Dear Readers,

I’m so excited to start the New Year with a positive heart and a great attitude to keep moving forward with our daily lives and making the best of this year. The entire Sports & Activities Directories team would like to wish you all the best of health, happiness and success for you and your family in 2022 and beyond! The magic of Winter is a short period of time here at home, but aren’t we enjoying the fresh cool days? Beautiful weather moving into Spring is a perfect backdrop to enjoy some of the events that are happening in our city. We are featuring a variety of outdoor concerts, moonlight movies in the park, and the puppet shows at the community center among many other events in and around Weston. From the Art Council of Greater Weston, Pops concert is back, Foreign Films, and make sure you don’t miss out on the annual Weston World Fest that comes back to the Regional Park. The theme for this year is “Seasons” which celebrates international culture cuisine and entertainment, and performances from around the world will be highlighted. Check out our event pages for details on these events and so many more. Deciding on which spring and summer camp your child will attend may seem far off, however now is the time to start planning! We are featuring so many awesome camps that Weston and the surrounding areas have to offer in this issue, and the next. Camps are an excellent way for your kids to expand their social circles while finding new areas of interest and fun! From arts and sport camps to educational and activities camps, there is a fun and affordable option for every child to enjoy. Don’t risk losing your spot, enroll now! We have several informative articles from our partners. The Children’s Services Council discusses the best way to protect our children around the water. Drowning is the leading cause of death in children ages 1 to 4 years old. Children need capable, close, and constant supervision, especially toddlers who easily and quickly leave a safe, supervised area often unnoticed. In school news, read about Eagle Point Elementary launching the violin music program, Manatee Bay winning the Commissioner’s Cup at the annual Weston Rotary event, Cypress Bay High school DECA program preparing for one of the biggest state Conferences this year, the new K.A.P.A. club keeping the kids moving in a physical exercise program, and The Sagemont School bringing the community together with basketball. Those are just a few exciting things, and you can read all the details here. It’s simple amazing what our kids are doing. I wish you a wonderful Spring and look forward to seeing you at the field, parks and around Weston, if you see me with a camera don’t be shy, say “HI”! My best to you,

Isabel Magette Weston Publisher

Dear Weston Residents,

Welcome 2022. There is not a more popular or better place to call home than Weston! This is not just my sentiment but that of many. In fact, Weston was just listed as one of Americas 10 Hottest Neighborhoods of 2022. And back in 2021, gosh that seems so long ago now after all we have been through, Weston was ranked as the #1 Best City to Live in Broward County and #10 in South Florida. Our City was selected as one of the 50 top cities out of 30,000 across the country as Americas Best Cities to Live by 24/7 Wall St. and named the #6 Best Small Cities to Start a Small Business in 2021 by Verizon Business. This is more than reassuring as a resident and business owner to hear. When your hometown is so well ranked, and for all the reasons you chose to live or invest here, it provides confidence as well as pride. My colleagues on the dais, City Commissioners Byron Jaffe, Mary Molina-Macfie, Chris Eddy and Henry Mead, along with City Manager Decker and our city staff, continue to work hard to make Weston the best city in the country. 25 YEARS HAVE PASSED I hope that you were able to come out to one or all of the events over the past year that celebrated our City’s 25th Anniversary. Our concluding celebration on December 11, 2021 – 25 Years of Community - featured an interactive fun zone for families and a live concert. It was a great night, attended by many former and current elected officials in Weston and from around the county and it was wonderful to see our residents having a great time, celebrating our community. If you are interested in Weston’s history and those who served from the beginning and played instrumental roles in Weston becoming a City, please visit our website NEWS section at westonfl.org. COMMUNITY EVENTS With the great winter weather in south Florida comes a host of City events and programs that we encourage you and your family to enjoy. Our WestonNights Free Outdoor concert series in the park continues with the Fondo Blanco Latin Band on Saturday, March 12. The concert will be held at the Event Stage in Weston Regional Park from 7-10PM. All you need to bring is a lawn chair! Every WestonNights event has food trucks on site for a complete date night, or night out with friends and family. And there’s more! The ever-popular free monthly Moonlight Movies in the Park series continues through April. Weston World Fest is back, and better than ever, on Sunday, March 6 from noon-4PM in Weston Regional Park. This year’s event highlights seasonal celebrations from around the world. Visit over 20 booths representing different countries, with a passport challenge for students. Authentic international cuisine for sale by area restaurants and live performances by artists, dancers, singers and musicians. The Foreign Film Series also continues! Check our Event Calendar online each month. February is Heart Month: CPR classes are available virtually from our BSO Life Safety Educator 2/3 & 2/24 at 5:30PM. You can register online at https:// bsofirerescuepubliceducation.as.me The life you save may be a loved one. Next, in April, the City, Weston Town Center and the Weston Music Society, in partnership with The Arts Council of Greater Weston present a fabulous free evening of entertainment: Outdoor Pops Concert with the South Florida Symphony Orchestra. The symphony will perform an exciting array of musical arrangements from Latin, traditional Pops and more under the direction of Maestra Sebrina Maria Alfonso. Also in April is the annual Weston Royal Egg Hunt and our final Moonlight Movie in the Park. Details of all events can be found on our city website Events Calendar at WestonFL.org/Events and in our weekly E-Newsletter Newsday Tuesday – subscribe today! Until next time,

