best to encourage your child to read and make reading fun. For younger children, try matching words and pictures to work on vocabulary. Play word Bingo and other word games. Read fun and interesting books as a family with hot chocolate or lemonade after dinner a few nights a week. And as much as possible, let your child see you reading and talking about what you read with enthusiasm. Don’t push too hard. To the struggling student, reading feels daunting and stressful. Try to ease your child’s mind a bit by setting small goals—15 minutes a day for starters. Every day that your child reads, encourage them to try reading on their own first. If they get stuck on a word or section, they can always come to you with questions. Establish the habit, but don’t force reading. If there’s a problem, it needs to be addressed before your child will ever embrace reading by choice. When all else fails, read to your child. This might not work with older children, but if your younger child resists reading, read to them instead. Developing that listening comprehension and understanding of language is important. Plus, reading aloud will introduce your child to the joy of getting lost in a good story. Do this as much as you can while your child is still developing their own reading skills.

If your struggling reader doesn’t like reading and you’re not sure how to help, call Huntington at 1-800 CAN LEARN. We’ll do an academic evaluation of your child prior to beginning instruction so that we have a good sense of where your student is and where they should be based on their grade. Once we pinpoint any skill gaps and trouble spots, we’ll develop a personalized learning plan that will help your student succeed.