Margaret “Peggy” Brown Mayor, City of Weston

T

he awarding-winning 7th annual Weston World Fest returns to Weston Regional Park with a full display of our wonderful international community. The City of Weston and the Arts Council of Greater Weston are delighted to announce that this popular free event will be held Sunday, March 6, 2022, from noon to 4:00pm. Arts Council President Laura Dobrzanski is thrilled with the return to our full presentations, noting, “Last year, everyone pitched in to make the World Fest Drive-Thru a success. We are delighted to be able to return to the park with our usual full display.” Twenty interactive country booths will interpret this year’s festival theme “Seasons”, giving viewers a peek at what it’s like to spend a year in each country. New to the lineup are Sri Lanka, Lebanon, Paraguay and Kazakhstan. All ages will enjoy the costumes, music, and interactive activities representing these diverse cultures. There will also be a “Garden” section dedicated to sponsors and local nonprofit organizations, offering information and additional photo opportunities. As always, the event features a student Passport Program so our young crowd can take a tour of the world. Students can receive free tickets for different activity stations such as henna art, balloon art

and airbrush tattoos based on the number of countries they visit. Our entertainment lineup, representing many cultures, will perform live on stage. Expect to see colorfully dressed dancers and hear music representing such far-flung locations as India, Brazil, the British Isles, Spain, the Middle East and the Caribbean. To please your palate, food vendors will offer a taste of a variety of international cuisines including Greek, Italian, Spanish and other global fare. These will be available for purchase. Carol Lema, Founder and Director of Weston World Fest, notes, “After a very challenging year, I am pleased that the Fest continues on. I’m so very grateful for our dedicated and talented volunteers.” Annalisa Walker, Special Events Manager for the City of Weston, sums it up, “This unique event brings people together from all walks of life in an outdoor venue to celebrate Weston’s rich diversity. Guests at World Fest have the opportunity to explore the world, in the comfort of their backyard, through its exhibition of country booths, international food and live on-stage entertainment. We encourage everyone to come out and enjoy this year’s event, it won’t disappoint.”

T

he City of Weston and the Weston Music Society are pleased to announce the return of the free Weston Pops Concert. It will be held Saturday evening, April 22 at 6:30pm, in Weston Town Center behind the Bell Tower. A limited number of chairs will be set up, so feel free to bring your own chairs. This will be a treat for the whole family to enjoy wonderful music in a relaxed setting. This year, the South Florida Symphony will present the concert under the direction of Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso. Alfonso has been a guest conductor with such esteemed orchestras as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the San Jose Symphony, the San Antonio Symphony, the Pacific Symphony, the Prague Radio Symphony, the Orchestra de Rus in Sienna, Italy, and the Women’s Philharmonic, among many others. She even conducted an underwater concert for over 400 divers which received world-wide recognition. Gina Catone, President of the Weston Music Society,

says, “I am beyond excited to welcome the South Florida Symphony to Weston. I had the pleasure of attending one of their events and was impressed with the talented and passionate musicians I witnessed on stage. s the months of the New Year pass by, it becomes harder and harder to stick to our resolutions and our goals. From the temptations of everyday life to the lack of motivation over time, our commitment to our goals starts to falter. With the changing of the season, new opportunities emerge for us to begin again and reinvent ourselves. ABOUT KIDOKINETICS: Kidokinetics was founded by Weston resident, Terri Braun, in South Africa and brought to the USA in 1997. The first Kidokinetics class started in Weston in 2000 with 80 children showing up for the first class at Weston Regional Park. Terri applied her experience as a teacher and athlete with her passion to keep children positive and active to develop her programs. Kidokinetics engages children with fun, high-energy sports and fitness classes, introducing physical education to children of all ages. The company is now a national franchise brand as a premier sports, fitness, health, and recreation program provider. Even through the COVID-19 pandemic era, parents continue to be eager for their kids to get active and limit screen time, and the Kidokinetics franchise system is looking to provide the solution. Led by Founder Terri Braun and Franchise CEO Dave Pazgan, the brand has attracted the interest of dynamic franchise leaders to help support its mission to empower and educate kids through physical activity. “I believe in the program Terri developed. Bringing my business and franchise development experience to Kidokinetics has created a great partnership and synergy for the company’s growth,” says Pazgan. The sports and physical education brand operates 21 franchises nationwide and hopes to add another 100 in the next two years. Kidokinetics is wellpositioned to continue growing. The brand recently opened a new world headquarters in Davie, FL. “I have been blessed to be able to run a business from home for over twenty years. esearchers are beginning to learn how to favorably influence genes via the study of epigenetics, a genealtering process called methylation which is involved in 70% of serious psychiatric conditions. Several studies revealed that most mental disorders involve disturbances or imbalances of essential nutrients that alter brain function. All heritable mental illnesses were presumed to have an unavoidable genetic component and people believe their biological and psychological fate has already been predetermined and is locked in by gene mutations. Many mental disorders now appear to be epigenetic, rather than genetic. This means that gene protein making can be switched on (called gene expression) or off (called gene silencing) by environmental factors such as radiation, temperature, food or lack of food. Certain molecules within foods (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential oils) can do this reliably. Most severe heritable mental disturbances will be reversible once we under-stand how to tap into epigenetics. Moreover, present nutrient therapies have already resulted in thousands of reports of recovery in persons diagnosed with violent behavior, ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. More than 70% of people with behavioral and mental disorders have a methylation imbalances, this chemical dominates gene expression. About 42% of schizophrenics are over-methylated while 28% are undermethylated. More than 95% of persons diagnosed with autism, OCD, and antisocial personality disorder (e.g., convicted felons) exhibit undermethylation. The body’s methyl groups arise from methionine, one of the amino acids present in meat and other proteins. There are nutrient therapies that can normalize methylation and correct many brain chemistry imbalances without resorting to drugs. Copper overload is a primary offender in many mental disturbances, including autism, paranoid schizophrenia, clinical depression, hyperactivity, learning disability, and postpartum depression. Excessive copper reduces the

brain chemical dopamine and increases norepinephrine. During pregnancy, blood copper levels more than double to stimulate the development of new blood vessels as the baby grows rapidly. If copper levels do not return to normal after birth, then postpartum depression may result and antidepressant drugs usually do not help these women. Vitamin B6 is another nutrient that is associated with many mental health issues, producing symptoms of irritability, depression, poor short-term memory, insomnia, muscle weakness, difficulty walking and even psychosis. B6 is needed to produce important brain chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine and GABA (a relaxing brain chemical). Zinc deficiency is the most frequently observed chemical imbalance in mental health populations. Zinc deficiency is associated with temper control problems, weak immunity, depression, poor wound healing, epilepsy, anxiety, learning problems and hormone imbalances. Another common imbalance is a chemical produced in the body called pyrrole that binds to zinc and vitamin B6 and increases their excretion in the urine. Nearly onethird of persons diagnosed with depression, behavioral disorders, autism, and psychosis have elevated pyrroles. A urine test can reveal whether a pyrrole disorder is present. This important chemical imbalance can be corrected within weeks using supplements of zinc, B-6, and augmenting nutrients. Experience with ADHD and depression patients report significant improvement within month of individualized nutrient therapy and some of them are able to wean away from psychiatric drugs without a return of symptom. Women with post-par-tum depression have reported significant improvement after blood copper levels were normalized. For more information, please call or email Weston Medical Health & Wellness. magine starting an orchestra online and amid a pandemic! That is exactly what Eagle Point Elementary did. For over ten years, 17 violins sat collecting dust in a music closet because there was no one qualified to provide instruction. That all changed during the summer leading into the 2020-2021 school year when Ms. de Zayas, Principal of Eagle Point Elementary, interviewed and hired Dr. Felix Spengler to launch their music orchestra class. Dr. Spengler learned to play the violin and piano as a young boy in Cuba. He has shared his gift and talent on stages across the world and has even played in Carnegie Hall. Eagle Point already had a Foundational Music program that all students participated in. By introducing a Music Orchestra program, the vision was for primary students to continue to attend Foundational Music class and the intermediate students (Grades 3-5) would rotate through the Orchestra class, learn to read music, learn to play an

instrument, and could audition for the school’s orchestra. The response from students wanting to join the violin class during the pandemic was so overwhelming they ran out of violins. Luckily, the Florida Youth Orchestra stepped in and donated over 30 violins at the start of this school year. Today, over 50 students participate in either the beginning or advanced violin program and many have expressed interest in joining next school year. This past December, Eagle Point Elementary orchestra students showcased their talent at their second violin orchestra. Use the QR code to watch a video produced by Luis Medellin on the school orchestra. The Eagle Point Elementary is located at 100 Indian Trace, Weston FL 33326. n December 5, 2021, Manatee Bay Elementary (MBE) won its first ever Run for Tomorrow – Commission Cup! This annual event is spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Weston in collaboration with the City of Weston and numerous other entities. Eight local schools took part in the 24th edition of this wonderful family event that aims to promote fitness and wellness in the community. The school with the largest percentage of participation in the 1-Mile Walk earns a trophy and prize. After the dust settled, MBE had the highest participation rate and was able to bring home the cup! “Our incredible staff and PTA all contributed to ensuring that our students came out in full force to represent our school,” said Coach Rodriguez, who facilitated our Manateam. Along with winning the Commission Cup, Manatee Bay Elementary was also awarded $1,000 and these funds will go towards helping upgrade their playground. “This really meant a great deal to our school. We’ve participated in this event for the past 12 years,” Rodriguez added. As part of the Rotary Club’ of Weston’s 24th Annual Joe DiMaggio Run for Tomorrow which also includes a Half Marathon, Half Marathon Relay, 10K, 5K, and Family Health Festival, the Commission Cup ensures the whole community becomes involved in the

event to raise money for the Weston Rotary Club’s local and international charitable, health, and educational projects. This year’s event proceeds benefitted the following organizations: Handy, Harvest Drive, Broward 2-1-1, Feeding South Florida, Alzheimer’s Association, Habitat for Humanity of Broward, LifeNet4Families, MADD, Veterans’ Honor Flight of South Florida, Broward Education Foundation, and Rotary International’s fight to end Polio. Visit www.westonrotaryrun.com to learn more. “What I love most about this event, is the family focus. Walking around and seeing families walking, talking and sharing fitness together warms my heart. We spend so much time with technology and as a principal, it’s wonderful to see everyone disconnected to devices and connected to each other” said Heather DeVaughn, School Principal. From Manatee Bay, we truly thank the Rotary Club of Weston, our Mayor, Commissioners, and City of Weston Officials for a fun and well-organized family event. By Terri Braun

After identifying the need to provide a sports and physical fitness opportunity

for special needs student in their community, Josh and Jake Braun founded K.A.P.E. (Kidokinetics Adapted Physical Education) at Cypress Bay High School. Josh is now a sophomore at University of Florida; so Jake and their younger sister, Jordana, are continuing to lead the program after a one-year hiatus due to the COVID pandemic. Jake is a senior and Jordana is a freshman at Cypress Bay High School. They have established K.A.P.E as an official club at the school and have over 40 volunteer student coaches and 15 students involved in the club. The objective of the club is to introduce children to a variety of sports. The K.A.P.E. class is held weekly during the last period of school for 30 minutes. The volunteers are the peers of the students participating in the program. They partner with a student and help them with the gross motor skills to play a particular sport. The sports introduced are soccer, hockey, tennis, golf, lacrosse, volleyball and much more. This gives the children the opportunity to try different sports in a non-competitive environment. “I am glad to do my part to continue the program my brothers started and have so much fun working with all the K.A.P.E. volunteers and students,” says Jordana.

The volunteers feel the sense of accomplishment seeing their students develop more confidence while having fun playing sports. “The most rewarding part of K.A.P.E. is seeing some of the students hit a tennis ball, kick a soccer ball, or make a basketball shot for the first time in their lives, since they have never had a program like this before,” says Jake. “This is rewarding to me, the volunteers, and our students”. Anyone can join the club and become a mentor to these children. This gives them the opportunity to develop new interests, skills and strengths. The positive impact this makes on the children and the camaraderie they have being able to interact with other kids on a weekly basis is extremely rewarding for all involved. Jake and Jordana hope that the K.A.P.E program continues to grow at Cypress Bay with special events such as a field day, but also aspire to help students at other schools to establish and lead a similar program for their respective communities. The Brauns look forwarding to seeing the positive benefits of K.A.P.E. to everyone involved in the program and appreciate the support of the Cypress Bay administration in allowing them to establish the club and program. Cypress Bay Hight School is located at 18600 Vista Park Blvd. in Weston. Their Principal is Cassandra Fried. They can be reached at (754)323-0350

the tri-county area to compete locally to gain exposure for their talent and very importantly provide a community event for families to enjoy during the Thanksgiving break. What is truly remarkable about this event led by Sagemont student athletes’ passion, is that they utilized the community basketball invitational event to raise $1,500 for a local charity, Honor Flights of South Florida, which is dedicated to honoring all American Veterans. The Sagemont School is continuously focused on bringing the community together and is ready to invite the community back on campus on April 30th for a FREE Athletic Skills Forum. s the academic competition season in Cypress Bay High School (CBHS) begins, DECA students prepare for the long-awaited Career Development Conference (CDC). The conference, which occurs annually in Orlando, Florida, consists of thousands of students from hundreds of schools around the state that come together to network, compete, establish friendships, and create meaningful memories. DECA is a co-curricular program that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management in high schools and colleges around the world. CBHS DECA is the largest chapter in the globe, with over 400 state winners and surpassing 1000 members. This year, they continue to surpass all odds, proudly representing 179 state qualifiers for the 2022 competition season. State competition is one of the most anticipated events at the school; throughout the year, students study for their exams, write business plans, and rehearse presentations. Especially after implications imposed by COVID-19 resulted in online competition for the 2020-2021 school year, students are even more excited to do well at states in hopes to make it to internationals, or the International Career Development Conference (ICDC). Although part of competition preparation is individual, CBHS DECA also has effective resources to help students prepare for their events. The program has gone beyond its way to provide personalized weekly practices for students, such as having DECA Headquarters, the main DECA classroom where achievements throughout the

years are exhibited, opened daily after school for any questions. Carolina Cardozo, a junior part of the Executive Council, with the help of fellow council member junior Valentina Lorenzo, was able to establish Testing Tuesdays and Manual Thursdays to ensure that students can reach their full potential as competitors. “On Testing Tuesdays, competitors could take practice tests or look at performance indicators for their role plays. On Manual Thursdays, competitors could work on their papers, compare papers with other teams and past winners, and practice presenting,” Cardozo said. “[Lorenzo] and I decided to come up with it because we wanted to create a space where competitors could get feedback from past competitors, collaborate with other teams, and gain as much practice as they could.” However, the co-curricular could not establish such helpful resources without the help of CBHS DECA presidents, seniors Isabella Eaton and Andrea Solorzano. “I know my experience can be used to help guide others, especially new competitors and members,” Eaton said. Solorzano also commented, saying, “The amount of communication and trust [Eaton and I] have with each other to take on tasks when the other is busy working on competition or school makes the whole process way easier.” Resources, dedication, and hard work continue to guide CBHS DECA further into greatness. You can follow CBHS DECA through this exciting time on Instagram @decacbhs. Cypress Bay Hight School is located at 18600 Vista Park Blvd in Weston. Their Principal is Casandra Fried.
